The Parcel

Last Saturday, I was asked to take in a parcel for a neighbour across the road. I was happy to do so and watched as the delivery driver made out a card for them, telling them where their parcel was. I watched out for them all day Saturday, but there was no sign of them being in. On Sunday, I went across with the parcel and knocked on their door. Twice. Lights were on and I could see a tv flickering, but no one answered the door. On Monday I was out all day but I went across again on Monday night and tried again. No answer. On Tuesday, I wrote a note, telling them that I had their parcel and to knock on my door to collect it. I also popped a Christmas card through their door with the note. No response. Went again this evening; lights on, tv flickering but still no answer.

What on earth do I do? I'm out at work most days of the week, as they are, but surely they must have seen the note and want to retrieve their ruddy huge parcel that's cluttering up my hall? confused

How frustrating. Makes you wonder why someone orders and pays for something and then has no interest in picking it up. I am always happy to take parcels in for neighbours but last week my neighbour called to say that she was expecting a parcel to be delivered later that day. I explained that I was going out and she berated me saying what am I supposed to do? Can't please all of the people all of the time.

You can only try so much. Either they want it or they don't. I'd probably print a note in large capitals, say if it's not collected by a certain date you will leave it outside their door and phone the firm to collect it.

I had some awful neighbours and constantly took their parcels in to begin with. The final straw came when a large delivery of clothes came and if laid them on my spare bed! Nobody called and I took them round - they were arguing inside about who would answer the door! Eventually it was opened the clothes snatched from me and not a word of thanks! After that I refused to take their parcels and I’m pleased to say they moved - some really rude people!

Have you been across daytime since the weekend? The lights, tv maybe on timers for security. Perhaps they are away on holiday.

Noreen3 Thu 12-Dec-19 16:22:31

I would definitely try another note,if they have someone popping in because they're away they should see it and do something about it.I would be tempted to put it outside their house if you can, with a note to say it's there.Don't take anything for them again

TrendyNannie6 Thu 12-Dec-19 16:18:16

Sounds to me as if they are away and left things on timers, to be honest sometimes taking in parcels for neighbours is more trouble than worth, after having countless problems with getting our parcels from one of our neighbours who we have told on more than one occasion not to take our parcels in, every single time they ignored us we have to go to them without a word of a lie at least four times, you can see them in their living room through thin curtains, they are middle aged no hearing probs just like the fact you have to literally beg for your parcels, we haven’t had a falling out with them either so it’s not that, we take in for neighbours that are respectful, but we would rather make our own arrangements to pick up ourselves less hassle

grandtanteJE65 Thu 12-Dec-19 16:00:26

Did you write or type the note? A lot of young and youngish people can't read handwriting, or so they claim, and just ignore anything handwritten.

Try googling them, you may be able to find a telephone number or a Facebook account. They aren't likely to ignore a message of that sort.

My neighbours do it all the time because I'm at home all day. I had one parcel for over a week and stopped going round because they couldn't be bothered to collect it.

Greciangirl Thu 12-Dec-19 15:17:25

So very annoying when you do a favour for neighbours and they just can’t be bothered to collect.

It’s happened to me several times now. I know that the young son is in, although the parents are usually out, he just can’t be bothered to answer the door. Lazy git.

timetogo2016 Thu 12-Dec-19 15:13:42

We have a device we plug in when we are away that looks to all intense and purposes that were in and the tv is on.
It`s to deter burglary.
Just a thought.

How rude! Leave it until they call for it. Store in a bin outside if you have no room. I have a neighbour who gets a Christmas card addressed to us every year. Each year I've delivered it myself. Last year I mentioned it might be best to advise the sender of the correct address - the result? Cold looks and blanks me. So, I get the yearly card again this week. Not saying any more.

lizzypopbottle Thu 12-Dec-19 14:17:02

Do they have a car parked outside? If so, stick a big note on their windscreen, facing inwards in front of the driving seat.

Newatthis Thu 12-Dec-19 14:01:36

Are they dead?

kircubbin2000 Thu 12-Dec-19 13:56:32

What a fuss about nothing! They will collect it sometime probably so don't worry. On the other hand a friend asked me to take in plants she had ordered as she was going away. When they arrived they were plugs, very small and frail. I had to pot up 70 little pansies and they have been sitting here since September. Yesterday I finally packed them up and left them at her daughters house .

SparklyGrandma Thu 12-Dec-19 13:55:52

I might be tempted to email the company they ordered it from, if it’s visible on the outside of the package and describe your problem. Ask them, the company to come and get it. Take a few photos to accompany your email, especially with the order reference if visible on the outside.

Good luck!

I wish I had a neighbour like you - had a delivery in the summer that the Hermes driver left somewhere 'safe'. Never found that place so, in the end, had a refund. Recently parcel due from overseas. Message to me saying 'parcel delivered no signature'. Don't have any near neighbours and have looked everywhere it could possibly have been left with no success.

kircubbin2000 Thu 12-Dec-19 13:52:13

What a fuss about nothing! Y

georgia101 Thu 12-Dec-19 13:48:49

I'd do what thecatshat suggested and put it in a bin bag in the shed and forget about it until they come to collect it. You've put yourself out more than enough already, and they know from your notes that it's waiting for them to collect it. And I'd never take in parcels for them again.

Chewbacca Thu 12-Dec-19 13:27:10

Ok, I've been across again this morning and left another note, on A4 paper, telling them again that I have their parcel and please would they call to collect it asap. Another neighbour has confirmed that they're not away on holiday because they've seen them about so I'm a bit confused as to why they've not responded so far.

Now that someone else knows I've genuinely tried to deliver it, I'm happier to just shove it in the spare room and forget about it if they don't call for it this evening.

nannyof4 Thu 12-Dec-19 13:14:01

How about putting it on there doorstep an hour or so before they are due home, and just keep an eye on it,so it doesnt get pinched, then if they dont arrive home by say 8pm then take it in again.Or ask her nieghbours either side of her to take it in.
I also take neighbours parcels in,but have never had this problem.

ALANaV Thu 12-Dec-19 12:51:23

Two things cross my mind : when I went away my lights were on a timer, as well as the radio. My neighbour had a key and opened and closed the curtains and re set the burglar alarm, plus taking any parcels, etc home with her (must add likewise, I looked after her two dogs when she was on hols, although this involved a 5.00am walk before I went to work, then her mother came and too over the dogs.....I walked them and had them in my house overnight when I got home from work ! I also just stayed in the house of a friend (young couple, very hi tech !) the tv came on, lights and the coffee machine, the blinds opened at sunrise and closed at sunset automatically ! even the front door had a remote lock he could open from his phone !! ha ha ...I put a light on manually one night and couldn't turn it off …..ha ha...their neighbour went past dog walking at 4.00am and said the next morning he was concerned the bedroom light was on and was I ok (fortunately he didn't knock at 4.00am !!)….talk about confusing the old ha ha …..I was glad to get back to my low tech house that doesn't speak to me !!!

Take it in, or if you are really of a mind, send it back to the address from whence it came …………….or go and put it on their doorstep from whence it may disappear ………...wait until the normal time they are due home !! good luck

Riggie Thu 12-Dec-19 12:43:34

Oops should have said both the delivery guy and I had left previous notes!!

Riggie Thu 12-Dec-19 12:42:43

I have put a dated note through one "neighbours" door saying that I had had their parcel for over two weeks and that if they didn't collect it by xxx date then I would return it to the sender. That worked but no apology so now I say no!!

Thecatshatontgemat Thu 12-Dec-19 12:40:46

Put it in a black plastic bin bag.
Secure it well.
Put it in your damp shed.
Forget about it.

If it's still there in six months time, open it "accidentally". Extract the delivery note, and contact the suppliers and get it collected.

Binkiebonk Thu 12-Dec-19 12:40:29

You must not dispose of the item under any circumstances as you could later be held responsible for its value!
