Charging Vietnamese families to repatriate their dead, trafficked, family members

I think so.

It is not the British Government charging the families as was stated in the OP - the Vietnamese Embassy has arranged this and their own Government is the one charging the families.

Whilst I do think this is wrong, it is also wrong for the OP to use this possibly fake news to score a political point.

Of course in the due process of the law the traffickers should be held accountable.

The haulage company that was involved with people smuggling should bear the cost of repatriation. Sell off the assets of the haulage firm, one lorry would more than cover the cost.

All I can find so far is the fact that the Vietnamese authorities are charging the families for the cost of repatriation, not that our Government is charging them.

The other case you mention is surely sub judice and extremely sensitive surely nothing should jeopardise that?

I feel also that we the British, shouldn't have to pay either.
As awful as it is the families wanted them to have a better life,and that`s fine sadly it won`t be happening.
But also if there`s money in the coffers give it to the poor of this country.
We have children looking after their disabled parents for nothing.
That`s child slavery if there`s money to go around give it to those who deserve it.

This is terrible - as if the families haven’t suffered enough. Imagine your child suffocating slowly to death in the back of a lorry and the terror they must have felt.

There’s a lack of basic compassion amongst some in this country - it’s like a race to the bottom.

That is the normal cost of repatriating a body.

Someone has applied the rules without thinking this through. We should pay for this and either ask their own Government to share the cost and/or use the money from the seized proceeds of the crime.

Yes, this would make me ashamed to be British. Oh course we should pay for their poor murdered relatives remains to be returned to them.

We presumably pay for illegal migrants to be imprisoned/ deported so paying this small amount is relatively tiny.

Saying you are charging the families sends out a tough lesson as in ‘look what you’ve done was illegal and this is how we will now proceed’ - it sends out a message to the world.

I doubt the government will even try to recoup money from these poor families.

Is the Vietnamese government in a position to pay? If they get charged for repatriation due to the human trafficking from their country they might be more disposed to look for the perpetrators - the ones who organise this heinous crime. It has to start somewhere.

I would have thought both Governments could have com to some agreement but that won't happen will it. I agree with craftyone in principle but again it won't happen. Morally I think we should bear the cost of this. Seems like the traffickers should be held to account for this as well.

The nasty piece of work in the Harry Dunn connection is the cowardly Ann Sacoolas, who will not leave the safety of the USA to face trial about the accident in which the boy died; it is not right to attempt to disrupt meetings by heckling, when Dominic Raab can do nothing in the face of diplomatic immunity. Try heckling President Trump, and see how far that gets.

Secondly, the migrants who died were attempting to force their way illegally into a county with which they have no legitimate connection. Perhaps the Vietnamese government will provide funds; it is not the responsibility of the British government, and it is not the 'least we should do.'
