What did you discover relatively late on in life that everyone else had known for years?

I was in my twenties when I discovered Yorkshire puddings were made to accompany beef and served with gravy. In our house they were served with golden syrup for pudding!

My father always gloomily told us the worst ever news....but never when things became normal.....so it was only recently that I was aware that the 2 week Cuba Crisis in 1962 is actually over .....I'm 73!!

The petrol pump icon position doesn't work on all cars - looked at mine today and gauge is on far left of dashboard with pump icon below. Fuel cap is on right side of car.

When I saw PMO of ads for cars in newspapers, I used to think it meant Private Motorists Only, and wondered why, till I discovered it meant Perfect Mechanical Order!

I didn’t know until I went to college (not in Yorkshire) that Yorkshire puddings could be served WITH the rest of the meal! In our house, they were allus served wi’ gravy BEFORE the rest of the dinner. Apparently, when money was scarce, parents would serve it like this and say to their children, “Them as eats t’most puddin’ can get t’most meat”!!

Patticake, in Yorkshire we had Yorkshire puddings and gravy on their own, before the Sunday roast . I'm told the idea was to fill us up so we didn't eat too much meat! And my great aunt would eat any left over cold puds with jam on Monday!

The thing I discovered when in my late 60s was that,( although I say it my self I'm a very good speller) I had been spelling the word 'dilemma' incorrectly since school. The teacher wrote it on the chalk board and i copied it down as dilemna . obviously misreading one of the ms as n. When my daughters pointed it out I denied the error vociferously until shown a dictionary!! Of course, these days, the computer would have told me!

That the Chasers on the quiz programme The Chase are the ones who set the questions, albeit years ago.

One of them let the cat out of the bag the other day when he said he remembered that one from when they had set the questions 2 or 3 years ago.

Marmite is great for Vegetarians but not Vegans as it is made from yeast extract, and staunch Vegans will not eat it. As was pointed out to me very loudly by a rather nasty Woman last year when I was catering a party for 120. It had been a Vegan friend who had said it was ok, I would not have minded but NW was neither a Vegan or a Vegetarian.

For years I thought that the year 1 BC was the oldest ever year it’s only recently that it dawned on me that it was the last year before 1 AD. It’s logical when you think about it.
