Baby names since 1904

There was a great monologue by Alan Bennett some years ago talking about fashionable names. The residents of the care home were all called Albert, Walter, Ethel, Maud etc only to be replaced years hence by Darren, Chardonnay and the like. Hilarious!!

Brilliant! Thanks for that. My granddaughter doesn't appear in the top 100 at all, and it was also my mother's name. My name was popular at the time of my birth, not any more. I guess in many cases you can tell the age of a person by their name! Interesting to scroll down and see which names were once popular, then dropped out, but have now made a comeback.

I was interested to see that DS's name has been consistently popular - except that it took a big dip about the time he was born!
I must have been bucking the trend.

Mine has never been in the top ten.
Neither has our DD's
DH has, also DS1 and DS2

Shouldn’t think mine has ever been anywhere in any poll except at the bottom, as it’s a boring name, not old enough to be trendy, not modern enough to be current, just a non descript unfashionable name. Have never liked it.

Mine was the most popular in the year I was born- probably why there were four of us in the same class at primary school although I was named for my grandmother.

My name last featured in the top 100 in 1904.
It disappeared completely, but may be making a comeback.
I don't think it will ever be popular again though. I've always disliked my name.

Probably will Tedber.... what set me off was hearing "love grows where my Rosemary goes" played on the radio, and wondering if that song increased popularity of the name, as I know a few "of a certain age".
But nothing conclusive there!

Doesn't really surprise me as my mum always strove for originality and was disappointed in my choice of kids' names as she regarded them as common. I would say more 'popular' than 'common'
