Mr Corbyn considers when the Queen completes her reign it would be an appropriate time to call it a day and have an elected head of state.

Kerenhappuch Mon 25-Nov-19 14:55:29

Well, he's entitled to his opinion, but unless he wins an election and this is in the manifesto, I don't think it's any more than that. One person's opinion.

Whenever this topic comes up, I wonder which politician in my lifetime I'd like to see as head of state, and shudder. I just don't think our political system is producing people who are mature or altruistic enough to make a good president - who has to act in the best interests of the nation.

Great post Tilly.

I do not think Jeremy Corbin is making the decision to end the monarchy but merely expressing his view.

I agree with him. Our Queen is exceptional. When eventually she passes, it will be the end of an era. An era of a blameless and dutiful Monarch who sincerely serves her people and the country.

The royal family itself has brought the end of the monarchy in its old fashioned dignified place into being. There can be no monarch to succeed the present Queen who will bring the respect and love that she receives from the nation.

It will be time to think of another way. To get up to date. And we can't have people gadding abroad in the name of being a son of the monarch saying they are doing service for British industry and trade or anything else for that matter. They clearly are not bright enough and do not have the acumen, morals or ability in any way.

I want to say that Princess Anne deserves respect for her dedication tot her work. She never asks for glory or riches. She knows her own abilities and uses them to help others in need. She has given years of service, quietly, honourably and without fuss. She deserves our thanks, love and support.

3 marriages , quite a record

I didn't realise Jeremy Corbyn had been married so many times! We hear all about Boris's relationship failures but little of this although I do realise that there is some difference if there was no infidelity involved. On both sides, I should imagine it is quite difficult to keep a marriage happy with the hours they work!
I would never vote with Corbyn because I sincerely disagree with his economic policies. If you look at the Labour record it has always ended with having to do up your belts because of overspend. However, I do think that JC is probably a sincere enough person and has never made any bones about his thoughts on having an elite Royalty. Once again, I don't agree with his view but it is hardly earth shattering news.

I don’t agree with Corbyn, Charles will be a good head of state.

An elected head of state , elections every few years, whoever was President would start campaigning, no thanks

Susanjaylibra Mon 25-Nov-19 14:04:36

I agree with Jeremy especially after the Andrew mess

Calendargirl Mon 25-Nov-19 13:56:14

How would it be decided who would be the elected head of state?
Oh, I know, we could have a referendum......

Pollyj Mon 25-Nov-19 13:51:58

Hmm. Personally, I consider the monarchy an outdated anachronism. I find, when people are finding things so difficult - many still working to help their adult children afford their rent, or struggling to make ends meet, I would have more respect for the institution if they said 'No. We are all multi-millionaires. There is no reason the tax payer should be funding the 'five-houses-knocked-into-one 'cottage' deemed necessary for Harry and Megan to live in, or anything else. We live rent free in a variety of palaces and mansions, we complain at 'intrusion' and take 6 weeks off to get over it when the ordinary person would be sacked, or unable to put food on the table. We accept the fawning celebrity status but don't seem to want to put up with what comes with it.'

I feel it is just wrong, in this day and age, to have this elevated family, funded by ourselves (yes, I know they bring money in, but can we afford this Mickey Mouse equivalent?)

The Queen has done a good job. The little I can know of her, she has put in her full effort and service. It isn't personal. But perhaps, yes, it is time to at the very least re-think our relationship to this family of people that some seem to put on such a pedestal.

Another reason, not to vote for Corbyn if what is posted is true.
I haven’t seen that written anywhere.

grapefruitpip Mon 25-Nov-19 13:16:02

I am inclined to believe a persons judgement is questionable when they marry twice, have a string of affairs, betray their partner and what ever else is not in the public domain ( yet)

grapefruitpip Mon 25-Nov-19 13:07:01

In this mad world the Windsors = stability to me

At one time, I would have agreed. My Grandma who remembered Victorias funeral, had respect an interest in the RF. I used to like to see what they were doing, what they were wearing and so on.

No more, any shred of respect has long gone.

I am inclined to believe a persons judgement questionable when entering into a third ???marriage unless through reasons of bereavement.

Jaycee5 Mon 25-Nov-19 12:47:31

Stella14 It is and people just become defensive or personal if you ask them for the basis for their generalised insults.
People will step over the homeless on their way to the polling station where they will vote for a party will increase their number. They cannot imagine themselves being in that position but it really can happen to anyone.

Tigertooth Mon 25-Nov-19 12:38:51

Corbyn is scary.

Aepgirl Mon 25-Nov-19 12:38:16

I think that could cause a revolution - that I would take part in.

GrannyBlossom Mon 25-Nov-19 12:34:37

Sounds like a good idea.

Stella14 Mon 25-Nov-19 12:32:07

It’s very sad that people believe anything they read and go on to vote like Turkeys voting for Christmas.

Anniebach Mon 25-Nov-19 12:31:54

In this mad world the Windsors = stability to me. Politicians come and go,same with celebrities.

Jaycee5 Mon 25-Nov-19 12:31:24

Chewbacca He hasn't claimed that it is his decision to make. He answered a question honestly about his own beliefs. He is not a dictator, even in his own party and this is unlikely to be on his list of priorities.
Our system does need serious reform, starting with the House of Lords.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 25-Nov-19 12:27:30

Surely, this can hardly surprise anyone? All monarchies have Socialists and other left wing parties that would prefer a republic and a president to a Queen or King.

I have no idea what the procedure would be for ending a monarchy, short of a revolution, but it certainly cannot be a decision that can be made by any political party alone.

nanamac77 Mon 25-Nov-19 12:22:24

Has anyone looked at the alternative? Candidates for 'Presidency' would be from , or similar to, this bunch of incompetents who are currently trying run the country - and I include ALL MPs and Civil Servants

Callistemon Mon 25-Nov-19 12:09:02

We have a non-political Head of State (well, non-partisan) and no, the Commonwealth would not want just any Tom, Dick or Harriet as their Head.

Anniebach Mon 25-Nov-19 12:06:41

Is it possible to have a non-political head of state ? Would they be wanted as head of the commonwealth? No.

Callistemon Mon 25-Nov-19 12:06:01

I agree that we need a slimmed down elected Upper House.

The number in the Royal Family who are paid to do work from the Sovereign Grant has been slimmed down and I think the word parasitic is a vile one to use about anyone.

Lesley60 Mon 25-Nov-19 12:02:50

And dissolve the House of Lords when they are at it, what a lot of money that would save.
Half of them don’t stay once they have signed in to get the money and the other half fall asleep, and we are paying for that, I can think of many things that money could be better spent on.
