To suggest that being a member of the armed forces should contribute to someone being on the road to disaster ie to an association with paedophiles is disgusting.

Callistemon there has always been a culture of machismo in the armed forces. It may have been somewhat diluted these days but Andrew was there in the '80s. Perhaps some might escape unscathed but with his family background he was unlikely to. Even at 60 we are the product of our family. Charles escaped by becoming as unlike his father as possible, Andrew adopted the same attitudes but these are different times. I think it's unreasonable to blame someone for the damage their family life has done. By all means disapprove of him and his actions but stop trying to absolve others from blame. He's the product of a ridiculous construct that should have been abolished years ago. The result of hereditary status.

trisher He was in the Royal Navy not the Army, and I find your insinuation that spending time in the Forces means that someone is heading for disaster of the kind he finds himself in totally insulting.

I don't understand why some people are putting so much store by Charles. His track record isn't great either. He certainly appears to have very bad judgment in his choice of friends and a misplaced sense of entitlement to interfere in, and try to influence, matters which are strictly beyond his remit, experience and expertise.

What young people's charity would want Andrew - someone who is either incapable of seeing exploitation and lewd/criminal behaviour when it is right in front of his nose, or who decides either to ignore it or take part in it?

To add on blame to the army for his associations with a serial abuser and exploited of children adds to the notion that somehow, Andrew is absolved from responsibility for his actions.

Alexa, your suggestion that Andrew could start a Twitter the “lowly” end of voluntary work by working with the children involved with the gangs running county lines shows how limited your knowledge is. The level of skill and knowledge needed to attempt to support county lines children is most definitely not at the “lowly” end of the scale. The gangs involved are ruthless and violent.

I have a certain amount of sympathy for Andrew (much as I disaprove of the RF). If you are brought up with a father who is serially unfaithful and a mother who ignores his peccadilloes you are bound to have a rather twisted view of women and relationships. If you also have a lot of cash and are treated as someone special things will be worse. Add a spell in the army and the possibility of disaster increases. He's not all that bright either.

Annie that's the sort of case I was thinking of. I think if The Duke could do some actual lowly work and not simply add his name as a patron, his work would be acceptable.
