White goods insurance

Thank you for all your advice , I am still within the cooling off period of taking out the insurance so I can cancel , and as advised put the £16 away , just hope it's only one appliance that breaks down !! If at all

Not worth it - and I spent my working life in the insurance industry.

I never take out the extended insurance, after the initial free one, usually a couple of years.
Last month my JL washing machine was out of the included 2 year guarantees due I received the offer to extend it. At first it seemed a good deal, until I read the small print that limited what would be fixed and that only when I’d had an on line discussion with an engineer to see if I could fix it myself!
If the machine lasts 5 -10 years it will have more than paid for itself.

I made the mistake of paying insurance for my washing machine. I have paid out enough to buy a brand new deluxe one, and for nothing because it hasn't given any trouble at all. I shan't renew this year.

I've always taken out this insurance but never claimed . This year , in an attempt at lowering my outgoings , I cancelled my insurances . I'm now living in fear that they will break down !

Nope, never have. When offered once for my fridge freezer I told the salesperson that if it broke down within a year, they'd be getting it back !
Appliances , on average these days, are only made to last about 5 years, especially washing machines!

We used to insure, but now put a few ££ away each month instead. A year's worth of insurance cost was almost the same as the price of a new appliance!

I honestly believe these insurances on white goods are a complete waste of money.

Never take out insurance, when we did the maths we thought it was a rip off, better just to update the appliances.

We are also fortunate to be able to replace as soon as needed we have a really good white goods shop very close to us and they will match any price from other suppliers and deliver the same day free of charge.He sells Hotpoint washers 1400 spin for just over £200 which is a good price in my book.
Also I think you will find you use your appliances less than you did when the family where all home .

I have a rental property so no control over how the tenants treat the appliances and have taken out insurance on all the appliances for £20 a month. Last year the washing machine packed up and was replaced within the week with a like for like machine. As it was a washer dryer that came in at over £500. Which didn't cost me a bean. I don't buy top of the range appliances but nor do I buy really cheap ones such as £192 for a W/Machine mentioned above.

You also need to look very carefully into the insurance details for hidden charges.

Agree with all the above - put the £16 pm/£192 pa into a savings account to repair or replace when the time comes.

Have never taken out this kind of insurance: agree fully with other posters here.

When our new kitchen came out of warranty we were offered insurance cover and it would have been about £300 a year to cover all the appliances. We didn't take it because we thought we could replace anything for that amount. Nothing did need replacing in 10 years. We moved and now our washing machine is 10 years old and not needed attention.

DH used to over insure everything but, because we are in a position to replace if necessary, we no longer do. If replacement would be difficult it would be a different matter.

No, I never take insurance for white goods - you’re lucky to get it for £16 - very rarely do any of the appliances give me problems / 16pm x 12 =192 . You could prob buy a new washing machine for that - that’s my opinion anyway - all my appliances have served me well .
