Sunday tea

What did you have on a Sunday (or maybe Saturday) evening, to eat?

If we had company on a Saturday, my mum would make big crusty bread sandwiches, with pickled onions and tomato quarters.

We were allowed to eat in the front room (living room) and that was unheard of, usually.

I remember that we ate more in the fifties, probably a post war thing.
Sunday tea was a very formal affair in our house, always sitting round the table. Cold meats , pork pie etc. Tinned fruit with Carnation milk and then home made cake. All this followed the traditional Sunday lunch. I had to go to chapel three times each Sunday, no day of rest then.
I loved rice pudding and porridge made with Carnation milk as well.

That made me laugh about the cat having a go at the salmon sandwiches, oldgoat as it reminded me of my mum going hairless after our cat had been licking the cream off the trifle so mum got a palette knife and scraped off the area where the cat had been then smoothed it all over. We were having visitors for tea but as you say, nobody died.Hahahaha.

grannyactivist I'm not sure if we had second best butter or not but we had Anchor or Co-op's own brand as far as I can remember.

However, my mother used to buy half a pound of Lurpak which was 'Mum's butter', not to be used in sandwiches for the rest of us!

My friends parents used to buy chocolate on a Saturday night.
A Mars bar each, and one bar between the 5 children!

My friend said it tasted like heaven, and it never occurred to them that it was unfair.

Callistemon Tue 05-Nov-19 10:10:28

My Dad used to buy a small paper bagful of assorted chocolates every Saturday.
I'm sure they were Cadbury's Roses so they must have been sold loose in Woolworth's?

Gonegirl Tue 05-Nov-19 10:11:13

I used to buy them until Woollies closed down!

Gonegirl Tue 05-Nov-19 10:11:30

those (probably)

As a special treat I was sometimes sent to the baker's to buy six mixed buns. The buns were mostly 1d each, apart from the cream doughnuts which were 2d.

I can remember having the occasional packet of iced bakewell tarts after lunch on a Saturday. My granny always gave me hers because they hurt her remaining teeth. sad

Thinly sliced bread and butter, home made potted beef and lettuce, homemade fruit cake and Victoria sponge. Then off to chapel for 6 o’clock. Supper when we got back was something on toast, generally cheese or scrambled eggs. All with copious cups of tea.

My Grandma used to make some fabulous cheese thing. It was like cheese on toast, but wasn't. It was made in a pan. Cheese. Drop of milk? Maybe some egg? Tomatoa? I've no idea. But it was divine. All stringy and yummy and I do wish I'd asked her what it was and how to make it!

We never had savoury food for tea on Sundays. Bread and butter sliced thinly with honey or homemade jam. Scones, homemade cake. Pot of tea. Supper later was usually cheese and biscuits with coffee.

In the sixties: sandwiches, often egg and cress, usually cut into 4. Sometimes a bowl of crisps alongside. Homemade cake. Tinned fruit. Pot of tea. It was the only meal of the week we ate in the front room and was brought in on a trolley. Off to evening service at church afterwards.

I wonder if that's what we always called Welsh Rarebit Oopsminty but I don't think it is in fact Welsh rarebit.

A drop of milk, melt grated cheese in the milk then add beaten eggs, salt and pepper. Serve as soon as it's set otherwise it goes a bit rubbery.

We used to have that but never on a Sunday.

SueDonim
I still buy those sponge flan cases from Tesco when we've got strawberries in the garden and put the red Quick Gel over the top.
Lush. smile

Oopsminty Tue 05-Nov-19 15:43:24

Oh sharon103. That's almost made me cry. My Mum used to do that.

Yes, Calllistemon! That sounds possible. Was it a bit stringy? Obviously the stringy part has had a huge impact on me.

I might get Mr Minty to give it a whirl .

Thank you!

Ooo yes BradfordLass72 . I used to buy Heinz Sandwich spread years ago. We loved it. I can remember the taste even now.

PernillaVanilla Tue 05-Nov-19 15:47:09

Egg and cress sandwiches, milk jelly, cake. My mother made a particularly delicious fruit loaf, wish I had the recipe.

I suppose it depends on the cheese:egg ratio.
I tend to put in more eggs and strong cheese for flavouring.

My mum used to fry bacon, then fry cheese in the bacon fat shock delicious but high cholesterol!

Callistemon Tue 05-Nov-19 15:56:14

sorry, I put in less cheese to eggs

What amazing memories you all have! I haven’t the faintest idea what we had for Sunday tea. We always had a big roast lunch, which my mother was very happy to make because it gave her a good excuse not to go to church. She had been made to go to church three times every Sunday when she was a girl, and it didn’t convert her. We children went to church with my father.

On Saturday evenings my aunt and uncle often visited. We usually had sandwiches or bridge rolls with egg, sardine, tomato or similar fillings/toppings. Probably cake as well.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 05-Nov-19 17:12:57

tinned salmon or ham (f we were lucky) sandwiches. Home made cake like a victora sponge and either tinned peaches or jelly and evaporated milk;

The cocoa and a biscuit before bed.

SueDonim Tue 05-Nov-19 18:42:47

Right now, I really want one of those sponge flans with mandarins and organise Quick Jel on it. grin

SueDonim Tue 05-Nov-19 18:43:12

Organise?? I don't know where that came from!
