How romantic are we!

We got two cards in the morning post addressed to both of us and wondered who on earth was sending Christmas cards so early.
Opened them, they were wedding anniversary cards. We had to go and check what date our wedding was and which anniversary it was.
Obviously a memorable occasion!
Is anyone else like us?

My husband has always been useless with dates and always used to send a birthday card to his Mother on the 13th of May although her birthday was the 12th. So he thought we should get married on the 12th May and we did. His mothers had died about 20 years before. One year we were moving abroad and actually left England on our wedding anniversary without realising it until the next day when we signed for our house and saw the date. Usually we manage to have a meal out on that date but this year it was spent at the hospital having tests for cancer so no celebration.

My son is extremely romantic and sometimes makes me envious that my DH never was.

One year he took a little table, lace cloth and chairs to the favourite beach of his girlfriend, whose birthday it was and when they arrived served strawberries, cream and champagne before presenting her with a bouquet of roses.

Perhaps it's because he was born on Valentine's Day?

He was my best Valentine's Day gift.

Ours was two days before my birthday, and both our birthdays were on 29th, though different months. It helped DH to remember, though he often dashed out on the day to buy a last-minute card. We never bothered with anniversary gifts though. It would have been out 56th this year.

I remember a Miss Valentine marrying a Mr. Valentine at our church, some years ago. Naturally, they wed on Valentine’s Day. One wedding anniversary that would be hard to forget!

Happy anniversary Mamo. Sounds like you had a lovely evening.

Mamo Thu 31-Oct-19 22:16:46

We’re just home from a lovely meal celebrating our anniversary today, 38 years! We got married on Halloween before it was such a much celebrated event. Then kids came along and we obviously always spent the evening with them, either out and about our local neighborhood with them in scary costumes, or at home giving out treats to the children who called. Finally now they’re grown up we can turn off the lights at home and go out for a nice meal. Don’t give cards or presents, but my DH gives me flowers often for no particular reason, so I’m happy with that and I love him to bits!

My husband is the romantic one in our relationship. I have even been known to forget or mix up the dates! In my defence, I'm not very good at remembering many dates - I am simply not good with numbers! Words, now - that's a whole different matter! I often have to ask others about different family members birthdays etc. I DO know my husbands birthday and NEVER forget that! I'm not really one for birthday and anniversary celebrations at all. I'm good at Christmas Cards though - I will start writing mine this weekend (we send about 40 still!).

Some funny comments. Glad to be of assistance Icanhandthemback. ?

I missed your post CrazyH. How awful and you too MadMaggie. So so cruel. How do some people live with their conscience.

I usually manage to remember our wedding anniversary, DH only does so if he happens to look inside his wedding ring!

Sadly, there are few left who remember the date.

Congratulations to all who have an anniversary coming up.

We never remember ours. We have been married 54 years. I think.

GinJeannie Thu 31-Oct-19 13:41:00

Years, not yeasts! Oh these dam varifocals!

GinJeannie Thu 31-Oct-19 13:40:17

Twenty odd yeasts ago, DH and I sent each other anniversary cards with very appropriate and lovely verses....so much so, we decided to keep them and use them every year as would never find better ones! It’s 53 years this year and so it continues but all we need to do is to remember where each of us put the ** card last year!

jaybee66 Thu 31-Oct-19 13:38:22

It is our 50th anniversary next August (we were both teachers so got married in the summer holidays) and we are going to remember and celebrate it.

SirChenjin Thu 31-Oct-19 13:05:06

DH is better at remembering than I am - but then I am not romantic in the slightest, never have been, and see cards as a momental waste of money and environmental resources.

Which reminds me, I need to book annual leave for our silver wedding anniversary next year. I wanted to go to Dresden after seeing a documentary about it but he vetoed it, said he wasn't going to the site of one of the largest allied bombing raids in WW2.

We forget every year, only reason I remember is my friend sends me a text. We have our 50th in 3 years I think so maybe we will remember that

Elcie Thu 31-Oct-19 12:09:03

We usually forget our wedding anniversary, and tend only to remember if someone happens to mention the date on the day. It’s no big deal to either of us after 39 years.

Stella14 Thu 31-Oct-19 11:38:51

We always celebrate our wedding anniversary. We have only been married for 4-years though and we were both previously married to the wrong people for decades.

jocork Thu 31-Oct-19 11:26:16

My ex was very much into celebrations - his family all were, whereas my family much more low key. I found it quite stressful early on. One nice touch we always tried to buy gifts that went with the particular anniversary. eg Ist anniversary (paper) he bought me a paper craft kit. Some we bought ourselves a joint one eg crystal (15 I think) we bought a set of crystal wine glasses. We parted copany just before our 19th and not sure what that would have been.

I send a card to my DS and DiL for their anniversary but don't know if they get many. They've only had 2 so far so time will tell if I still remember in a few years time.

allule Thu 31-Oct-19 11:26:07

The only time I remember the date of our anniversary is when I need it as a security answer for the bank.

Oh, we did have a big family party on our 50th

icanhandthemback Thu 31-Oct-19 11:13:35

Well done, annep1, for posting this. I relayed your post to the DH who reminded me that it was our anniversary tomorrow. I had completely forgotten!!!

ninathenana Thu 31-Oct-19 11:07:35

Madmaggie ??

BusterTank Thu 31-Oct-19 11:07:02

My husband and I both forgot our tenth anniversary but we have made a point never to do it again . We only buy each other a token gift but the thought is there . We have now been married 26 years .

Madmaggie Thu 31-Oct-19 10:55:26

CrazyH your post particularly resonated with me. That was a very cruel thing to do to you. You wonder how they could, but they do. My first H suggested we renewed our vows in my family church for our twentieth (we wed overseas) & have a do afterwards. He was enthusiastic & suggested guests, venues etc. At the same time he was chasing another woman and consulting solicitors for a divorce! He ensured the papers were served on me at home while he was out, came home & refused to discuss it!!! Found out later he'd been syphoning off money for some time to fund his new single life & his apartment in the lake district.

Madmaggie Thu 31-Oct-19 10:35:11

Annep1 the trick is to write your Anni & important birthdays in the diary you buy yourself in the january sales for the year ahead. The next trick is remembering to look at itsmile

Tigertooth Thu 31-Oct-19 10:01:00

My friend always reminds us as she’s the same day! They make a big deal of it.

Davida1968 Thu 31-Oct-19 09:51:19

Usually remember our anniversary and have a meal or something, but very low key. More importantly, I think we're very lucky to continue to love and care for each other and to enjoy each other's company, throughout the years, after more than 30 years....
