Not much time today so only managed 12 medicine spoons !
The land is dry, and the people are ...stupid?
Richard E Grant's Very Modern Odyessey
I am today making a pledge to throw something I don't want or need away or give to charity every single day from today until Xmas Day. I know I hoard too many thing.
Yesterday I threw away 26 folders of degree notes and teaching file notes. I have been retired two years now so do not need them anymore.
Today I have been looking in my wardrobe and found a blu ray player box that has been there for 3 years. I know it is shameful.
Will anyone join me in a pre Xmas de-clutter and try to throw something away, even if something small every day?
Not much time today so only managed 12 medicine spoons !
Can I join, please?
I'm generally de-cluttering, not because of Christmas, but because I have a lot of clutter.
Still at it. Chose a few books I never look at, added them to the pile and took two big bags to our local hospice shop yesterday.
I am planning soon to tackle my drawer of batteries, test them all and put the rest in a bag for recycling.
Sometimes during this exercise I find I have even more stuff than I thought. I have found, for example, bundles of envelopes, a brand new (but very old) pack of J-cloths, a pack of old postcards, and some electrical stuff that may or may not have a purpose. More decisions....
I have a big bookcase, full of dusty books that I'm eyeing up.
It takes up quite a lot of room in my hall, and I've seen some neat little tables and cabinets which would look far nicer.
Its just that they're my books. They've lived there for years!
Miss Adventure when is the last time you read one of those books? If more than 1 year thing about donating them to a charity shop so someone else can enjoy them. When you are there you might see a few books you have not read before and buy them.
Hoping I have convinced you. The tables sound lovely.
Well, some I'm in the process of reading (it's a long process!) but I have lots of hardback books which have been read time and again..
They are definitely going to have to go; I did take a big bag to charity last week, but its a nuisance on the bus.
If I keep chipping away at it though, I'll get there.
I also have tarot cards, runes, and so on. All jumbled up on the shelves.
Today I threw away calendars from 2011, 2012 and 2014 all unopened. Bought by my MiL I am afraid and I only put one up each year and that one is with pictures of my dgc my dd makes for me each Xmas. I am looking forward to my next one. I also threw out some old tights with ladders in and old underwear and now have room in my drawer for a few new pairs of tights. A few odd socks in bin too. More empty boxes from garage. I can only throw a way a couple each fortnight as they take up a lot of room in recycle bin which is only emptied every 2 weeks. I have given my niece some plates and a large meat plate as she has same dinner service and we use a different one now. She was pleased with them so just shows much better than sitting in bottom of a cupboard never coming out. I am going to get foster child to go through his toy box and books to make room for Xmas toys and books. I have been through his clothing and found several items that no longer fit. A few sweatshirts and jogging trousers going to my great nephew who I often send his small clothing too but his good suit to a friend who has a child two years younger and he will wear to an upcoming wedding. I am still going strong with so much more to get rid of because I have neglected to de-clutter for far too long.
Greenfinch every little bit is better than none at all. It all adds up if we keep going each day with one or two items.
Nanabythesea, Sarah65, Juno56 any luck today?
Good morning newnanny
Have to confess, I missed yesterday, but this morning I have added two boxes of Christmas table mats, that still leaves me with two complete sets of twelve, I am wondering if maybe I only need one!
I too missed yesterday but today I put three inflatable neck rests in the charity bag and threw away two 60th birthday banners and a cardboard tube that once held a document of some sort.
I can report a therapeutic afternoon spent sorting out DH clothes. Much easier to chuck his stuff than mine. He has admitted that he has gone up a size so everything that doesn't fit has gone. It's ok he still had 18 pairs !
I'm finding it useful to see what others have got rid of as it reminds me of where else needs sorting. For instance the reference to old calendars. I read that and thought I didn't keep those and then checked a desk drawer only to find three! I was saving them as I liked the pictures but then never looked at them again.
Currently going through old photos.
A big bag of books gone today, along with some shoe, a handbag and other bits and bobs.
Today, husbands tie drawer, lots of bow ties, unlikely to be worn again, and a good sort out of ties, he won’t notice!
Right...I have an "under the stairs" every few months I tidy it out and de clutter (always have a black bag full of something)
Yet when I put the clutter stuff back in, it doesn't make any more room!
Have you Gransnetters been sneaking things in my "under the stairs" whilst I went to the loo!!
Today I put a bath bomb and a trivia quiz game in the charity bag and a 2016 calendar went in paper recycling.
I was quite ruthless today. I have filled the new to me book shelf with all the books I really like and have 7 small crates of books for charity or at least for DH to go through because they are mainly his.
I have disposed of loads of magazines to recycling.
I'm exhausted now.
I wasn't very ruthless.
One gold coloured "thingy" in the bin.
I'm not sure what it was, but its been underneath a pot plant for ages and the "gold" had worn off.
A few books to the Oxfam book shop and a bag of clothes that no longer/ never did fit me to the charity shop.
Yesterday, Friday, a jumper that no longer fits me in the charity bag and today two T shirts and a Halloween scarf.
I cleared a whole filing cabinet of old work stuff last night & found someone who needs the cabinet.
Today I am heading to the charity shops with two bags of the 'best' stuff I've decluttered over the last 10 days.
This decluttering is tiring but very satisfying ?!
I've inspired OH to sort his unwanted clothes but haven't managed to get him to take it to the shop - that's left to me!
A productive decluttering day today. I have thrown away three artificial leis (from an Hawaiian evening) and lots of 'spare' buttons in their little plastic bags from unidentified items of clothing. In the charity bag three more books and in a separate bag for textile recycling several pairs of old socks which either have holes in them or are about to develop holes.
newnanny, I am so impressed by this thread and by your continued de-cluttering. Having moved home last year, we haven't that much "stuff" now, but I still keep finding items for the charity shop. Today's "finds" are a large & beautiful, Dartington-glass wine carafe (used once) and a large paperback, (popular author) which was passed on to me and I've now read. Off to the charity shop tomorrow....
