Pre Xmas De-cluttering Pledge support requested

I am today making a pledge to throw something I don't want or need away or give to charity every single day from today until Xmas Day. I know I hoard too many thing.

Yesterday I threw away 26 folders of degree notes and teaching file notes. I have been retired two years now so do not need them anymore.

Today I have been looking in my wardrobe and found a blu ray player box that has been there for 3 years. I know it is shameful.

Will anyone join me in a pre Xmas de-clutter and try to throw something away, even if something small every day?

Already been doing this for the last week.

Funnily enough I had a big clear out of my upstairs at the weekend. 4 bags for life of stuff went to both DD's, 3 black bags to our local charity shop & 3 black bags of clothes went in the Salvation Army clothes bin ?

I only live in a small apartment. We don’t have hobbies (so I daresay we need less space anyway). I think one item a day really adds up. I did it last year for a couple of months and found it liberating!

Good luck everyone. It feels good.

I have just started 2 shifts a week in charity shop and plan to finally finish wardrobe clear out I have 3 large storage boxes full of perfect clothing if I take 6items in every time that will be 22shifts = 132 items also to put 1bag of recycling clothes with bin every 2weeks.
Have to do it know ,, put it on gransnet

I love clearing out clothes and ‘stuff’, going to the tip or a charity shop is one of life’s joys, unfortunately it hasn’t been adopted by my DH who has clothes going back to the 70’s - annoyingly that still fit him, lecture notes from his days at University, books that were published when Adam was a lad and more clutter and junk than you could shake a stick at. I think your idea is easy to achieve, but someone else I know wouldn’t entertain the idea!

I’m in as well...just finally got rid of my old leather sofa...hurrah! Awaiting replacement chairs!...but....loads of old winter clothes and old cushions also to go to the charity shops plus coats and other unwanted items...great idea...

I'm in too... I'm overwhelmed by 'stuff' although much of it isn't mine.

Great idea. I've just sorted all my summer clothes to put away and last weekend filled a suitcase with things for the charity shop. They particularly seem keen to receive wool and jigsaws.

I’ve just bought a few items of winter clothing, I like to get it out of the way then don’t have to worry about having the right thing to wear, but I try and go by ‘one new thing in the wardrobe, one old thing out’. So I’ll be taking some stuff to the charity shop but will try and do more. Definitely got too much ‘stuff’..

My wife and I do some decluttering each day and have steadily been adding to recycling boxes, especially with the amount of paper, card and cardboard we are getting rid off. Bags in the corner of a spare room are also steadily accumulating items that can be reused and hopefully bring in a little cash to hospice charities. Useful items, particularly with educational value, are being passed to families whose children will value and make good use of them. We believe that every little helps and we can all make an effort and a difference with the small steps we take without getting overwhelmed. All we do will also be environmentally beneficial.

You're on, newnanny! I'm off out soon so I'll look for something to take to the charity shop. Strike while the iron is hot! No time like the present. Never put off till tomorrow... etc. etc.

new nanny, well done I would love to join you. I am ok with some things but clothes i am murder at throwing them out. I just keep holding back for some reason. Maybe you can give me some good advice to get started.

inishowen Wed 16-Oct-19 12:39:02

I'm in the middle of a declutter because we're decorating the playroom. Boxes and boxes of toys, books and clothes have gone. I LOVE DECLUTTERING!

fizzers Wed 16-Oct-19 12:43:52

I'm on with the clear out now, good idea to throw/recycle something out up until Christmas

Fallen at the first hurdle! Did two days and then became full of cold so cannot be bothered. Must do extra when the bug has gone!!

Today I am tackling clothing. This is a huge task for me as I have a thyroid disorder and tend to go between clothing sizes more than normal. I have 5 wardrobes of clothing which is ridiculous. I am aiming to drop off 6 bagfuls to charity shops by the weekend. I have even got dh looking through his stuff but he is a worse hoarder than me.

newnanny Wed 16-Oct-19 13:21:47

I am starting on trousers as I don't wear them often. I shall keep three pairs that fit and the rest are going. That is the easy bit for me.

We were an Air Force family and consequently moved every couple of years so that was our clean out. Now we are retired and have lived in our home seven years now and no moving. Time to get cleaning! Great ideas.

Startingover61 Wed 16-Oct-19 13:44:39

Good idea. I have a lot of scarves and wraps that I don't wear, and my wardrobe could do with a clear-out.
I like ninathenana's suggestion, too, about the 'reverse advent calendar', so will commit to this from 1 December.

I have a bag ready for the charity shop but just reading this thread I feel they are going to be inundated. Do charity shops really need all this" clutter"?( a question for those who work in one).
I regret the demise of the jumble sale where you could get rid of much that wasn't top quality.

Canalboatgranma Wed 16-Oct-19 13:54:01

I have started by taking a bag full of carrier bags to the charity shop. On the downside I have become interested in junk journaling and so am now collecting vintage books and ephemera. Newnanny I would have loved your file folders to repurpose

Lilylaundry Wed 16-Oct-19 14:43:22

Last week I had a good wardrobe clear out, I even got rid of the stand alone wardrobes (to the British Heart Foundation who take undamaged and re saleable furniture) and had fitted wardrobes installed in two bedrooms.

Told my husband not to get in my way or he could well end up in a 'clear out' bag and be displayed on a charity shop shelf.

I've got the bug now, every day something goes. LIBERATING OR WHAT?

sharon103 Wed 16-Oct-19 14:53:09

I'm with you newnanny. I have already filled a big box which is ready to go to the charity shop. I have plenty more to sort out and things to go on Ebay. My son deals with that though. My bedroom's like a tip and really getting on my nerves.
I hate clutter. I'm painting a bedroom at the moment and so must sort it out when I've finished.
