Things you lend out and never see again....

I lent my partner to my friend to help out with a few DIY jobs. Wanted him out of my hair for a while and was thinking how to give him the old heave ho.... She still has him

I think it’s hilarious as he’s absolutely hopeless at DIY and her house is probably bodged and patched up now...

She’s welcome to keep him. I don’t want him back hahaha...

I’m happier and my house has never looked better.

I suppose you say as another poster said “I’m sorry, no, I don’t want to lend it”. If you lose their friendship, tough. Why don’t they just buy their own as you have done?
I think people would soon stop asking if you politely refuse to comply.

After a lifetime of 'lends' that turned out to be gifts, when small DGS requested the loan of a book we enjoy at my house, to read with his parents, we had a discussion about borrowing. The need to keep track of something you have borrowed, and look after it. The need to return it.

That was a couple of years ago, now. Occasionally I have to remind him, but he is usually very careful to return things promptly. As he says very solemnly when he hands them back to me, if he doesn't return them, he might not be able to ask to borrow things in future.

So he gets lots of loans from Grandma.

Years ago, I lent my neighbour my spare keys so he could use my washing machine whilst I was at work, his had broken and it would take a few days to fix. He returned the keys, but, unknown to me, he had made a copy of them and continued to use my machine and tumble dryer for months. I came home unexpectedly one day, found him sitting relaxing with a brandy (my bottle), listening to my CD on my player, waiting for his drying to tumble dry!!!!
Although I was furious and shocked, threw him out, took my new keys off him, but, I felt so sorry for him as he didn’t have much, and financially he was struggling. He confessed everything and was so sorry for what he did too.

You sound the ideal person to lend goods to. Sadly, according to other posts, your attitude is not the norm.

So all you good people who do not lend things out, How do you say no when someone asks especially when they can see it? we have people we hardly know asking to borrow tools for big industrial jobs and do not really want to lend them out and asking for them back is a nightmare of oh yeah I will bring it back next time

My brother borrowed my hot air paint stripper . Broke it . Bought himself a new one then kindly said I could borrow his if I needed to !!

A strimmer - that my brother swears he never borrowed in the first place.

My son's highchair - lent to a cousin for her son -supposedly short term - I found out later she had sold it when she had used it and bought her son a new one!
My son's baby buggy - to a friend so she could take it on holiday for her son. It was destroyed when it got caught on the luggage carousel at some point - she claimed and got paid for it - did I see any of the money ?????

I used to lend items out for them never to return. I am afraid I now use my husbands saying I never lend and I never borrow and that is what I tell people now. Having said that I would lend something to my very closest friends as I know that I will always get them returned.

My sister borrowed my sewing machine 41 years ago, she still has it. As we don't talk much it's unlikely I will get it back!!!

I lent a friend some dvds which have not been returned should. I ask for them to be returned the box has my name on it

I don't lend money to anyone, after bitter experience with a person. I also now rarely lend anything, so sick of not getting things back. Ive lent out picnic items, books and cds. Stopped that completely when felt you get taken for a mug. That old adage 'never a borrower or a lender be' certainly rings very true. I also find once you begin to lend things that you never have people away from you wanting to borrow, this ,that and the other. It gets wearing.

Toothpaste! when our children stay they invariably forget toothpaste so come into our bathroom with the request "can I borrow some toothpaste?" Well borrow implies it will be paid back, I reckon we are a couple of tubes down at least that together with the "bailouts" over the years, so yeah toothpaste and a billion pounds I'd say would cover it

My younger son has also made off with numerous books and almost my entire vinyl collection, the other one a double bed, chests of drawers, sheets, towels, his dad's Berghaus jacket, he'd have had the house if could have picked up and stuck it the boot of his car,

A very special cake book to someone who I really am very surprised at for never returning it. I fear she sold it as I haven't seen it in her home.

Cat basket, two single mattresses, several tea chests, quite a lot of money.

DD ' borrowed ' my good rucksack for a car rally. She swears blind it's hers. Good thing I don't need it any more.

Also, we had a really nice bookshelf from John Lewis which DD appropriated when she moved into her first flat - leaving behind the cheapo one we bought from B&Q for her uni shared house.

When my DD asks to borrow money, I know I'll never see it again?

Tools, books, kitchen equipment, crockery and some Lego come to mind. My major gripe is Mr C lending people my garden tools which of course I never see again.

I remember, as a child, that I had a set of lovely stickers, that said Ex Libris , that I could stick in my books, with my name on them.

I know my sons are slow at getting back tools/ladders/wheelbarrows they borrow from dear old dad, but don't feel too bad about nagging them for return.

Books I don't really expect back, except for the odd one and I will put a post-it note on the inside front cover as a reminder. I do the same when I borrow a book from a friend, or I will forget who I borrowed it from!

I do remember once being a bit miffed at my sister-in-law saying she never lent out anything. I was heavily pregnant at the time, and my large canning-pot was in the attic, 20 lbs of peaches were ripening, and DH was away. Up to the attic on the top of a step-ladder I went, but I grumbled the whole way. I remember feeling offended that she thought I was untrustworthy. But perhaps she had been burned once before.

I went to a golden wedding and I don't possess an evening dress. A woman I hardly knew said I could borrow hers with all the trimmings and I did. I wore it, enjoyed it, had it cleaned and returned it. Everyone was happy.

Oh dearie me. I've just agreed to lend my good friend my Michael Kors glittery silver evening bag, used only once.
She's attending a wedding in Italy and will use it most probably for the full week she's away. Such scope for disaster, the likes of which I hadn't even thought about until reading this thread. Me thinks I may not be able to locate it for her.
