I remember the milkman coming with a horse when I was very small. As children dds found this absolutely hilarious - '... back in the really olden days, Mum, when you were little...'.

I remember the local brewery with horses and cart, and pretty sure I remember the milkman and coalman with horse and cart too. All 1950s.

I got my dad to gloss paint the wood and we bound the metal handle with an old suede belt.
The base of the basket was flat and the dishes we carried home did not spill.

Oh yes, I remember the mangle. Mum used to do the washing in a gas fired boiler, carry it outside where I would turn the handle of the mangle whilst she fed the washing through.

This thread has reminded me of the time my mum was using her electric mangle on her Hotpoint Countess washing machine and the pussy bow on her blouse got caught in the mangle!! Thank goodness it had an emergency bar which she was able to push up and it stopped the mangle instantly.
My poor mum was so shaken she had to have a cup of tea and a cigarette before she could continue

Funny how you can't think of anything till you read the posts! Noananna My brothers and sisters had rose hip syrup in dinkies. My mother thought dummies were common but they still sucked the air out of the dinkies when the syrup was finished and their teeth turned out to be appalling. We used to pick rose hips for 3d a pound which were collected by school to make the syrup. Anybody else do that?
