This was a very popular thread a few years ago and I thought I would revive it.
We welcome happy days, sad days and even slightly boasting days , every thing that has happened is very welcome.
I said when I mentioned that I might start this thread that my own life was very boring, getting up, eating, GN and going to bed.
How things change.
My 20 year old eldest GC has moved in with me, totally unexpectedly.
She has had a somewhat troubled life which I won’t go into but she is my best friend, the most supportive of my family with my H , she adored her GD and was my best help when he died.
I am somewhat overwhelmed by today’s events but so happy she has chosen to be with me.
To get to the mundane, we have had a lovely roast pork dinner with all the trimmings and I am now enjoying a glass of red before I go and sort the kitchen out.

Thank you BlueSapphire
It really was a sticky mess, I scraped it, wiped it with lots of kitchen roll and it is in the dishwasher waiting to be done at lunchtime when I have other stuff to go in.

Yesterday : Breakfast club for 2 GS. On the way to school the 9yr old asked ‘is it true that you can only swear after you are 12?’. Gulp, Intake of breath. ‘well in my house it would have to be 16 but really it's better not to swear at all; it isn’t very nice’. (This from an arch swearer ?) ‘Mummy says it’s 12’ . Right. Ok. ‘I’ll just swear in my head then’ pipes up the 8 year old!
Later a massive cleanup of things which have accumulated over the last months. The bed was covered with pots of cream, make up, nail stuff and all the detritus of long over kept, out of date ‘stuff’.
Emergency call from DD to pick up boys as she and her DH were delayed. They ate continuously over 3 hours : toast, biscuits, cereal, fruit and finally a huge plate of pasta. Apparently it’s a growing spurt. My children never had those ?
I could have cried when SiL arrived, looked at a bottle of whisky (late DHs) I’d had for years and which I’d opened for friends recently, and told me it was/had been worth £100s at auction ?
Bed.
Have a good weekend everyone!

annsixty, I use those washable, non-stick Teflon liners in my roasting tin when I make that.

What I intended to do: go out into the bush to pick kumerahou and come back with friends to show them how to make an infusion and face wash to help acne.

What I actually did: got up to find it was raining. If there are any herbalists among you, you will know it's best to gather medicines in dry weather.

Message on FB said my friends couldn't make it anyway. Perhaps tomorrow?

After three whole months of daily and often torrential rain, surely we are entitled to a sunny one?

So I made smoked fish pate and ate some with 2 Ryvita and a salad..
Found some home-made shortbread I'd forgotten so blitzed that and sprinkled it on top of sliced banan, stewed apple and a few raspberries and made a yummy crumble.

Put some laundry out on the deck where, when it rains, it won't get any wetter then sat and listened to an audio book about the conundrum of death and how to cope with it
("Waiting for the last bus" by Richard Holloway) whilst finishing off a multi-coloured scarf made from all the left-over bits of wool.

Still a bit snotty, so glad I bought an extra box of tissues on Friday.

Just got back from seeing ‘Judy’ at the cinema starring Renee Zegweler. Amazing. Superb performance. Cried my eyes out. Poor Judy Garland - those film studios - perpetrators of child abuse. I didn’t know she was only 46y when she died.

So sad.

I made some hot chocolate and toast just now, comfort food after being upset! What a heartbreaking story.

annsixty Fri 04-Oct-19 23:07:22

Haven't we got some adventurous grans?
Have a wonderful holiday Alygran

CanadianGran Fri 04-Oct-19 22:34:21

Alygran, that sounds like a really nice trip! I would like to do similar some day.

I'm on the west coast so it's still working hours here. My hubby had surgery on his hand yesterday, so this morning was a bit chaotic since he can only use one hand. He is retired but I still work, so I am used to him doing tidying up and dishes in the morning.

I did go home at lunch and he managed to make me a toasted ham and cheese sandwich, so he is coping!

Even though I am at work, I manage to keep gransnet open in the background and take a few minutes when things are calm. Love hearing about everyone's day.

gillybob Fri 04-Oct-19 22:30:40

Well I’ve just settled in bed absolutely shattered after another busy day. “First “that place” then picked up little Evie, shopping for my dad, collecting his prescriptions etc. Made him a quick sandwich then dashed home to change the baby. Bundled back into the car and then had to see to my sister’s dog as her usual dog walker had let her down. Weather horrible so we got soaked . Back home fed, bathed and changed little Miss who has been like a mini whirlwind . DH and I had a pretty pathetic pizza (out of the freezer) for supper and we are now all collapsed in bed. Little Miss will be singing with the birds in the morning . Grandma will be like a zombie.

I hope you and your DD have the most amazing holiday in the USA Alygran smile

Goodnight all x

Whitewave I am going to San Fransisco then driving around California. Then Vegas and Grand Canyon. DD2 is coming. Flying here from Manchester on the early flight.

MiniMoon Fri 04-Oct-19 21:25:55

I had an unexpected visitor from lunchtime onwards. Grandson 2 came. The rest of his family were going bowling and he didn't want to go. We had lunch, and afterwards we watched The Minions movie on TV.
He went home at 6pm. Husband and I had supper and now we're watching Gardener's World.
Not the afternoon/evening I was expecting, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Oct-19 21:16:18

annesixty I soak mine then bung it in the dishwasher.

alygran where are you going?

moggie Fri 04-Oct-19 21:11:35

Alygran ?. I‘ve Had a very lazy day. Joined you in glass of vino tinto this evening gillybob

Alygran Fri 04-Oct-19 20:43:40

Finished packing and tidying up. Caught a train to London -cheap First class seat so lunch included. Caught a tube to Heathrow, got a free bus(!) to the hotel. Short walk, G and T then dinner in the hotel restaurant. All interspersed with reading my book which I am going to finish before my early night. Feeling proud of myself as that was the first time I have done something like that without DH.

annsixty Fri 04-Oct-19 20:08:24

Ps, it made a really sticky mess of the roasting tin.
I will try lining it with foil when I make it again, which I certainly will.

annsixty Fri 04-Oct-19 19:49:52

My GD and I have just eaten a one tray bake recommended by kitty on another thread.
Chicken thighs, new potatoes, small mixed peppers , red onions and whole garlic cloves all tossed in olive oil and oven roasted for an hour.
It was delicious, thanks kitty.
Going to watch a dvd when my GD gets back from her nightly walk round our estate, as in housing estate not stately home estate!!

Alexa Fri 04-Oct-19 19:29:40

What nice food grans eat! What a recurring pleasure food is! Paddyann I can just imagine how lovely it was for your daughter to chat with her Daddy as he worked.

NotTooOld Fri 04-Oct-19 18:24:28

Shopping at the supermarket this morning. I am doing most of the local driving now but DH still does the long hauls. Came home, felt very tired after playing badminton yesterday evening and then having a late night due to Question Time. Tracked down a charity that can use the stuff I sorted out from my over-stuffed airing cupboard yesterday and they have just collected it. My sister called to tell me about the cruise she is going on next week. DH now lighting the woodburner as it is cold this evening. Now I'm going to cook supper (salmon slices, new potatoes and lots of greens) and look forward to a cosy evening.

cornergran Fri 04-Oct-19 18:06:07

It’s been a funny old day. Raining for most of it. The high point was a painless flu jab this morning. Last year it really hurt! Did a small food shop, had a long and worrying phone call, faffing with paperwork this afternoon, at least some is done. Given up on finding a plumber until next week. Are they extinct? About to cook a meal and relax for the evening.

Kerenhappuch Fri 04-Oct-19 17:58:32

Got the bottom shelves and boxes out of my fridge for a wash - they've been driving me mad with their grubby appearance, but it was harder to get them out than I thought it would be.

Had a grocery delivery from Ocado, put the perishables away. I've been too tired to do a big shop this week, so this should have caught me up enough to be able to make meals next week.

I have a 48-hour ECG monitor on at the moment, so I'm unable to have a shower, so I ended up slobbing round in my PJs all day.

Watched quite a few episodes of The Politician on Netflix, because I got very interested in the story.

BlueSapphire Fri 04-Oct-19 17:49:49

Went into town on the bus - bank and shopping. Bought some nice leggings and a jumper in Primark last week, so went back and bought the same but in different colours. Also got a nice top which I can wear with said leggings or jeans. Nice fresh veggies off the market.
Put curry in slow cooker, picked DGD up from school, read some of my library book.
Just waiting for DGD to be picked up, then will have a sherry and nibbles before the curry!

Wheniwasyourage Fri 04-Oct-19 17:42:20

Went on the bus to the big town to collect something for DH, who is still on a programme of increasing walking-time every day after his recent surgery. Came home, went shopping, had lunch, sat down and read a book. DH's afternoon walk took us to the supermarket, then came home and did a very little gardening, then listened to the radio. Now looking forward to my evening meal and a lazy evening!

KatyK Fri 04-Oct-19 13:52:05

I walked to my sister's to check on her house as she is away. Then on to buy some flowers for a friend's birthday tomorrow. Home made soup and crusty bread for lunch. Yum.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Oct-19 13:25:14

Gave the terrace outside the backdoor a good clear up and tidy.
Bit of washing, now picked in as looks like rain.
Helped DH cut down a rampant clematis
Order glycerine to use to preserve some autumn leaves and stuff for wreathes.
Lunch of ham sandwich
Shower and hair done for visit to ex-work friend who has broken her arm.
Waiting for a lift from another ex-work friend.
Pre-frozen Pork and bean casserole for supper.

ginny42 that sounds divine. Love to see a photo of your completed project.

Alexa Fri 04-Oct-19 12:51:06

Nice lunch Ann! I might try that it's ages since I bought blue cheese or beetroot.
