This was a very popular thread a few years ago and I thought I would revive it.
We welcome happy days, sad days and even slightly boasting days , every thing that has happened is very welcome.
I said when I mentioned that I might start this thread that my own life was very boring, getting up, eating, GN and going to bed.
How things change.
My 20 year old eldest GC has moved in with me, totally unexpectedly.
She has had a somewhat troubled life which I won’t go into but she is my best friend, the most supportive of my family with my H , she adored her GD and was my best help when he died.
I am somewhat overwhelmed by today’s events but so happy she has chosen to be with me.
To get to the mundane, we have had a lovely roast pork dinner with all the trimmings and I am now enjoying a glass of red before I go and sort the kitchen out.

I got up very early and drove to Stevenage to care for my grandson. We went to his music class, I stood and watched the buses and cars with him. Then we went for coffee. We stayed in and played lorries and crayoning this afternoon. Then I bathed him and put him to bed. I’m now collapsed, exhausted on the sofa waiting to repeat it all over again tomorrow before driving back home. I love being a Grammy!

Hold your head up annesixty I read the comments on ‘that thread’.

Try not to dwell on it.

Just regard it as the cut and thrust of a debate if you can. The remark cut you to the quick I can tell.

GrannySomerset it was ever thus.
I have been licking my wounds after being told off on a thread.
I made celery soup this morning, quite good, did a load of "darks" which I didn't even try to put out.
I had a friend come round to take some books off my hands, she was pleased and so was I. Only two more boxes to go.
My GD and I have had fish cakes for supper, now she is doing some exercises and I am watching a dvd, one of the ones I kept.
Have a good evening everyone.

GA - it wasn’t meant as a criticism so much as an observation! And of course not you! And of course it’s the same with every organisation; with working life getting ever more demanding people simply don’t have the time and energy to put into community efforts that perhaps they once did.

grannyactivist Mon 30-Sept-19 19:50:17

GrannySomerset it was ever thus. I must confess though that I actually joined the local WI with the avowed intent of just 'tagging along'. grin

I work full time juggling two very demanding voluntary jobs and needed something for me where I could simply be a passenger. My family and friends all thought that I would be on the committee in no time - they just didn't believe I would say 'no' when asked (as it was a fair bet I would be), but I have stuck to my guns and declined to be cajoled into doing more than I determined I would.

I do my turn on the tea rota and donate books and raffle prizes, I support all the activities that I can and I am just about to give my second talk (hopefully I shall be well by then), but I can't afford to take on anything extra and I am very fortunate that my fellow WIers understand my position. smile

Have spent most of today reading long ago minutes of meetings of our WI which celebrates its 100th birthday shortly. I am trying to create a display but we don’t have anything like a complete set of books so there are some huge gaps, but it is fascinating to notice that some things never change and that there is a small group in each generation which does all the work whilst the majority just want to tag along.

My grandaughter dyed my hair pink yesterday. I love it!

Feel almost human again, a bit of sinus pain but nothing like it was. Absolutely delighted. smile. Food shopping, some tidying and even a little ironing.

What did you think of Bletchley Park grannyg? We were there two years ago and enjoyed every moment, but then we weren’t turfed out in the middle of tea hmm.

A very wet morning here but the afternoon fairly dry if oh so windy. Not pleasant to be outside so I stayed in. There’s a flood warning for high tide. The waves have been coming over the sea defences, just a little fortunately. Happy belated birthday gonegirl, always good to celebrate.

Rest well everyone,

Church this morning-v uplifting service. LOADS of food donated for harvest for food bank. Lady spoke on Psalm 23-you know, the Lord’s my Shepherd.
Walked round to visit a lady whose husband of 59 years died recently. Sadly can’t go to funeral. Will visit her again afterwards-must be hardest time.
Tried to visit new neighbour who had a spat in the road with an inconsiderate parent parked for local school but he wasn’t in. Hope there’s no repeat tomorrow-poor children having to witness bad behaviour.
Had just over an hour’s chat with my dear sister-grrr-we always try to ring back before the hour’s up cos an hour is free.
Watched Strictly on catch up-fed up with audience shrieking so can’t hear lovely singers and musicians.

Gonegirl Sun 29-Sept-19 22:40:46

Thank you annsixty. smile

Have been away for the weekend visiting relatives yesterday and then Bletchley Park today. Just as we sat down to afternoon tea the fire alarm went off and we had to wait outside in the pelting rain!!!

annsixty Sun 29-Sept-19 22:29:09

Happy Birthday Gonegirl

dragonfly46 Sun 29-Sept-19 22:28:57

We went to see Phoebe Waller-Bridges live show at the cinema. She is amazing. I believe this is her Fleabag one woman show originally performed at the Edinburgh festival and what she based her series on. No wonder it was sold out in London.

Gonegirl Sun 29-Sept-19 22:24:54

I have had my birthday celebrations today. Lunch with the family at pub, then back here for presents and party food. smile

rubysong Sun 29-Sept-19 22:22:15

I hope it is ok to tell you what I did yesterday. It was the centenary service of Cornwall Federation of WIs and I carried our WI banner (among many others) in Truro cathedral. It was a lovely service and the cathedral was full. The colourful banners looked marvellous. I was the driver and four of us went. The journey home was an hour and a half of strong winds and torrential rain. We were very glad to get safely home but had really enjoyed the day.
In the evening I went to our local history group and listened to a talk about the civil war in Cornwall.

Ginny42 Sun 29-Sept-19 22:09:45

Gosh, you were brave MOnica. I think it's going to be better weather, but colder. In fact I noticed the clouds were coming from the north this afternoon. Drove through torrential rain up the M56 to my sister's for lunch and the spray was so bad I didn't take the Mway home.

Spent some time trying to get my head round my GS's maths homework! Fortunately we found an excellent website which explained what to do, as he swore the teacher hadn't shown them. Probably wasn't paying attention more like.

Put the heating on tonight, but off to Spain for a little holiday this week hoping to build up some resistance to winter ills and chills.

We have been on an outside pitch at the Peterborough Antuques Fair for the last three day, quite an experience. On Friday a sudden squall picked up our gazebo, each corner weighed down by a 20lb weight and only DH and DD hanging onto it, stopped it disappearing. Meanwhile I was clinging to a table with all our china and glass on trying to stop it blowing over. Everything was saved but we packed the tent and the valuablegoods and delicate china into the van safely and yesterday just traded with stock that was water and wind proof.

The fair ended yesterday so today was a nice quiet recovery day. A good lie-in, leisurely bath, then brunch in the local Lounge. a wander around DD's town before getting into the van and driving home. We got home to spend the rest of the day doing nothing much - except I started getting some winter clothes out, summer is definitely over.

annsixty Sun 29-Sept-19 21:38:04

Such a busy day, not particularly welcomed.
For those who don’t know my story, my H died last April after 60 years of marriage.
Last week my GD who is almost 21 moved in with me, her father already lives with me, but they don’t have the close relationship they should have.
She has decided to take me in hand and is sorting out things which needed doing ages ago.
We have sorted out books, dvd’S and utility room cupboards.
A visit to charity shops and the tip is on the cards.
My contribution after telling her what I absolutely wanted to keep was to cook a Sunday dinner and for once my Yorkshire puddings rose to the occasion.
I am now in bed and so tired.
Weather wise it has been wet, wet, wet.
Can we hope for better this week?

Callistemon Sun 29-Sept-19 00:38:41

What a lovely thread!
Today has only just started but we hope to have a relaxing day after a hectic but enjoyable time.

annsixty we visited the Villa Maria vineyard last week - it was lovely and of course, we had to taste some of the wines, have a delicious lunch then purchased more wine to enjoy later.

Marmight Sat 28-Sept-19 23:46:31

Your dinner sound delicious Ann. How lovely to be with your granddaughter!
I spent the day rehearsing from scratch and then singing Vivaldi’s Gloria with a church full of strangers. A happy day making new, temporary friends ...and there was lots of cake to sustain us throughout the day ?
Home & have been watching some episodes of ‘Anne with an E’ (Anne of Green Gables) on Netflix. Such a lovely story ; I’m sitting here all emotional. Amybeth Mcnulty as Anne is amazing

AllotmentLil Sat 28-Sept-19 21:52:11

Found this thread a couple of days ago but as I’ve been in bed with a flu-y bug there was nothing much to say! Got up today and watched Ireland being beaten by Japan in the rugby. ☹️ Had a lovely chat with DD while half watching Namibia v RSA! Athletics after that till Strictly. Oh dear, I never usually watch so much telly - but I’m still in the recovery phase!
Thankyou for starting this thread Ann and for all your contributions - I might have something more interesting to tell you in a day or two! ??

Marydoll Sat 28-Sept-19 21:29:02

We like it too! Heard about it on GN.

creativeness Sat 28-Sept-19 21:22:50

Jacq 10 I am liking Scarborough too! Quite quiky + laid back.

jacq10 Sat 28-Sept-19 20:50:10

Thanks again annesixty for starting this post - I hope it rumbles on for a long while and also thanks for your idea for the chicken breast. I will be trying that very soon.
Marydoll - you were very fortunate to get a dry day in Fort William. It is notorious for bad weather especially heavy rain so well done!! It has been a lovely afternoon here in the north of Scotland after heavy rain through the night.

PS: I am also enjoying Scarborough annesixty but until now haven't found anyone else who does!!!!
