driving habits?

I beg to differ here. I loved it, when I lived in the UK, that you could make eye contact with other drivers and know that they were, for example, letting you pull in from a side road. Here (Eastern Europe), they avoid eye contact at all cost, so they won´t have to let you in. If a driver´s eyes are not as good as they were, they shouldn´t be driving.

I think we're better off just sticking to the rules of the road, rather than relying on someone beckoning us. I can't imagine a more unsafe way to drive, than to have drivers waving / beckoning to each other as they move along . Just stick to the rules and we'll all be safe.

Driving in a busy area, you never would get in from a side road, unless a kind person gives you a nod and a wave.

Anyone else get fed up at being flapped at by a driver when you are waiting at a zebra crossing? You are a pedestrian with a foot on the crossing. The driver stops and then flaps at you as if to say “get out of my way pedestrian you are hindering my passing”. Then you get the kn.b who refuses to make eye contact and drives straight across as though you aren’t there. I can think of a few bad driving habits, certainly not dependant on age.

Disagree. I’m always grateful when someone gives way. Just another of these narky old gran threads I think.

I, too, am always grateful when people stop to let me out of a side road, but why, when I do it, do I get some slack jawed idiot who just sits and stares at me until I do, indeed, flap my hand at them?

I agree with Stella

In some traffic conditions, letting people out can be sensible and considerate, but in normal circumstances it should be avoided as it is a recipe for disaster. The rules are there for a reason.

I agree with Stella - I find 'helpful' waving can be quite confusing.
