Today in Guildford, I was reminded if a thread a while back re persons who are fat/overweight.
I was beyond shocked to see 4 simply huge men and similar women, at different times, none of whom were together and all of whom were truly enormous.
I would find it unbelievable if all 5 were to fall back on the 'I'm diabetic' excuse.
The idea that people can let themselves get into that state and keep eating (as 2 of them were) is very sad indeed and then they moan that they can't fit into bus or airline seats and can't work because of A, B, C or D.
Are there no answers to obesity because there were also some seriously overweight men whose man boobs and bellies hung pendulously over their trousers.

On another note.
I had an appointment at Virgin Money in Guildford.
On arrival I was immediately greeted by a beautifully turned out advisor who offered me tea, coffee, biscuits...?? and showed me to the several sumptuous velvet armchairs and settees piled high with velvet cushions.
The 60" tv was showing the BBC afternoon news and weather and my drink was placed on a coaster on a glass table.
A man with a hi-viz vest was lounging on a swivel chair opposite, dunking biscuits in his tea and reading a newspaper.
At one end of the room was a fully kitted out kitchen with a white modern dining table and chairs and a 'rest room' with M&F loos situated on an adjacent corridor.
The ceiling lights were enormous with plush red, gold and black drum shades inset with circular mirrors which reflected the floor areas.

I completed my business seated on a red velvet banquette with a top spec Mac pc suspended from the ceiling which could be pulled down and angled to suit the advisor.
When I left, she invited me to drop in any time I'm in town to take refreshment and read, watch tv chill out.
This begs the question where does the money to support this, come from?
I don't even bank with them, mind you, the furniture was utterly luxurious. ?

In fairness, Gonegirl, it wasn’t clear that the original post about buying Ferragamo shoes was aimed specifically at Gabriella. If you hadn’t seen the previous mention of them (I hadn’t), you wouldn’t have known that she’d bought any. In that case, poking fun at the shoes wasn’t personal.

It’s been a strange thread, but I hope nobody is put off posting because of it.

We only have to watch our grandchildren to know that when people are personally unpleasant to each other, it will not end well!

It really should be possible for adults with the accumulated wisdom and life experience of us Gransnetters to discuss controversial topics without it descending into a personal slanging match. I suspect that none of this would happen in a face-to-face discussion. It is a similar syndrome to that of rude car drivers who hide behind the anonymity of being cut off from their victims. I have noticed, for example, how my very gentlemanly OH becomes more aggressive and a lot less courteous when behind the wheel of a car! It frustrates me no end!! confused I suppose we all react differently when we see people face-to-face, after all we are social beings.

The love, support and sympathy which pours out from Gransnetters when an OP has a problem, is really really moving and something quite special. I suppose it is because the OP's vulnerability is exposed and we see them as a person, not just an abstract manifestation of opinions opposed to our own.

As the gran who had a designer draw up plans for her GD's bedroom, I would like to say I have never said anything to Gabriella that is unkind or even commented on this thread. She makes a lot of intelligent observations and is entitled to her opinion.

Gonegirl Sat 14-Sept-19 09:24:38

(I do like Gabriella's pink warts quote. It is quite clever. All due respect to the poster whose name the original is)

Callistemon Sat 14-Sept-19 09:22:46

Oh dear.

Gonegirl Sat 14-Sept-19 09:06:05

I can only say again, I did not realise it was the OP who had a pair of those shoes. I thought it was any old random poster that had posted on GN that they had a pair.

My post where I said I was sorry came out as being sarcastic. I didn't mean it that way. Gabriellas post did make me feel sorry about this whole thread.I am going to ask for my to be deleted.

I have been miserable all night about this. I think I might be better having a break from GN too.

annep1 Sat 14-Sept-19 08:45:08

Gonegirl I thought you were very rude about the shoes, childishly so. Perhaps I'm misinterpreting and if so apologies but GabriellaG54 doesnt seem to mind so why should I bother.
I'm off here.
Think I'll give GN a rest!

lemongrove Sat 14-Sept-19 08:40:25

All I can say is the sooner this thread is deleted the better.
It’s entirely possible to answer the points in the OP without
Swearing, bitchyness and all round general witch hunt sorts of posts, including personal and derogatory comments.

Elegran Sat 14-Sept-19 08:28:05

As the person who first mentioned Ferragamo shoes, can I just point out that Gabriella is only in the limelight because she reacted to the name by rising up in a fury at (supposedly) being pinpointed in a general description. She had not been identified - if she has in the past posted about her shoe-buying, I doubt anyone would have remembered without her indignation.

BradfordLass72 Sat 14-Sept-19 08:04:43

Callistemon If you live in the USA and are over a certain girth, you are compelled to buy 2 airline seats, even if it is clear a slender person could easily sit next to you in comfort.

In New Zealand, very many Maori and Pasifika people are extremely large, as were their forebears.
There is little or no prejudice against bigger people in these cultures.

We also have prestigious national competitions each year to find the best culture group from each of the Islands and within Maori tribal areas.

These teams practice almost every single day and nearing competition date go into 'boot camp' mode; the level of exercise being phenomenal.

Callistemon Sat 14-Sept-19 02:50:15

Genuine question for Gabriella - if you're still on here.

You have mentioned overweight and obese people on several threads and I wonder why you have such a concern about this.
Is it because you are genuinely worried about a possible health crisis due to obesity, if so why?
Do you or some of your family struggle with their weight or have a problem so this is a personal concern? If not, why does this seem to worry you so much?

It would impact on others occasionally such as being seated next to an obese person on a plane but I can't think of many other instances where this would affect others.

Callistemon Sat 14-Sept-19 02:38:05

Gonegirl your Lewis Carroll quote grin

Callistemon Sat 14-Sept-19 02:30:50

Ps I'm not bullying Gabriella (I'm sure she knows that) but just wondering why people assume that overweight people must be inactive and lazy.

Callistemon Sat 14-Sept-19 02:28:02

Why would you assume that someone who is overweight doesn't exercise? I've just seen an extremely overweight (obese) young man doing tribal dances; he was agile and nimble, just brilliant, probably more so than some of the slimmer dancers. He must dance twice a day most days entertaining tourists.

He was extremely charming too when I met him afterwards.

GagaJo Sat 14-Sept-19 01:29:35

JulieMM,

If she’d noticed how many disabled people or ethnic people, would that have been offensive or racist? Of course not.

Actually, if she'd pointed out how many X ethnicity people there were and was rude about them, YES that would have been racist. Your saying 'of course not' doesn't alter the offensiveness.

Common sense gone made when someone who is rude about others turns the tables and makes out their innocence.

If you keep doing the same thing, and getting the same response, maybe you should look at the thing you keep doing and change it.

Amagran Sat 14-Sept-19 00:23:57

Agreed, JulieMM. Unacceptable bullying.

GabriellaG54 Sat 14-Sept-19 00:04:05

Sincere apologies to those ladies who have PM'd me.

I've just checked my Google account before going to sleep and have new notifications from GN plus senders' names but no text in message boxes.
Thanks to all and I'll reply ASAP when the bug is fixed.
GN are still sorting it (hopefully) but Samsung, who rang me today, did not find a fault on my phone ... so it's over to the tech boys at GNHQ ?
I'll also remember to get the circus thread moved.
Goodnight, sleep well and enjoy the sunshine while it lasts.
BTW.
I watched Seahorse the other evening.
All I can say is ???

Maggiemaybe Fri 13-Sept-19 23:55:27

You value a kind heart, pinkquartz? Do you really think your posts are kind?

maddyone Fri 13-Sept-19 23:54:44

I agree Julie, it’s bullying.

gillybob Fri 13-Sept-19 23:47:48

Exactly JulieMM

JulieMM Fri 13-Sept-19 23:46:39

Oh my goodness! Having read through this thread I cannot believe the vitriolic comments and accusations made towards Gabriella. She made observations about anonymous people she’d seen in the street. If she’d noticed how many disabled people or ethnic people, would that have been offensive or racist? Of course not. She was making an observation and thereby inviting discussion. Why on earth does she have to be insulted and pilloried by so many people who have been so much more offensive, personal and cruel? YOU are the bullies by being so nasty to her. Shame on you all.

GabriellaG54 Fri 13-Sept-19 23:39:46

I won't be investing any more time on here so I'm out.

GabriellaG54 Fri 13-Sept-19 23:37:28

pink warts
I'm not GG or Gabrielle.
What taunts did I make to the people I saw?
I didn't speak to any of them.
Your post is totally laughable ???

gillybob Fri 13-Sept-19 23:30:18

Haven’t read this entire thread at all but get the feeling that it has been a bit of a witch hunt by the “holier than thou” contingents.

Yes I hope it’s a lovely weekend too . I need a bit of sunshine in my life . sunshine x
