Putting off phone calls.

I really don't like using the phone, don't know why. I'm annoyed with myself today. I was referred for an urgent hospital appt 4 weeks ago and heard nothing more about it. Both my sons nagged me to ring and see where I was on the waiting list but as I didn't know the doctors name I didn't want to make a fuss.
Today after 4 phone calls I tracked him down to be told I had been discharged for missing 2 appointments! Turned out they had sent the letters to my old address even though all my other hosp appt arrive without trouble.
Now I have to go back on the list all because I didn't make a fuss.

How infuriating! I hate making phone calls too.

Kirkcubbin. No you do not have to go back on the list and it is nothing to do with whether you rang the hospital rang back or not.

The hospital cocked it up, they were inefficient and sent the letters to the wrong address despite having the right address.

Ring them up and say that it is completely unacceptable that you should suffer because of their inefficiency. Contact your consultant, write to the chief executive, complain to your GP.

A hodpital did this to DD half way through what was 5 years of treatment after an accident. She did what I suggest above and everything was sorted and she was seen within the week.

I am not a 'phone' person. I prefer to 'chat' over a cup of tea, unless Ofcourse with friends and family who are far away, and even then, I prefer whatsapp texting - I was always better at writing than talking ,

Most of the time at work we were on the phone to customers. I have no worries about picking up the phone and calling someone, especially as most numbers are programmed and you just have to press the button for the first letter of the name.

DH is not so comfortable, he puts off phone calls or schedules them for as late as possible. I'm surprised he doesn't have a shower first and change into suit and tie. Then he shakes and stutters once he's through.

I am also reluctant and often avoid using the phone. Not sure why.
Re your situation kircubbin I woukd agree that as the hospital sent appointments to the incorrect address it is unreasonable that you should have to start the process again. A phone call might be in order.....?

I don't have a problem using the phone to call say the doctors, bank or someone in an official capacity but I do put off calling family and friends preferring to e-mail or message them. No idea why really,

I think we’ve all gotten used to texting, or WhatsApp if you have a smartphone (I don’t). Or email, Or Facebook (I never joined).

I am perfectly comfortable calling non family - the doctor, dentist, uncle Tom Cobley.

Family? Depends really. Busy young families. Working full time. And of course that conversation might stray into unchartered waters..... Families can be confrontational/emotional/direct and put one on the spot. Sometimes it’s good to test the waters first ...

I don't mind phoning anyone, and usually do.
Recently we ordered a new garage door. We were told it would be 6/7 weeks until delivery. Well the time came and went.
So I emailed the chap, four times, and had no reply. I was beginning to think he had pocketed the deposit and disappeared.
This morning I decided to phone him instead.
Result.
The door will be fitted in 10 days time.

I hate making “those” phone calls too. The ones that you know you should make but you really don’t want to hear what they have to say . I totally sympathise with anyone who doesn’t want to hear bad news,

Patsy70 Thu 12-Sept-19 22:39:11

I agree with Monica that you should not go back on the list as it was their mistake. In some circumstances this could be a matter of life and death! We hear about these things. Please don't ignore it, make that phone call and insist you get an early appointment - be assertive!

annep1 Thu 12-Sept-19 22:43:42

Monica is right Kircubbin. Don't let them fob you off.
I absolutely hate chatting on the phone. Don't mind business calls but personal ones - no!
I often text back making excuses like sorry I've a headache.
Prefer text or email which give you time to think. Not so tiring either and don't give you cramp in your arm.

MissAdventure Thu 12-Sept-19 22:47:24

I put off phone calls too.

I've needed my hair done for about 2 years now!

Its not even as if I'm particularly nervous, its more of a mental block.

One of the reasons texting is so popular is that it removes one from the immediacy of personal contact by phone -which many people find hard.

Our hospital has an e-mail contact for confirming appoiuntments or enquries and I find tht much easier, although I'm not fazed by phoning most of the time. If a phone call has any element of anxiety, such as if I'm complaining about faulty goods, then I prefer e-mail.

Your hospital probably has a website with an option for feedback and even complaints.

Use that to tell them you shouldn't be penalised for their inefficiency when they have had your new address for ages.
Don't forget to add you NHI number smile

Another one today! 3rd this week. Gas engineer didn't contact me, waiting a month. They have been phoning me on the number of the previous house owner!Anyway I've phoned another handy man to do a different job and also got the gardener organised.Well done me.

MissAdventure Fri 13-Sept-19 16:47:30

Yes, well done you! smile
I'm going to phone my hairdressers tomorrow, because of this thread (I was going to do it today, but.. well..)

I hate telephones and use as little as possible. My family keep in close touch with Messenger and I never ring them in case I disturb them when they are busy.
Other people are welcome to ring me, I just can’t bring myself to call them.

lemongrove Fri 13-Sept-19 18:35:08

I’m happy to phone friends/ relatives and would rather I do that than they phone me: for one thing I can pick a time to suit me, and another is that a lot of my friends like to use the full hour to chat, which is fine sometimes, but not others.

lemongrove Fri 13-Sept-19 18:37:13

phoning a decorator/ plumber etc about work they agreed to do, (rather than emailing) is better....puts them on the spot.
They can claim not to have received emails.

MamaCaz Fri 13-Sept-19 18:47:31

Another one here who hates using the phone. I always have.

I much prefer text and email, where I can put exactly what I want to say, no more and no less, with no room for ambiguity, and where there is no danger of awkward silences either.

With official things, I also live the fact that text and email - or even web-chat - can be saved, providing proof of what has been said or agreed, which can prove invaluable sometimes.

MamaCaz Fri 13-Sept-19 18:48:35

... 'like the fact', not 'live the fact'!
