Vicks on the soles of the feet with socks worn on top is supposed to be the best way to stop coughs.

I made it home from the hairdressers before the rain but it is still dripping into the hall. Luckily our Kong suffering roof man is coming first thing tomorrow.

Our family are quite big on occasional get togethers and, having just been told that it's our turn to do Christmas, I could wish we weren't. That'll be 21 for lunch then.

We have had a flurry of birthdays in the last week - 2 sons, 2 Dgds, 2 brothers, an aunt and a sister in law in the last week. I think I got the correct presents to the correct people but it's too late now.

I'm with maw and others in finding the world outside the kitchen very dispiriting but do keep an eye on you all and TOYA.

Like anno, I remember the winter of 1946/7. I started school in January and had so many layers of clothes (woollen vest. Liberty bodice, Viyella blouse, serge tunic, hand knitted cardigan and then thick coat, that I couldn’t bend enough to remove my wellingtons! It was utterly miserable and I think some young Extinction Rebellion members need to experience it so that they understand the world they are predicting for us all. I do rather doubt that any of us old enough to remember the 1940s and 50s would be keen to forego our modern comforts if we could possibly avoid it.

What did I tell you? As soon as I left the house, the first raindrops fell. At least it's not torrential this time. Fingers crossed.

anno I loved pixie hoods. Mine was a Fair Isle pattern. I remember that winter well. It was, what us lot would call a buggeration.

Tomorrow we'll be celebrating our 31st wedding anniversary. Truly good years, shared with a truly good man.

As we'll be out for part of the day, here we are back in 1988.

soop, after I'd had pneumonia at the age of 6, I had to wear a liberty bodice plus a vest. It was the very hard winter of 46/47 which a few of you might remember! Add to that a thick woollen coat and pixie hood, I must have been really roly-poly. My late mother would probably be surprised to know I had survived for well over 70 years!
Need to go out to do some shopping - with trepidation, as I believe it will pour with rain as soon as I put a foot outside.

A very happy anniversary to Izabella and her dear husband. I'm hoping that the weather is being kind to you. So sorry for being seemingly flippant about torrential rain. I wasn't fully aware (until I saw the news bulletin) that floods were causing so much havoc in some areas.

anno Snap! Vick was always used on our chests and under our noses when we suffered colds as children. Did you ever wear a fleec-lined liberty bodice? Very cosy.

Just to share a laugh...

My youngest daughter came over yesterday and we watched Gardener's World on catch-up (very good episode). Anyway, I realised my daughter is turning into my grandmother.
One of the people featured was talking about her garden and my daughter tutted. I couldn't imagine why so I asked and got a tight-lipped reply.

"Well, she's certainly a stranger to a hairbrush."

I nearly choked on my biscuit!

ann not seen the post but ignore it. I constantly write comments then delete them. I sometimes do send them and they are totally ignored. I think some of them are so attached to their bandwagons they cannot see the land around them.

I have been properly told off and accused of being jealous of my “betters”.

A very happy anniversary to Mr and Mrs Izabella. Truly hope the returning lurgy will pack it’s bags and depart.

Grey and miserable here today with a couple of flood alerts, could do with some more gentle Autumn weather, tired of the rain.

Our family also isn’t big on celebrations ann, like you I wish it were otherwise. Sometimes I can make it happen, failing at the moment with a birthday. Leaves me feeling somehow inadequate.

Hope all goes well with the drains and water anno.

Having gone full circle water-wise with this post I’m off. Out to meet a GN friend, it will buck me up, always does,

Went to see Phoebe Waller-Bridges live show curtesy of the National Theatre at the cinema last night. We found it excellent but then we loved Fleabag. Maybe not everyone's taste but she is one clever lady.

Another one here not posting so often.
I have been having some down days but having my GD here is such a lovely thing.
Yesterday she organised me into getting rid of some hoarding.
I cooked a nice dinner as a reward.
Today is GS2’s 18th Birthday, I don’t get to see much of him although recently he has been visiting more and occasionally stays overnight.
I hope to see him later or tomorrow, he is at 6th form college and has a part time job
We do not have the sort of family that gets together and celebrates, a huge upset for me.
I am still waiting (hell will freeze over first) for his mother to get in touch to tell me her thoughts on my H’s death 5 months ago!
I hope you all have the best day you can

Good morning Izabella, and Happy Anniversary to you both. What a beautiful description of your morning view. It sounds idyllic. I hope the rest of the day measures up. Sorry about your coughing lurgy. When I was little, my mum used to put Vick on my chest and in my old age I still swear by it. Just now I am sneezing probably because I've been trying to clear a path in my cellar (historically coal hole) so that the people who are coming to collect my defunct freezer can manage to take it out.
As for the drains, I think we were lucky yesterday because one of the roads just a bit further up was flooded and had to be closed. I wonder where that flood water went, if not down this road.
I'm sure I have seen Maw somewhere recently. Maybe on another thread.

Morning everyone. I have been awake for ages having had a resurgence of my lurgy. The instant I lie down it is cough cough cough. However a wondrous sight over the realm when I raised the blinds. The mist wraiths had been busy leaving opaque fairylike trails of mist weaving in and out of the treetops under a clear blue sky. The pond was sparkling under the sun and it was breathtakingly beautiful. Even the usual raucous crows seemed enthralled.

Wedding anniversary today - and yes you guessed - I have not a clue where I put the card I got for CH ? No doubt it will turn up eventually.

annodomini I am relieved your drains are holding up A lot to be said for that! And soop I am not really worthy of any great respect for dealing with 'Al' but thank you for the thought. dragonly you are in my thoughts. A party for the Panaches would indeed life ALL our spirits. Have just returned from a visit to Bletchley Park just as we sat down for afternoon tea this fire alarm sounded. We were herded our into the pouring rain.

The fire brigade turned up, apparently the chef had burned the bacon!!!!

I could see my longed for cuppa through the window ?
