Paying extra

We wanted to do something similar for the two excellent chaps who fitted a new kitchen and went above and beyond but they wouldn't take anything. Not allowed apparently. But I knew that one of them had just become a first time father to twin boys so I offered an envelope addressed to the twins by name and it was accepted with pleasure. I asked that the two of them used some of it to celebrate the births together.

Why not if you can afford to do it? We have with an electrician and we always feed and water anyone working here. Having said that we tried to do give our plasterer extra as he had also done other jobs without being asked. He refused it with a smile, said he was happy with his rate for the job and it gave him pleasure to help. Sadly he’s retired now, not many around like him.

My Grandsons (builders and decorators) are always very appreciative when a customer pays over the odds for a job well done.
If you like the work why not show appreciation.

Good work and workmen are hard come by and when you do have the good fortune of a job having been done to your satisfaction then it's certainly alright to give a tip. I would.
It'll be appreciated too.

I would if it was me. We had a number of workmen in over several months when we moved. We treated them well, bacon sandwiches, toast, cake , biscuits. We got the best service, some over and above what they had to do. I see no reason why you shouldn’t tip if that’s what you want to do.

Without a doubt, yes.

Yes I would. We were in exactly the same position as you. We just said 'Thank you. You have done an excellent job so we have given you a bit extra to show our appreciation '. We are having him back in a few weeks to do something else.

If you would like to do that I'm sure he'd appreciate it. It might make him think more favourably of you if you nerd other work done. You could also offer to allow him to put a photo of the work done on his website or offer to be contacted to provide a reference for his work for future potential customers.
