Hints of Autumn

I heard geese flying over last week , then this morning the first of the enormous spiders was high on the wall - he's up Henry now .

I love Autumn. As l have spent all my life being governed by school terms l always feel as if September is the real start of the year. The smells and colours of autumn are amazing and it is often still quite warm but l love the nip in the air that often comes with it. For many years l had reduced hearing due to mastoid problems. I did not know that leaves on the ground made a noise as you walk through them but a miracle operation has meant that l can experience this for myself now and l am like a five year old crunching through the leaves. There is only one problem with Autumn. September and October are usually glorious but they give way to November, which, alongside January has to be the dreariest month of the year.

I posted on the garden thread, I've already bought and planted my first spring bulbs!

That's always a sign of the year moving on.

I tend to wait until they reduce the price later on in the year, but daffs gave a poor display this spring, so I thought I'd get going early to see if they do better next spring.

I must look at my local farm shop when at the nursery tomorrow.
It's exciting to look forward to plum cobbler with custard and warming home-made soups. ??

The birds begin to sing different songs as summer comes to an end and the robins start to sing their beautiful lilting song again after being quiet for several weeks.

Yes, my Acer is changing from green to orange.

Birds getting their winter plumage. Noisy black-headed gulls no longer black.

The farm shop is stacked up with plums, marrows and parsnips and there's a distinct coolness to the early morning air.

Thanks, Gabriella. Daphne Odora is a lovely scented shrub (2). Abelias are quite pretty - especially the darker leaved ones (2). Hebes are easy and useful too (3). Probably best to cultivate (see what I did there ) a good relationship with a local small nursery and get advice from them as to what’s good to grow in your area?

Gabriella Euonymus and hebes are evergreen shrubs and come in different sizes (+ easily pruned if necessary!). There are variegated types, too. Hebes flower in Spring. Easy peasy to look after - always a bonus!

Never liked Autumn- everything is dying.
I love Spring when everything is coming alive again.

I had a wonderful 3 hour experience with owls via a Groupon gift card.
I'm tempted to say it was a hoot but that would make me a twit twoooo ?

Another simply beautiful arrangement Lisagran, far nicer than bought flowers.
I do sometimes wish I had a bigger garden but will plant the small plot with plenty of autumn colour such as dogwood.
Can you recommend any small bushes to go in half barrel tubs? Something that looks good all year round. Thank you.

I had considered putting away the summer clothes as it's been chilly this last week.(cardis in full use). But the weather man says it could be back to 27 degrees by Friday, so maybe it's not quite autumn yet.

Oh no! I'm still waiting for summer. Two very hot days in July isn't enough.

Unfortunately, the first sign of Autumn here has been three weeks of blinding rain and the forecast is for more rain!

down here in dorset it's still summer although the days are getting a little shorter. weather forecast for the week shows not a drop of rain.

Definitely an autumnal feel to the air when I walked the dogs this morning. Lovely, absolutely my favourite season. Hopefully the flies which have been a really big problem this year will disappear.

Had the first ?of the season at the weekend, me my daughter three grandchildren in screaming hysterics, two marginally braver sent to vacuum it up.

Autumn definitely on the way!

I, too, love the colours of Autumn, but where I live, I am really looking forward to Spring after a very wet and quite chilly Winter.
