Bon voyage Greta Thunberg

Aaron Banks is disgusting. I find it hard to believe anyone would wish Greta anything but a safe journey, regardless of how you view the enterprise. He says it was a joke, thought they were supposed to be funny??

So tell me GG13, what is your opinion of climate change?

I believe Greta's father will also be on the boat. Greta looks much younger than her age but acts and speaks like someone a lot older. Her confidence as a public speaker and fluency in English, which is presumably not her first language is most impressive. Sixteen year olds can vary hugely in their level of maturity and Greta, in spite of her schoolgirl appearance does seem exceptionally mature.

I haven't seen any attacks on Greta Thunberg, I have seen/read articles/posts expressing concern that this young girl is being manipulated.

The average 16 yr. old could not get a year off of school, her parents are either extremely wealthy to be able to fund her or she has wealthy backers who may/may not have an agenda and are happy to use Greta as an "acceptable face" for their message?

I sincerely hope that she is being cared for both physically and mentally, as the worldwide media likes nothing better than to put a person on a pedestal and then systematically knock them down.

I hope that her journey across the Atlantic is a safe one, and that the sea is kind to her and her fellow sailors.

I have a strong feeling there are some climate change deniers attacking GT as an easy win rather than attacking the science.

I agree, it would be going down a very dangerous path to compare her to Jesus Christ SirChenjin, turning her into a cult figure. Or like Jeanne d'Arc who reportedly had hallucinations.
I do wonder, though, if she has already become that already to many?

Suzie no, but then I don't think she just sees herself as a publicity campaign. I think, when she's urging the politicians and scientists to work together and her mother is talking about her being able to see CO2, that she believes she can make a real change, unlike the RF (with the exception of the Wokefulnesses) who recognise they are just there to cut the ribbon to the research facility. I've already said I don't think she's doing any harm and publicity for such issues is always good, but I certainly don't think she can be compared to Christ or that we should be giving thanks to God for here as has been suggested on here, and I don't think she's telling us or the experts what we/they aren't already very aware of.

There you have it in a nutshell - these arguments were raging for years. For every proposal for sustainable energy there is a valid counter argument.

At least Greta hasn't fallen into the hypocrisy trap of travelling to the US first class by air or on a private jet as so many of the climate change activists do - and will carry on doing. I expect she was offered free flights too.

There isn’t a simple solution is there lemon or else it would have been found. It’s all about risks, benefits, predictions, balances - bring realistic but having aspirations. And set against the background of the global economy and all that that implies. I just don’t like the piling up against GT that has happened on here and even worse elsewhere on social media. I’m not sure either that it’s kind or fair to accuse an idealistic young person of virtue signalling.

A Severn barrage would destroy one of the largest wetland habitats in Europe. Would it really be worth it just to make about 4% of our energy needs?

But Sir important messages bear repeating and reinforcing. Do we really expect everyone involved in a cause to come up with practical solutions? Just giving the cause publicity can be the best solution. A member of the Royal Family can open a research lab but we don’t expect them to actually do the research themselves do we and come up with the solution?

Sorry, I got interrupted there. I don't mean that just because she hasn't changed my mind she's not making a change - I mean that I don't see any meaningful, practical changes taking place as a result of her stunts and her celebrity profile. She's just one more very well meaning person talking about what we already know and what experts have been working on for years.

My point is though - is she saying or doing anything beyond publicity stunts that hasn't been said/done for years? I don't think so - she's not changed my mind about anything, nor that of anyone I know, so I'm not sure her publicity stunts are making any meaningful changes.

But publicity stunts are not about everyday reality are they? They are about getting publicity - and it’s working.

I don't think she wants to make money - I think some of the people around her do though. She's become quite the celebrity and they're cashing in on that.

As for listening to her - is she really saying anything that we don't already know? That the experts haven't been working on for years? That young people haven't been taught at school and at home? I don't think she is. Is she doing any harm? Of course not - her celebrity status, like all the other celebrities who speak out on various causes, gives her a mouthpiece by which to spread the message. Is sailing to a conference on a boat that no-one else can access a good way of showing how we can travel across the world using alternative means? No, it's a (well meaning) publicity stunt in my view.
