I make 6 inch squares for a brilliant charity - Hug in a Blanket. They see together the squares to make blankets for seriously ill or disabled children and young adults. Have a look on Facebook.

I knitted a shoulder blanket for my Aunt. She used a blanket over her knees but complained that her shoulders used to get cold.
(I didn't have a pattern but just knitted it like a 'V' pillow).

It was a huge hit amongst the residents in the care home, I ended up with a list of orders!

Do you have a local yarn bombing group? It would be fun to join them

Before making anything for prem babies call the hospital and ask what they need. I did and found they were inundated with hats but needed blankets.

I think I read somewhere about police forces wanting teddies for distressed children.

I've made several twiddle muffs for patients with dementia at our local hospital. You can use any odds and ends for a cheerful, multicoloured end product. Odd bits are also good for making twiddly tassels, etc. To be stitched on very firmly, of course, like all the twiddly bits.

Why not make a scrappy scarf? Just cast on around 250 stitches, easier with a round needle but don’t join just go backwards and forwards. Leave length of wool either end and that becomes your fringe/tassel. Can do as many colours as you want, uses up odd wool and most charities are pleased to get scarves.

Our local hospital is always grateful to receive hats for premature babies, useful if you have half balls of yarn left over.

I make cannula sleeves for dementia patients. The idea is to cover the cannula so they are less likely to pull it out but also give them safe 'twiddles'. Nurses are very grateful to receive them as is saves having to insert a new cannula and also saves the NHS money. There are strict safety rules. If anyone is interested pm me and I will point you in the right direction. The group is 'Handmade for Dementia' and the sleeves are copyrighted. They are made in brightly coloured stripes so are good for using up leftover yarn.

Twiddle muffs are a good way to use up bits and pieces. Obviously they need to be very well put together for safety. If you google "twiddle muffs" you will get other suggestions.

Some charities like simple knitted stripey baby vests, the brighter the colours the better!
