Am I the only one who finds the forums full of moans about anything and everything? Some of the moans really are unbelievably petty in my opinion.

I know we all have problems, but come on lighten up and rejoice you are still here to enjoy life.

Some of us have battled serious illnesses and know how precious life is, or lost loved ones far too soon.

Just to lighten the mood I was talking to family about laundry the other day...go on admit it how many of you have washed trousers or jeans with undies still inside, and then worn them unaware last weeks knickers are creeping down your leg grin

MissAdventure Fri 09-Aug-19 15:31:22

And if you love someone, do you give them your last petrolo?

EllanVannin Fri 09-Aug-19 13:36:42

I'm by nature a cheery/smiley individual and one of those who grit their teeth and manage a smile through pain or adversity and even make a joke of things.
I would say that my D can vouch for the fact that I've never bothered her in any way with anything as I aim never to be a trouble/worry to her in my later years, or anyone if I can help it.
Being this way makes you stronger and releases all the good endorphins that keep you reasonably fit and well.

BradfordLass72 Fri 09-Aug-19 12:39:01

"petrolo" eh? Is that a little round chocolate thing you keep to stroke occasionally? grin

BradfordLass72 Fri 09-Aug-19 12:37:20

Oldwoman70 you're right. The logical reply of course is 'And you don't have to write it!'

My regular home care lady was sick today so they sent me a substitute. She was lovely, very kind and caring, warned me about steps and kerbs, held my arm as we went into shops, read the packs and tins and prices I can no longer see.

When I offered her the petrolo money the agency suggests we give, she wouldn't take it, saying, 'You are my blessing today.'

And she was mine. Such a nice experience on a rainy day.

Loving the floral arrangements. Don't know whether to raid the garden or pop down to the supermarket now that I have been inspired!

gmarie Thu 08-Aug-19 09:25:46

Haven't found a panty in the pant leg but have washed plenty of tissues over the years and one cell phone I didn't find in son's jeans pocket! shock

Due to the bad weather forecast for the weekend Bristol Balloon Fiesta had a mass lift off this morning at 6.30. I live close enough that I was able to watch from my bedroom window (and then go back to bed!) Every year it is a wonderful sight - this year they had the Darth Vader balloon which was made in Bristol but has never flown here before.

I think that as a nation, we are still very polite, and as to what we do best, it’s forming an orderly queue ?
Not something to sneeze at, as most countries don’t seem able to do it, I remember once in Spain that when a bus arrived the mob elbowing their way aboard was a sight to behold.

lemongrove Thu 08-Aug-19 09:07:04

Lisagran ......a collection of jugs and vases, are you a WI member? Anyhoo, you are very talented with the old flower arranging, as making them look so natural is an art in itself.

Yorkshiregirl Thu 08-Aug-19 08:56:11

I agree Oldwoman70, which is my point. It is a nice thread PamelaJ1 I am merely stating a fact, and defending the people who would appreciate kind words. I did say that there are some lovely members ?

PamelaJ1 Thu 08-Aug-19 08:19:57

Thought this was supposed to be a nice thread?

Oldwoman70 Thu 08-Aug-19 08:13:40

Whenever someone mentions anything about the nasty comments someone will say "you don't have to read it". That doesn't take into account you may be reading an interesting discussion and suddenly it will turn unpleasant.

morethan2 Thu 08-Aug-19 08:08:17

It’s not all bad BradfordLass when abroad I've been told that us British have a reputation of being very polite.

Yorkshiregirl Thu 08-Aug-19 08:05:24

Ah Bradfordlass72 as one Bradford lass to another (we have spoken before) I always love your down to earth common sense replies.
Yes I agree re stereotype nasty old grumps and the British moaners. A few of my posts have been shot down in flames, but thankfully I don't solely rely on the opions of Gransnet members, however some people do and are reaching out for help and understanding.
Poor souls do not always get a kind word, which is cruel. The nastiness then makes others reluctant to post anything.
I have to add there are some genuinely nice members. My advice would be post away and ignore the critics they can't help themselves ?

Sara65 Thu 08-Aug-19 08:01:50

Bradfordlass

You among others always have good down to earth advice, others make me laugh, and others have made me very sad with their heartbreaking lives.

But I’ve had enough of the nastiness, unkindness and assumed superiority of some members, so I’m having a break.

maybe see you all some time

BradfordLass72 Thu 08-Aug-19 07:55:36

DUVETS:

Keep a length of ribbon handy and tie it round the open end of the duvet before washing it. That way, you don't have to fiddle with buttons but nothing can get into it.

BradfordLass72 Thu 08-Aug-19 07:46:44

If I leave a tissue in a pocket, I let the garment dry then take it outside and whip-shake it as many times as I can. Most of the tissue flies off and a bit of Sellotape or a damp cloth deals to the rest.

BradfordLass72 Thu 08-Aug-19 07:43:49

What most saddens me, Yorkshiregirl is that the chronic moaners make the stereotype of the nasty older woman true. sad

It's also a racial stereotype. The moaning, whingeing Brit is well known and despised almost everywhere you go. I hate to think my country and its people have this reputation.

And I'm NOT talking about those with genuine problems who come for help, they are welcome and it's good to see so many of us trying to advise.

Wouldn't it be nice if people said the British were a contented, happy lot?

Mapleleaf Thu 08-Aug-19 07:32:55

I’ve stopped contributing to some threads because they seem to degenerate into nastiness and one-upmanship. Some can start off reasonable enough, but then... Well, it’s better to steer clear if possible.
Regarding the tissues in the wash, oh yes! Infuriating, isn’t it, especially when I think I’ve already checked everything. ?
I’ve also recently tried washing my hair with conditioner (the two bottles are very similar). I wondered why it wasn’t lathering up properly!!

Lisagran Thu 08-Aug-19 06:59:54

your jugs are worth a second look - grin

You may keep me in a cupboard lemongrove - happy to arrange flowers for you when required. It will need to be a big cupboard, I have a large collection of jugs smile

MissAdventure Wed 07-Aug-19 22:38:59

smile

lemongrove Wed 07-Aug-19 22:38:01

My pleasure Lisagran may I keep you in a cupboard for when I need a bouquet arranged ? and I have to say, that as well as the blooms, your jugs are worth a second look ( if you’ll pardon the expression) .....I just use a vase, but thinking about it there may be a jug tucked away I could use.?

MissAdventure Wed 07-Aug-19 22:32:22

grin morethan.
Life's a mixture of both; happy and sad, so a good moan is exactly what's needed sometimes.

I love it when threads get silly; it gives me a real lift.

morethan2 Wed 07-Aug-19 22:23:10

I was a young new mum going for my post natal checkup with a very old brusque army doctor. He sent me behind a curtain to get undressed and barked out questions while I was undressing one went like this
“Sex”
I answered “not yet”
He replied “I meant the sex of the child”
blush
I’ve had a horrible 7 days but hope I can still occasionally see the bright side of life. Ps I enjoy a little moan though. I’m sure most gransnetters are up for the occasional giggle.

Lisagran Wed 07-Aug-19 22:16:55

Thanks Lemongrove smile
