Avoiding ironing

Never iron; waste of time as everything goes back to being crumpled when you wear it. Good shake after washing, very careful pegging out and it's all ready to be put back on. I'd rather go for a long walk or have a good read than waste time conforming to what in my opinion are outmoded societal demands haha. I did iron once when a wedding outfit didn't enjoy its journey round the world, but then it was someone else's iron in their house and it didn't seem so onerous.

I follow most of the tips mentioned above but I don’t iron that much unless I’ve been careless and left dry stuff in a heap in the laundry basket. If you’re really averse to ironing go down the non iron fabric route and eliminate stuff that needs ironing, over time you should find ironing becomes a distant memory!

It's 32 degrees here in SE Essex, and I have just given in to temptation and rang the local ironing service, all will be delivered back here in 24hours".............and I do not feel at all guilty!!

In winter when the radiators are on I like to carefully fold lengthways my cotton trousers and smooth them over the top of the radiator, lengthways.

I don't mind ironing. I do it upstairs looking out over garden.
I always use fabric conditioner as it makes clothes softer & smells nice. I use Method & also their matching laundry liquid. It is ecologically friendly apparently.

I wear a lot of cotton, wool and linen, don't really like manmade fibres. My cotton and linen tops and skirts always need an iron to make them look pristine. How do you all manage to peg laundry out on a line and not get left with any sort of peg marks? I've tried every style of peg I can find and even the cushioned ones still leave a mark. OH irons his own stuff and our bedlinen. And he irons my nightwear and knickers, both of which fold and store more easily once ironed. I enjoy the results of ironed clothes so for me it isn't a waste of time. Don't have a tumble dryer, do use a small measure of fabric conditioner, but never on towels, it reduces their absorbency.

Am I the only one who quite like ironing? It’s only me so not a lot. I couldn’t sleep on a wrinkled pillow case and would never go out in unironed clothes but that’s just me. Both daughters have cleaner who also do their ironing. If they want something ironed in an emergency between cleaning days I do it. It gets me a lot of kudos!

Do people hang damp clothes straight onto a hanger?

I rarely iron anything these days, no men's shirts and my own stuff, mostly cotton is shaken and hung up and smoothed and folded.
I never use conditioner either, a washing machine engineer told me it clogs the machine with slime which then smells and I remember wondering why freshly washed laundry smelt stale. Since I stopped using it the problem went away.

I actually quite enjoy ironing but not on a very warm day like today.

I decided to Spend the Kids Inheritance on a lovely lady who has a company called Crease Relief. She does shirts for DH and duvet covers and flat sheets. I quite like ironing pillowcases ,table napkins and handkerchiefs as I sit down and have time to think. Also I don't feel guilty just getting the ironing board out for pressing my patchwork .

This post interests me greatly as I am an ironer. Don't mind it a bit as I watch tv and everything's done in no time. However, I was recently one degree under and decided I couldn't face doing the duvet cover. Put it on the bed but - ugh - couldn't handle the appearance or the lack of pristine feel. Didn't realise it was THAT important to me. My quality life is enhanced by ironing and certainly not diminished in any way. I'm grateful to read that the reduction in spin speed can reduce creasing. Thanks to contributor. I'll give that a go.

I stopped ironing when I returned to full-time employment. DC and H were told to do their own. This still works for us. I do iron linen dress and my husband barters jobs if he wants his dress shirt ironed.

I never use fabric conditioner or a Tumbl e dryer. I get as much as possible carefully pegged on the outside lines, hopefully in the wind. Most things then don't need ironing. I never iron T-shirts or jeans. I do iron pillowcases, topside of duvet covers, but only the gite ones. Cotton and linen shirts, dressed and skirts get ironed. But as we live mainly in Tshirts, jeans and swimmers this doesn't amount to much!

Just iron for goodness sake. Do a few items at a time and the pile will disappear before you know it! Listen to music or watch tv while you do it

Fabric conditioner is not good for the clothes fibres, causes a sticky residue which traps bacteria.
Wash & line dry, fold or hang. I iron rarely & don't own a dryer.

get a hand steamer....much easier......or like me let clothes nearly dry ,then hang up on hanger in bathroom. hey presto no creases....

I haven't really ironed since my daughter was at school - when I had to iron all those school shirts , PE shirts, trousers etc, I hate ironing with a passion and very seldom get the iron out. I wash almost all clothing on a cool wash with a decent washing liquid and fabric conditioner, if the smell of fabric conditioner is too much then there are fragrance free conditioners on the market. I get things straight out on the line, hang it up as soon as it is dry. I've never ironed knickers, bedding, towels etc, though I did have a friend who literally ironed everything, including bras , dishcloths etc put me off even more that did!

I used to iron, back in the day. Usually to the Eastenders omnibus on a Sunday afternoon. Never bedding or underwear. My standards must have slipped even more since because I’m not even sure where our iron is. I just hang stuff up as soon as it’s dry, but also subscribe to the theory that creases will drop out anyway. DH does iron occasionally, but only “proper” shirts etc.

I’m pleased to say I’ve never had a gynae infection.

Fabric softener definitely helps reduce creases.

Buy clothes which do not need ironing.

Get things out as soon as they have spun, shake out the creases and hang them up straightaway.

I have invented a thing called 'Lazyiron' whereby I never iron properly by the book but think about every garment and what I can get away with so that they look ironed but take 30 seconds. All T shirts get ironed on the front and flat. Ditto dresses. I have cut shirts down from four to three minutes by thinking it through and going quickly. Corners are cut but still the clothes look ironed. I listen to Radio Four Extra dramas as I iron too so it's a pleasure.

My much hated job . I hang clothes straight off the line. However there is some that needed ironing found a lovely lady where I live and charges £12 for a basket and will hang or fold....use her when i need to.
