Oops I think I may have posted this before , but here I am again sitting by someone who has first eaten very smelly cold meat and is now onto loudly crunching crisps . Think there is such a thing as being phobic about eating noises!!

It'd be a pretty boring site though if we were only allowed to talk about things we'd experienced personally, wouldn't it? confused

I didn't catch Gabriella's post, so can't comment on its content, but there doesn't seem to be an outpouring of outrage following the empty space it once occupied. If people are offended they usually make it very clear on the thread, so I'm a bit confused.

There are always going to be people who take offence and I studiously avoid having those types in my circles of friends.
I wonder how many people on GN give advice or pontificate on subjects of which they have no personal experience...just relating the experiences of a relative or a friend of a friend. wink
I reckon 80%.

So now no tuna and no egg, no fish and chips, no macDs,no Chinese what is the matter with everyone, buy some ear muffs and a mask over ya noses
I saw a programme where a litter man was having to collect horrible stuff including human waste, his answer was to wear his mask heavily sprayed with Lynx ???

Overthehills, I made no comment on Iam’s post but on ’GG’s offensive and sweeping racist judgement of the travellers on Indian trains, their lack of hygiene and practices by the side of the tracks.
That comment was deleted so I can’t quote it verbatim

MawBroon ?
I thought Iam’s journey in India sounded great.
It has never, in all my sixty-five years, occurred to me to be offended by someone eating on public transport - have I ever even noticed? I think I must have led a very sheltered life!

MawBroonsback Fri 19-Jul-19 20:43:33

Still no substitute for personal experience GabriellaG especially when making sweeping and potentially offensive judgements.
Sadly it happens all too often, somebody knows somebody who has read something somewhere, or seen on TV etc etc etc. When one does know about a particular topic it is too often brought home to one how imperfect selected shots or extracts can be. Even Michael Palin and David Attenborough are not above tweaking what they show us,
You must have heard the old adage even if you are not familiar with Evelyn Waugh’s “Scoop”
“Never let the facts get in the way of a good story”

I’m ok about people eating on long train journeys but, please, no tuna sandwiches I cannot bear the smell.

I was once on a Scotrail train which had no tables but had long bench seats. A mum and 2 young children got on and sat opposite me. She then produced a Chinese carry out and set all the containers out along the seat so they could all help themselves as if they were sat at a table. It was all a bit strange and anti social especially as it was a local service and not a long journey. However, as I love Chinese food it actually made my mouth water and I would gladly have joined in but sadly I wasn’t invited!

I have sat next to a lady at the theatre who was eating a hamburger and chips, and drinking coke. Whatever happened to going to the theatre to watch the play?

GabriellaG54 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:45:07

The personal experiences were those of professional travellers who wrote about them.
Blame them.

GabriellaG54 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:41:27

My interpretation was not at fault.
I know what I read and know what I viewed in the programmes .
I have the books on my bookshelves.
You might possibly try blaming the travel writers and programme makers as their programme and book editors must fall short of your standards Mawbroonsback

GabriellaG54 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:35:19

Newatthis
You leave them in your mouth for saliva to soften them...then chew. grin

GabriellaG54 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:29:21

Correct Mawbroonsback
That is why I said it was offered before our descent.

GabriellaG54 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:28:12

Iam64
Nor me with you grin

MawBroonsback Fri 19-Jul-19 18:26:12

I thought the boiled sweet thingy was to ease the pressure on the ears?

GabriellaG54 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:24:29

Even on a 40 minute flight from Liverpool to Ronaldsway Airport on the Isle of Man I was offered a sandwich, a drink plus a stripey mint sweet before the descent.

MawBroonsback Fri 19-Jul-19 18:24:26

Perhaps it was your interpretation which was at fault.
There is no substitute for personal experience is there?

GabriellaG54 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:19:57

Apologies to anyone who was offended by my post ( now deleted by GNHQ)
To be clear, Neither I nor any family member have ever been to India and my post was informed by reading books and watching travelogues written and made by professional travel writers such as Michael Palin.
If the incidents I mentioned are untrue, then the content I read and viewed must have been untrue.
Obviously, I was misled.

Noreen3 Fri 19-Jul-19 18:18:22

there are times when you need to eat on a train or a long bus journey,I don't mind if people are considerate, but not really smelly monster munch onion crisps or something like that. Also, people should tidy up after themselves.I sat near 2 smartly dressed women drinking Costa coffee on a bus. When we reached the last stop I noticed they had left the cups on the floor, one had spilled, so there was coffee running down the bus.If they hadn't already gone I would have been tempted to tell them they'd left something.

SynchroSwimmer Fri 19-Jul-19 17:04:01

Facebook page - misophonia....recommend having a look ?

MissAdventure Fri 19-Jul-19 16:54:35

Even on a flight from London to Glasgow I used to manage to eat a sandwich and some crisps, washed down with coffee.
1 hour 10 mins! blush

MawBroonsback Fri 19-Jul-19 16:36:22

Easy newatthis dunk them in your coffee ??

Seiko70 Fri 19-Jul-19 16:34:29

?

Seiko70 Fri 19-Jul-19 16:33:46

You Echo my thoughts too, I couldnt travel hours on a train and not eat or drink I would be fainting , some of us do undertake journeys that take nearly all day.

Newatthis Fri 19-Jul-19 15:33:21

Can someone please give me a lesson on how to eat crisps quietly?

MissAdventure Fri 19-Jul-19 15:26:43

I'm outraged!
I was refused entry on a bus for having my wrapped up chips in a shopping bag.
I told the driver I wasn't going to eat them, and he said I might be "just saying that!"
