A friend has just sent this to me. Substitute a few names and it could be any of us.
This is for you ladies!!!

Lunch With Girlfriends
By Kathy O’Malley

Elaine’s vertigo has never been worse
Kay can’t recall where she left her purse
Rhonda’s about to replace her knees
Linda’s breathing is tinged with a wheeze

Donna's left boob has a troublesome lump
Diane’s on her third trip to take a dump
Lorraine’s husband can’t remember a thing
Nine years a widow, Marge still wears her ring

Marlene is dealing with another UTI
Sally’s giving a hearing aid another try
Marie has decided she can’t drive at night
Sharon still wears clothes two sizes too tight

They’ve been through divorces and babies and wakes
They do for each other whatever it takes
They’ve already buried Marcia and Kate
And truthfully, Lizzie’s not looking so great

So whenever they can, they get out to eat
Open bottles of wine and forget their sore feet
There’s laughing and crying and letting down guards
And when the bill comes, there’s ten credit cards

So here’s to the waiters who keep orders straight
And to the places that let lunches run three hours late
And here’s to the girlfriends, those near and those far
Here's to the girlfriends, you know who you are!!!

The poem is funny but I agree that it's a bit sad too. Bitter sweet. Ladies growing old together but still meeting up and supporting each other. I'd like to think we do all do that.

Beautiful poem and thank you Gonegirl. The information about the author is insightful. I like to read about authors and their work.

Thank you Maw! I am doing that very thing today - in fact I'm just about to leave for lunch with my oldest friend, a teaching colleague from nearly 50 years ago. We met teaching at the same school, have always lived within half a mile of each other since then; she and her DH were godparents to DS. Our DHs got on very well and we socialised frequently. We have both lost our DHs now, so we know how each other feels.
I think it may be a boozy lunch - first one there gets the prosecco! Last time we met at one, and left at four! Luckily the pub is within walking distance...

Thank you Maw for posting that. It's very true for many of us who lunch with groups of friends.

Does that make you sad gillybob or not particularly?

I know you have a close, loving family which, looking at some of the threads on GN, not everyone has. Plus you do a lot for them all and are super busy.

I loved the poem Maw but can’t really relate to it in my own life as I don’t have any “real life” friends to meet up with .

Loved the poem - really rang true!

Urmstongran Tue 09-Jul-19 11:13:15

Actually EV you’re right about confiding in friends too. It helps and shows we care. Life isn’t all bubblegum and candy floss. It’s good in a group of friends to be able to open up. It helps to have support - through difficult times as well as good.

Our LWW have got to know one another really well by now. We know of their families and worries. We’ve very occasionally shed some tears and given hugs. It’s a special friendship group that we all value and look forward to.

We joke (but mean it) when we say what gets said at LWW stays in LWW. We all appreciate kindness when we’re feeling vulnerable or anxious.

Lovely words. So true. X

This made me rather sad too.
Three ladies who used to lunch have died too young, two others can't get out much now so we took lunch with us to one's house, where I sat whilst she and another discussed their ailments.
At least there's GN smile

Ellianne, I'm the same as you as regards friends. The 4 of mine are younger----by just a few years so it's just a quick " how are we all " before continuing our conversations so you don't really have chance or the inclination to talk about the down-sides that life in general can bring. However I'm going to copy this by way of a conversation piece to see if it strikes a chord.

Sadly I've lost my other long-term friends with whom we discussed various illnesses/ailments and mishaps, laughingly I might add which helped a lot.

I love Tara Road Urmstongran.
A good chuckle Maw

I love our little group of 'Netters, we've even booked a 2-night break away. We always cause chaos with our laughing and stories party

Oops! Forgot the photo.

Thinking on that verse Maw it reminds me of the gentle style of the late Maeve Binchy. I used to love her books. Tara Road was my favourite I recall.

And this I bought years ago is wonderful and along the same humour!

Jane10 Tue 09-Jul-19 10:40:53

Excellent. Just love the mental picture it conjures up. I recognise it all!

Ellianne Tue 09-Jul-19 10:37:13

That made me laugh. The ladies I lunch with seem quite healthy, but maybe it's just that all aches and worries are put to one side when you're in good company.

moobox Tue 09-Jul-19 10:30:06

we have a group of 5 who lunch and cinema. We sit amongst tables of oldies and feel we are not one of them - we are of course!

goldengirl Tue 09-Jul-19 10:16:03

Having been to a get together last week, I can go along with that poem. It's great!

Urmstongran Tue 09-Jul-19 10:04:25

Thanks Maw I love this! I’m going to share it with my ladies group in Malaga. I started a group just over 4y ago when I retired of ladies out there (3 ex pats and some like me who hop between here and there) and we meet in a local bar for wine & tapas.

We call our group LWW (ladies who wine) as the original joke was, with meeting up every week, we couldn’t afford to be Ladies Who Lunch!

The group might be 4 of us one week and anything up to 10 as sometimes regular members will bring a friend who is on their holiday. Gosh, we have some laughs and over the years we now have developed a real sense of friendship and caring.

Lovely and also fitting. Made me a little sad!

Blinko Tue 09-Jul-19 09:54:09

I've just copied it to my own group of ladies who lunch. I love it!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 09-Jul-19 09:53:33

What a fabulous piece of writing

tanith Tue 09-Jul-19 09:51:14

How true ?
