My Birthday and I don't like any fuss.

It's my birthday today. and I just hate celebrating it. I have had texts and cards and been for a lovely walk with my husband and dog. I walk most days and am happy just having a normal day. Am I being miserable or does anyone else feel like this on their special day?

Yep, same here!!! I hate my birthdays! At my age I feel its a time for commiseration of my lost youth, certainly not something to be celebrated. (But that is just my personal preference)
I do participate in others birthdays and always send cards and gifts, unless the person is a miserable old sod like me, then I respect their wishes!!

flowers Wishing you a lovely day x

My birthday day is on Boxing Day ?. I always have the family round and even though it’s busy I wouldn’t have it any other way, mind if they wrap any presents in Christmas paper they know there will be trouble ?

Tillybelle Mon 01-Jul-19 11:00:53

Quizzer. My late husband gave me a set of jump leads for my car. It was probably the most expensive present he bought me.

So many people agree! I too, am happy to join in other peoples celebrations but I hate being the centre of attention. Always did birthdays for the children and my husband loved a birthday treat. I dont really enjoy Christmas or wedding anniversaries either. The pressure to enjoy feels too great. Glad I am not alone.

It was mine last week. I know what you mean. Mind you next year will have a 0 at the end which will be depressing. I've already told family I do not want a big do but they think I will change my mind. I won't!!

It’s my birthday today and I actually love celebrating it ! However my husband hates any celebrating what so ever ? birthdays Christmas weddings etc, I feel it’s my duty to extra celebrate. Do what makes you happy it’s only another day x

thankyou tillybelle?
Tell your hubby you need a new car to go with those jump leads!

Sorry tillybelle, didn't read your post properly blushxx

Happy birthday to everyone who is celebrating today. None of my family is really into big birthday bashes. I will be 80 on 29th, and we are just going out for a meal together. They know that if they organise a surprise party I will kill them. Likewise if they buy me expensive gifts of things I don’t need or want. It’s enough for me that they spend time with me, and give me assistance when I need it. Not just on my birthday, but all through the year.
I am fortunate in having a caring family who all get along with each other, including the in-laws, and give unconditional support when it is needed. That’s worth more to me than any fancy birthday celebrations!

I love as much fuss, food, drink, cards, presents and special day out as possible! I will be 70 in October and so far have clocked up three parties!

One with the family in England, another in England that a friend is hosting and the third back here in France with OH. The latter may coincide with getting married here so will combine it with our vin d'honneur. Am considering a hen party or two. Am I being attention seeking?

I prefer what my late husband called “unbirthdays”. On my 90tth my son arranged a dinner at a hotel inviting all my relatives and neighbours. I hated being the centre of attention although it was good to see my grandsons for the first time for years.

Pat1949 Mon 01-Jul-19 11:19:33

Me too. I just don’t like a fuss. I like cards, but never get offended or upset if anyone forgets. I’m not keen on weddings either or any other celebration come to that, I guess that puts me in the miserable old sod category. ??

Here's a picture of me on one of my birthdays grin
Blimey! Was that your 85th? grin Is that a railway line you were about to lie prostrate across? Good job Kiwi trains are not very frequent, but before you do, try a few of those "North of Nowhere" stubbies; an excellent brew for birthdays or whatever the occasion. hmm

Yes I feel the same optimist hate being the centre of attention. It’s nothing to do with adding extra 0’s, so many people would love to reach my age, 70. A lot of my friends passed away quite young, so I’ve never regretted getting older. It’s just the fuss.

My husband is exactly the same and we usually plan to be away on holiday for his birthday. He loves waking up in a different place and just celebrating it quietly with me - a trip out to somewhere different during the day, and then a special meal in the evening.

CarlyD7 Mon 01-Jul-19 11:33:13

Just wanted to mention - when a special friend celebrated her 90th birthday she had an Open Weekend where she invited friends and family (some of whom live abroad) to visit her. She made sure that she had lots of snack foods, drinks and so on available, and she had a lovely time spread over 2 days, with no "big" event (which suited her just fine). She said that she was able to talk to lots of people individually rather than feeling completely overwhelmed and missing the chance to talk to those she didn't see very often.

Theoddbird Mon 01-Jul-19 11:40:22

Don't celebrate it then. Don't acknowledge texts etc. Just delete them. I usually go away for 2 or 3 days and spend mine on my own.

paddyann Mon 01-Jul-19 11:47:23

I haven't really celebrated my birthday since my Dad died just before my 40th.I always tell the kids not to buy presents and I'm happy with homemade cards from the wee ones .My daughter and son sneakily invited us to my GD's 12th birthday at a local restaurant ,her birthday is 2 days before mine .The cake was half and half each and there were presents they had all got together and painted miniature portraits of themselves and had them mounted together and framed.I cried .It meant so much more than expensive things I didn't need or really want .They have been warned though that this is a one off and no party next year

Gingergirl Mon 01-Jul-19 11:59:30

I also don’t like celebrating. I think there are different reasons for this. If you didn’t have positive experiences of it as a child, in some context, it can, even subconsciously, affect things in adulthood. Or, some people worry about ageing. Or, some people don’t want to be the centre of attention and just prefer a more ordinary, low key day. I think I’m all of those!?But Anyway, its your day and whatever you do, is absolutely your decision...and that’s what makes it special. Happy Birthday!?

Another Cancerian here, so not long to go! All of our birthdays fall within three weeks of each other so we go out for a meal sometime around then. I’m with NanKate though and like to see my DD and DGD who will bring me some goodies and a balloon.
I’m looking forward to next year already as I will get my delayed pension ...!

JanaNana Mon 01-Jul-19 12:01:32

Happy Birthday for yesterday, just enjoy doing it your way. I'm a Cancerian too and don't like all the fuss either.

Stella14 Mon 01-Jul-19 12:11:16

Happy birthday Grannybags. I feel the same way. I wonder if it comes from there being not much fuss on my childhood birthdays. Anyway, I’m 60 in a couple of weeks. I don’t want to be 60 LOL! I don’t want any fuss, so hubby and I are just going out for the day alone, to Holy Island if the weather is decent.

Stella14 Mon 01-Jul-19 12:13:39

Hope you have a lovely day, that is perfect for you JonesKpj000 flowers
