What did you hate as a child?

While watching Glastonbury ( briefly!) yesterday, I happened to spot a Punch n’ Judy kiosk directly behind the interviewers and it instantly reminded me how much I hated the whole Punch n’ Judy thing as a child. Just awful, made me feel really ill at ease then, and now! Also hated the rhymes below pictures of Rupert the Bear in those blasted annuals Santa brought every single year! What did you hate as a child?

Communal showers at grammar school were torture for a reserved only child with prudish parents. I used to think of every excuse possible to avoid them and any form of P.E.

My mother did Punch and Judy shows on the beach in Devon - which has left me with an extreme loathing of puppets in any form at all!

Tepid school milk, punch & Judy, the circus, my bedroom wallpaper - it gave me nightmares but I never told my parents until it was redecorated!

Not having any siblings or even cousins. Even worse now as a widow for almost 11 years.
Sundays -Church and Sunday School .No shopping. No papers. No playing out .Hated them.

I hated Punch and Judy too, never could see what was funny about Punch hitting Judy and the baby and being hanged at the end.

Brussels sprouts - I was forced to eat them whenever we had them until I was fourteen.

Being forced to say I was sorry when I had been given a row when I was very small. I was usually still angry with Mummy and not sorry at all!

Being told to thank my parents for the year that had passed at bedtime of the day before my birthday and again at the New Year. Both Danish customs that no-one in Scotland had ever heard of.

In common with most posters, warm school milk. Never drunk milk again since.
I had a phobia about pilchards all school on alternate Fridays (all those bones) but happily eat fresh sardines and kippers now.
Lumpy mash and school cabbage. Love all vegetables now.
Mother cooking roast pork for Sunday lunch. Smell would turn my stomach and have never cooked roast pork.

Johno. You would have gone crazy living with my mother. She made the assumption that I had "been up to something" whenever she saw mw. I didn't actually know what she meant when she said it at first. I felt much better when I read Viscount Montgomery of Alamein's autobiography. On the first pages he tells how his mother used to say to the staff or his brother, "Go and find Bernard and see what he is doing and tell him to stop it."

SandraF. Yes! Again the bullies came forth: There were two girls always together and they would say such cruel things. It's hard to understand how they could have such a big effect really, just two of them.

Forgot to say I hate potatoes, never eat them, even chips. At school dinners one day I was not allowed to leave the table until I had ate my then cold mashed potatoes. I ate them and then was promptly sick and received a telling off for that. My dad was so angry and went up to the school and told the headteacher that if my xxxxx says she doesn't eat something, then she doesn't. It never happened again.

My Nan making me sleep with rags in my hair (they never worked curl would drop out in 20mins )

Like many people here I hated school dinners. I also dreaded travelling as my DM was not sympathetic about my travel sickness.
I hated my DM perming my hair. She used to say you had to suffer to be beautiful but I didn't like the process and didn't like my hair curly and looking at the photo I have of me at 11 or 12 with a perm, it was just a frizzy mess.

I hated broad beans and processed peas due to their hard skins; also the skin on rice pudding or custard. Milk of Magnesia made me gag and I hated the smell of Friar's Balsam, in a glass of hot water for a cough. My parents were pretty understanding and never made me eat anything I really didn't like. They did get angry when they found out I hadn't swallowed my vile tasting penicillin tablets but had dropped them down the back of the bed when I had tonsillitis!
I was scared of the Daleks and flying Daddy Longlegs. I still have to leave the room if the latter flies in.
I always enjoyed my school milk and loved my Rupert Bear annual.

Spiders - my first memory is waking up to find a huge one on my pillow. I was terrified of them until I had my own children, and was determined not to pass my fear onto them, so went to an open day at our local vet with my daughter and we both held a tarantula!
Smoking - I hated the fact that my parents smoked and still detest smoking almost to the point of phobia.
Sunday School - although my father was an agnostic and refused to have me baptised, he did allow my granny to take me to Sunday School each week. I loathed it and couldn't understand why I wasn't allowed to question anything and had to "believe". Even as a child, my logical brain couldn't entertain the fantasy of religion...
Cruelty to animals - I even refused to go to circuses as I knew, deep down, that it was wrong to make animals do those kind of things. I once spoke up when I saw a woman hitting her dog - well, she only went and told my mum, and I got hell from her for daring to speak to an adult like that (that still smarts, even to this day!).

A film called pennies from Heaven in which a little girl ended up in an iron lung. I was so afraid it would happen to me. I still cant stand the thought of being shut in anywhere.
Also films about the war. .
My dad would watch them on a Sunday afternoon. Made me feel sick and anxious.

The Circus - mum was going to treat us one holiday, but we didn’t want to go! ( I was about 10 I think ) She was most put out!

NotSpaghetti Mon 01-Jul-19 16:45:21

Oh yes, Conker - I remember wriggling and repeatedly saying "please don't wash me with spit, Nana"
sad

Jelly hated the texture it made me heave, I had free dinners at school and remember being the last child in the hall as they wouldn't let me leave until I had finished. I remember my tears falling into the plate of jelly I knew if I tried to eat it I would be sick, luckily one of the kinder dinner ladies took pity on me and took the plate away.

School....I hated it from the time I started until the day I left. College I loved,

WOODMOUSE49 Mon 01-Jul-19 18:02:09

Pearl Barley. Mum made a stew once a week with it in. sad

Iron tonic after an illness. It even turned the spoon black. Whenever I could I tipped it down the sink.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 01-Jul-19 18:10:50

Ear ache before antibiotics were freely @available. Oh the pain!!

HannahLoisLuke Mon 01-Jul-19 18:21:57

Reading through these posts I feel so sad at how so many of us were subjected to cruelty and abuse.
My mum had a lot to deal with and could be horribly cruel too if we made her angry. I remember having my face scrubbed with a piece of very crunchy fried bread and then sent to school stinking if dripping, all because I'd tucked a baggy cardigan around me to try and look less like a sack.
I also had a very creepy uncle who tried to kiss us in a very inappropriate way. We'd run and hide if we spied him coming.
On the other hand I loved school milk, and milk from our cows. Loved milk pudding except sago. Loved the skin on top.
Really, we must have been tough, no counciling or letting it spoil our lives. We just got on with life and waited to grow up and hopefully escape.

I used to hate when I had holes in my shoes and my mum couldn't afford new ones. She would cut a shoe shape from a cornflake box and put it in my shoe. If it rained I had soggy feet all day.

Omg I'd forgot about Scott's emulsion. Bork lol
