While watching Glastonbury ( briefly!) yesterday, I happened to spot a Punch n’ Judy kiosk directly behind the interviewers and it instantly reminded me how much I hated the whole Punch n’ Judy thing as a child. Just awful, made me feel really ill at ease then, and now! Also hated the rhymes below pictures of Rupert the Bear in those blasted annuals Santa brought every single year! What did you hate as a child?
I hated mashed potatoes! My mum would always take out some potatoes for me before she mashed them but my grandmother made me eat them and I was sick afterwards. Now, as an adult, I love mashed potatoes.
The smell of rabbit stew cooking, I always had to go to a friend's house for tea when my mum was doing this for tea
Agree on carnival characters, clowns and Punch and Judy - still make me shudder.
Anyone remember the children’s TV Programme “The Singing Ringing Tree”? Translated from Russian I think and had really creepy characters.
Also hated gloopy Cod Liver Oil and Malt - a spoonful every day. Makes me nauseous to think of it.
I also hated school, especially school dinners, boiled mutton, milk puddings with skin on top and being made to sit in the dining hall until I ate it or lunch time finished. Also hated school sports lessons and the sound and smell of indoor swimming pools. I used to hide in the changing room during swimming lessons.
I was quiet and shy and generally got bullied.
Spiders.
Having to sleep with my blind granny when sent to stay during summer holidays.
Even now the sight of ladybird books makes me wretch, dyslexia wasn’t recognised at that time and I was frequently punished for not being able to read or spell.
But I did like cod liver oil and malt
Itchy woollen underwear! 'But it's such lovely quality and so durable!' my mother said. 'It can't possibly be itchy....'
Being stuck inside a car with all windows closed while my parents smoked incessantly, on their excursions on my father's afternoon off. 'You can't possibly be feeling sick....'
Like others - being tickled, sometimes hard, without permission; milk puddings with skin on; disgusting warm school milk.
In many ways I have much to be grateful for but I think that children's views are taken into account these days and that's a big improvement.
Same as you GinJeannie. Punch and Judy. Most unsuitable for children! I don't understand what makes people keep it going! Put it in the museum!
Also walking home from school with my older half sister and her friends who would keep saying what was wrong with me. "Look at Elle's horrible straight hair it sticks out at the top". "Elle has funny knees they have a bump on the sides." "Elle has a small head it means she is thick." etc.
The laughing policeman in a kiosk ( Blackpool front)which people were always putting a penny in to hear the awful song.....shudder!
Custard at school, cooked tomato skins, snakes and anything lizardy, Val Doonican, being asked by my Mum to go and buy ice cream from the shop round the corner because there were some boys there who used to tease me and my maiden surname (again because I used to be teased about it). I still hate all these things except going to buy the ice cream because, obviously, that doesn't happen any more.
Playing hockey on freezing cold days. Didn’t have a playing field attached to the school and had to walk a mile to one.
My sister because she bullied me and broke my toys and was my Mums favourite.
I would eat almost anything except: broad beans, offal of any kind and semolina pudding (!) Sadly, all of these appeared regularly in school dinners ...
Malt - my mother use to give us a spoonful everyday. Not sure what for but it tasted vile.
Meat! My parents were farmers so I was used to the animals going for slaughter, but when at age four my favourite pig was sent off on the lorry I was beside myself.
I haven't touched it since and believe me that was some struggle with teachers, grandparents, everyone except my dear mum back in the late 40s. It wasn't considered normal!
No veggie recipes then. I had the two veg with a piece of cheese.
I do eat fish now, and gave always eaten eggs and dairy.
Rosehip syrup, milk of magnesia, travel sickness and all th associated remedies, Brussel sprouts, semolina and rice pudding, liver, prunes - still can't beat to be near them.
School - made to stay until I was nearly 19. Hockey. Billy Cotton. Jimmy Saville.
Spiders
Stewed apples!
Namsnanny. I too detest Steptoe and Son, to this day. I just do not see how two people being so cruel to each other and having such vicious rows can possibly be seen as funny! We did not have a TV, so I can't add it as one from my childhood although I saw it at other people's houses sometimes. I cannot watch any rows on TV serious or "comedy", I start to shake and my stomach clenches.
I didn't want to "get heavy" but unfortunately when asked this question I immediately remember bad things like being bullied and my mother shouting and my poor dad looking terribly upset and going up the garden... I understand Bradfordlass always feeling as if she is about to be told off as well. I had that as a child and during my marriage.
Our school milk too was defrosted on the big central heating pipes. I was intolerant of milk so used to be sick. One Teacher who's name actually contained the word "hate' said I was being sick on purpose. I was 6.
Oh yes - I hated the reading scheme - I think it was Dick and Dora! I just thought it was so boring! The children were so stupid and always nice and clean.
I hated the smell if diesel on the bus and the smoke from people smoking. I would get travel sick.
We were given cod liver oil - that made me retch!
I can remember the magical things I liked as a child too! Autumn leaves - the Chestnut trees.. Most of my memories come from nature and some are so precious I still keep them to myself. I think when things are hard, as a child you learn how to make the best of it and protect yourself.
It reminds me of "Innisfree". "I shall have some peace there," for "I hear it in the deep heart’s core" or like Wordsworth in Daffodils in the last stanza, when he has said how as he looked upon the daffodils little did he realise how much life-long pleasure they would provide. For me too, I often go back to times in the countryside, when I was with my pets and nature but otherwise alone. As Wordsworth says:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
I also thoroughly disliked Punch n Judy. Just not at all correct.
Also the old woman that ate a spider made me cringe
I didn't hate anything mentioned. Without getting heavy as Tilly says, I hated my father and the life us children had.
Can I add getting my hair cut, to my ever growing list of things I hates as a child. My friends all had long hair and I had to have a short back and sides. One day before a holiday I kicked up a stink in the hairdressers that resulted in my mum and dad pinning me down and my dad shaving my head. Happy days.
Mine is the same as DanniRae and Day6, I almost stepped on one as a 12 year old and was traumatised and paranoid about them ever since.
I hated being accused of something I did not do. I would never back down, no matter what. I got the cane at school at least twice a weak. I never complained when caught for something I DID do. To this day I never back down if accused of something I did not do or say. This has made me very good at consumer law issues whereby I never give in and rarely lose a case.
gilly that's awful.
Sunday’s and sale of the century.
“Earywigs” for me too - the rumour was that they crawled into your ear and stole your eardrum!
My paternal grandmother.
I'm with DanniRae on this, I am terrified of the bloody creatures and always have been! Not keen on tripe, roe, bacon fat, rare meat, avocado, slimey food of any kind, cheese on burgers ( who thought that was a good idea??? ) overcooked vegetable..................bet you're all getting bored with this! Lol
Caterpillars, I have hated them since i saw my friend screaming her head off when one crawled onto her dress (i was about 5, she was older).
I don't like butterflies or moths either they are just flying caterpillars to me.
