What did you hate as a child?

While watching Glastonbury ( briefly!) yesterday, I happened to spot a Punch n’ Judy kiosk directly behind the interviewers and it instantly reminded me how much I hated the whole Punch n’ Judy thing as a child. Just awful, made me feel really ill at ease then, and now! Also hated the rhymes below pictures of Rupert the Bear in those blasted annuals Santa brought every single year! What did you hate as a child?

Jigsaw puzzles! One of my aunts bought me one for my 7th birthday, and being the polite child I was, I thanked her very sincerely for her kind gift. Unfortunately, I made such a good job of it that she told all her 6 siblings how much I loved jigsaws, and I got many more for birthday and Christmas gifts over the ensuing years. Lovely aunt was still enjoying doing jigsaws until shortly before her death last year at the age of 88. Me...never! And every time I put together a piece of self-assembly furniture, I remember why!

I'm not sure I have ever really forgiven him Namsnanny just put it away in a box as you sometimes have to do.

Oh I think he had "a brain transplant" around 13 years ago when my first grandchild was born shock NotSpagetti Well that's the only reasonable explanation for the dramatic change I can think of .

I thought Rupert and his mates were scary.

GinJeannie I also really disliked the Rupert The Bear comics - I can vaguely recall one with a princess riding a horse.....something about it sticks in my mind and I can remember being so frightened by the story.

Sundays were a particular dislike; bored to tears, nothing to do, Family Favourites, cabbage being cooked. Later Journey into Space, Eth and Ron and Hancock's half hour livened things up but then it was time for bed - and school the next day.

I think that’s horrible gillybob. Not just a “what did you hate as a child” memory. I’m pleased he hasn’t been the grandad that he was as a father. I hope you had love and understanding elsewhere. flowers

I had forgotten the showers. And goung to the playing fields in navy knickers where the boys also did sports. Doesn't bear thinking about!

Boiled Winkles! My mother’s idea of a treat for Sunday tea. We each had an egg cup full of vinegar and pepper, a large hat pin to open their little ‘door’ and fetch them, curled, grey, gritty and disgusting out of their shells. Eaten after dipping in the vinegar/pepper mixture accompanied by a slice of wafer thin brown bread and butter. I just had the bread and butter. I still shudder at the memory ?

Sundays, hated them for several reasons and did so right up until I was about 36/7 for slightly different reasons.

Patticake123 Mon 01-Jul-19 13:23:22

Tapioca and semolina pudding served with a lump of red gloop. I’ve never eaten either for 60+ years thanks to school!

Sararose Mon 01-Jul-19 13:18:27

Rice pudding with a skin on top, It often had grated nutmeg on top and I detest nutmeg to this day. but I couldn't stand the feel of the skin in my mouth.

SueDonim Mon 01-Jul-19 13:15:01

Brawn and pigs trotters. I never had to eat them myself but my grandad who lived with us demanded my mum provided him with them. Yuk!

I think I must be the outlier regarding school milk as I liked it. We didn't have a fridge until I was a teenager so I suppose I wasn't used to cold milk anyway.

Communal showers after PE. Humiliating.

gillybob Mon 01-Jul-19 13:13:59

It is a particularly painful memory PageTurner and when I look at my dad with my own grandchildren now, I wonder if he ever remembers how he was when my sister and I were children? I somehow doubt it.

Katyj Mon 01-Jul-19 13:13:34

I hated PE especially when I had my period aged 11 and have to run around with the boys in navy blue knickers! angry

Nanny123 Mon 01-Jul-19 13:13:25

I hated the news because when it came on my brother and I had to be quiet

Foxglove77 Mon 01-Jul-19 13:11:46

I had a real issue with food as a small child after suffering with tonsillitis every winter. I had no appetite and wouldn't eat the family meal so Mum would cook whatever I fancied just to get me to eat something! I usually had bacon and fried egg whites with a chopped up apple covered in sugar.

I've never eaten a School dinner. I used to live close enough to go home at primary and took luncheon meat sandwiches every day at secondary school.

Mum used to give us butterscotch boiled sweets to suck on a long car journey. I still hate butterscotch and boiled sweets now!

Lolly69 Mon 01-Jul-19 13:09:40

My brother and after 72 years nothing has changed

PageTurner Mon 01-Jul-19 13:01:51

*gillybob*. That must have been awful. I remember having a perm that ended up short and frizzy. Horrible.

GreenGran78 Mon 01-Jul-19 13:01:40

I liked school, but hated being painfully shy. I had no real friends, and was very lonely, but was never bullied. Putting my hand up in class was a nightmare, even if I was desperate to go to the toilet.
Going to the swimming baths scared me to death. I was too small to touch the bottom, and spent the whole lesson clinging desperately to the rail. I still haven’t learned to swim, despite having two courses of adult lessons.
Bananas. Not tasted ‘til the end of the war. Someone told me to close my eyes, then stuffed a horrible, sticky, over-ripe banana in my mouth. I still hate them.
Sunday’s, when we weren’t allowed to play out. As soon as I was old enough I used to go for long solitary walks, even if it was raining.
I have never disliked insects or snakes. I find them fascinating, and have a picture of myself with an 8ft long python draped around me. Out of kindness, I won’t post it on here!

The new term when all the girls had new uniforms and shoes or even worse any social occasions where new clothes were worn. I was wearing cheap items, too small, second hand, worn and frayed and worn every day all seasons, summer holidays included - minus the tie then though. I shouldn't have started on this. It sounds so moaning, as I did still have lovely holidays as we lived by the seaside.

Jeanlizzie Mon 01-Jul-19 12:54:52

Warm school milk
PE lessons with a particular sadistic teacher who seemed to spend all lesson torturing me , and the worst thing was overcooked liver i still feel ill at the smell of it

Barmeyoldbat Mon 01-Jul-19 12:52:36

I can't think of anything, maybe the only thing was mum shouting for me to get up and stop wasting my time lying in my pit. Couldn't understand how I was wasting time in bed, reading or thinking but sat downstairs, often in the cold, wasn't.
