Outrageous price ?

Last week, we took a trip to the viewing platform at the top of the Shard in London.

On the 71st floor, there is a bar. I asked what the price of a glass of wine was. £14.!,,I politely declined and bought two bottles of lager at £6 each.
Lovely view up there with tables and chairs, Astro turf even on the floor. But not lovely prices. I always knew London was expensive, but this is taking the Mick.

London theatres are the same. I refuse to pay these outrageous prices & take my own in a lidded plastic coffee mug.

I think I agree with Urmstongran - you know it's a special day out, so you bite the bullet and pay their prices.

When I go to Concerts, I tend to always buy a programme as I want a souvenir of the event.

Although if they charged £7.00 a glass, I am sure they would sell a lot more but then maybe have to deal with more drunken guests. Who knows?

For the price of ten drinks, you could buy a lovely scarf which would give lasting pleasure.

Of course it’s a lot of money, but you can’t compare it to buying a bottle of fizz at your local supermarket. The overheads at these events are huge, and, of course, nobody is forcing you to buy it. Also many of the ‘waiting staff’ are youngsters who are now on a minimum wage, which pushes up the overall pricing.

Standard price at Wimbledon for fizz last year. £8 for a Pimms.

Although it sounds a lot, that is the going price for a glass in most London retaurants. I guess it's where they make their greatest profit.

I would have to be a millionaire or just desperate for food and a drink to justify paying these over the top prices.

We early for our meal in the Shard so went into the bar opposite the restaurant.
My G&T was about £25?
Lemon , only had tea and coffee so far. No excuse.

When in Venice (I think it was for our silver wedding), I,refused to go up the Campanile so I sat and had a coffee in San Marco Square whilst DH went up and took pictures.

A coffee in Italy is a miniscule portion - what the rest of Europe calls an espresso.

It cost me €22!

This was 27 years ago,.

I admit it was served with a miniature biscuit. And I got to go to the loo!

If the "fizz" was champagne it sounds about right for London or an upmarket restaurant in South East.

Most pubs/restaurants near me have the little bottles of prosecco for £7-8. (approximately 1 1/2 glasses)

We went to the Sky Garden in London and a small glass of Prosecco was £12.00, I only had the one !!!

Oh dear, that sounds about average for most eating/drinking establishments, i'll get my coat.

My spritzer was in a local pub/hotel!!

These big sporting events always rip you off,

I went to Wimbledon in the 1970s and "strawberries and cream" was about £1 per strawberry with a slurp of single cream - you could have bough punnets for that price in those days!

I remember asking for a white wine spritzer once, ages ago, and DH said 'That cost £8.50 - I hope you enjoy it!!'.
About half a glass of ordinary white wine topped up with soda water - it must have been the soda that cost so much.

Charleygirl I think around £5.25 (ish) for a full size bottle of Cava is pretty reasonable, (Sainsburys & Waitrose are both considerably more!)

Any wine by the glass in a pub or restaurant will never be good value compared to the price that one can buy a bottle for, but charging £14.00 (as Nankate said in the OP) is just blatant profiteering!

I could/would never be able to justify such prices. Having said that, I’d don’t frequent the places that charge them, so no worries.

Nankate last time we went to Wimbledon the Pimms were about £8-10.

But over time you’d have spent it on something else.

I think, regardless of price (extortionate) it’s part and parcel of ‘a lovely day out’. As in ‘one for the memory box’.

Years ago I went to Paris with a friend on a mini break. One late afternoon we decided to stop off for a wine break. She knew Paris well.

She said ‘we can either sit outside at one of the cafe bars here and pay a lot more, because we are across the road from the Eiffel Tower, or we can drink for half the price two streets back.

I don’t go to Paris often....

Guess which cafe bar we chose?
