School memories

We used to have a long green envelope with twelve sections, and twelve children’s faces, you had to collect twelve pennies

I certainly do Foxglove but ours were from Sunday school.
I had not remembered that it was for Children’s homes and thought it was for overseas children .I do remember the photos cost 1d.
I am talking in the very early 40s .
I had forgotten so thanks for the memory.

We went to the Methodist church when we were girls, and to Sunday school in the afternoon. We all got the little books of children's photos to collect for the National Childrens Homes.
My sister obtained a job as a house mother at one of the first NCH properties, but it ha d become a special school for boys with learning disabilities by then.

My daughter used to listen to Millymollymandy on her Christmas tapeplayer as a little girl! Her sister still complains even now as they shared a room!

I had one most Christmas's and Mary Mouse.

I remember my mother buying Sunny Smiles from someone who called at the door.

I don’t remember Sunny Smiles, but we did bring our pennies to school for the Childhood Society (I think that it what it was called!). The society raised money for African children. You had a card and the teacher ticked a box for every penny you gave and after filling in 20/30 spaces, you were allowed to choose a name for a baby in Africa.

I suppose nowadays, it might seem patronising, but we donated our pennies with all the sincerity that small children have at a young age.

Maybe other Scottish Grannies who went to school in the sixties might remember this.

I remember Sunny Smiles too from our Methodist Chapel Sunday School.

School evokes memories of tepid milk - our third of a pint. The hats too, Panama hats in the summer at primary school then hideous berets with a stiff brim at Grammar school, when we left we all went down to the harbour and threw them in.
I read Milly Molly Mandy but I was an Enid Blyton fan and read most of her series.

I remember having a papier mache house/ money box to save for children in Dr Banardos. Seem to remember there was a blue.egg box too, not sure what for.

At school we had post office savings books and bought a stamp for the book on a Monday. 6d for a Princess Anne stamp and 2/6 for a Prince Charles one. We only had a Princess Anne stamp if I remember rightly. We saved up for Christmas presents.

Yes, I remember going around the church congregation after Sunday School selling "Sunny Smiles". The older ladies were always very generous. I wonder whether they kept the photos?

Yes Marilla I remember the White Fathers coming round when the cards were full and checking the names were all Saints names lots of Mary's and Margarets and Andrews in those days .I can just imagine some of the names the poor wee souls would be lumbered with nowadays

I don't remember Sunny Smiles - I was born in 1957. Perhaps my school didn't do it?

Interesting you posting this today, I was just thinking about 'Friends Reunited'. Such a shame it closed down.
