Just when I thought she wasn't going to say it!

Hello all,

I have a friend with 2 sisters, R & D. When referring to D, she will just say "my sister D" but even though I have known her for over 20 years, she will always say "My sister R, the one who's a barrister"

(I always find myself thinking of Hyacinth Bucket, "it's my sister Violet, the one with a Mercedes and room for a pony" grin )

Anyway, we were having a phone conversation recently about the misdemeanours of cats, as you do, and she was telling me that her cat had brought in a blackbird. I managed not to giggle when she said "You should have seen the mess, there was bird hair everywhere!" confused

She then said "My sister R" I waited for the usual "the one who's a barrister" but it didn't come shock

She went on to explain that they live near some woods where game is raised, and that R's cat often brings in live pheasants and partridges.

I said "Oh goodness, what does she do!"

She replied "She's a barrister" confused

(Still having a vision of a woman in a wig & gown, attempting to cross examine either the cat or the birds, as I can't quite get the connection between being a member of the legal profession and dealing with uninvited wildlife grin )

"Letters after your name" has less qudos these days as they're much more common. Someone I know likes to boast that he is a NQAT (which turns out to stand for " no qualifications at all"

I was once asked at a very formal event by a pompous man who had circulated around the room asking the same question to see who he wished to chat to - "And what do you do my dear? " I leaned in, stroked his shirt and said "Anything you want me to if the price is right." Some people sneered, but I then had a very pleasant evening with the ones who laughed and had a sense of humour grin

A very dear friend, alas now dead, used to say "I'll pick you up in the Rover." She drove an ancient and very battered Landrover complete with bales of straw.

Aepgirl Thu 13-Jun-19 16:46:32

Yes, I have a friend like this. She often says ‘Of course I dressed accordingly - keeping up standards’.

SirChenjin Thu 13-Jun-19 16:01:00

What - even when Flossie Turner wasn't 86??!

Flossieturner Thu 13-Jun-19 15:59:03

My user name is inspired by my Mother. She would have the most elaborate ways of describing people. The one we loved the most was, “My friend Flossie Turner, who’s 86”. She was friends with this woman for years but never changed the description.

My mother used to tell neighbours/friends that I worked in the accounts office as she thought it sounded better than an Insurance Underwriter.
My hairdresser has a room for her hamster.

I detest the thinking that you are only identified by the job you do, rather than as a complete person. I mean no disrespect to those who have worked hard to succeed in their professions and to whom their career is everything. However at training and other works meetings when introductions were being made, I refused to say "I am the manager of X office" but instead used to say "I work as the maager at X office and have a range of other interests as well " . Caused much eye rolling by higher management but I am the sum of many inputs, not just a hum-drum job!

Being from the north, that means nothing to me, Bijou!

When I first married we were poor and lived in an attic flat inLewisham. My mother always told everyone that we lived in a house in Bromley, Kent.

She !!!

I'm laughing all the way through this thread! My M.I.L was such a snob, everyone she met was treated to a potted history of her family.... as long as they had a few letters after their name, I've got a few but alas I was never mentioned s, he made Mrs Bucket look "common" !!

SirChenjin Thu 13-Jun-19 13:37:45

I work for the NHS and it's quite amusing to watch the interactions between the Drs (medical) and the Drs (PhD) grin

Soda Pop smile I was at SIL's do and someone said to me "Oh are you one of the BMW family" "Nah I came in the clapped out old Mini in the drive" His face was a picture my Daughter couldn't stop laughing smile

I always think it is so sad if people need to parade these things in order to feel worthy. Many professionals never mention their profession unless asked, as they feel 'good enough' as they are

gillyknits Thu 13-Jun-19 13:03:46

Our neighbour refers to all of her friends, adding their educational qualifications. Such as, our friend Dave . He’s a got a PhD in ‘doughnuts’. I think she’s an educational snob.?

Apricity Thu 13-Jun-19 12:52:42

It reminds me of the old joke about the proud grandmother showing a friend the large framed photos of her infant grandchildren with the comments "This is my grandson, the doctor, and this is my grandson the dentist"....and so on. The joke is so old I don't think it included professional female offspring.

I often reflect on the deeply perceptive observation made, I think by Jung, that one of the biggest influences on a child's life is the unlived life of the parents and that probably includes grandparents and other family members.
