Harry’s dilemma

Now, I can take or leave the royal family, but I can see that it might be difficult for Harry to have tea with Donald Trump next week, given that he called Meghan “nasty” in an interview with the Sun. Does he go and accord Trump some degree of politeness commensurate with his position as President of The US, can he shake his hand and engage in small talk like he would with any other visiting head of state, or does he treat him to a frosty silence, or turn his back on him, or not go at all and risk a diplomatic incident?

I thought it was a while ago Anniebach - so before she met Harry, or at least well before she became a member of the RF.

As an individual who had come across his sleazy behaviour years before, she was entitled to express an opinion then.

Anniebach Mon 03-Jun-19 12:27:26

The remarks were made during the presidential elections,

I had thought that any remarks that Meghan had made about Trump were some while ago and not in the last few weeks.

Apparently she came across him when she was working on a tv programme many years ago and he was allegedly acting in a predatory manner with the women on the show.

"Only for the assistance from the USA from 1939 to 1945 this country would have been an entirely different place."

The USA is no longer the strongly liberal democratic nation is was at that time. However this is not sufficient reason to forego diplomacy.

EllanVannin Mon 03-Jun-19 10:31:48

I agree with Gillybob too. It is the height of bad manners, democracy or not, though you only have to look at those protesting to see why ( rolls eyes ) with their half-shaven heads, and that's just the women. Surely they can't all be workshy !?

I think there is no doubt that the Queen will be polite and welcoming to Trump.

How does anyone know what Harry (or any other member of the RF) are thinking. If I had to guess (and I don't know) it would be that Harry would think meeting Trump will just be part of the job he has been trained to do and there is no "dilemma"

Anniebach Mon 03-Jun-19 10:20:00

Alexa yes she is head of the Church of England but she is Monarch of the U.K, I agree she should do her diplomatic duty .

Anniebach Mon 03-Jun-19 10:17:35

Yes she is Princess Henry, the same as Princess Michael , same as Diana was Princess of Wales but not Princess Diana

Alexa Mon 03-Jun-19 10:13:52

As head of the Church of England, the Queen has a difficult decision to make. Should she demonstrate against human rights abuses in the US , or should she do her diplomatic duty?

I think she should do her diplomatic duty because the situation with US human rights is not yet as bad as that of Hitler invading Poland. Trump may still be appeased. The other royals should of course follow the Sovereign's lead.

Carooline Mon 03-Jun-19 10:11:51

Anniebach, she actually is a Princess. On the babies birth certificate she is named as a Duchess but her position is named as a Princess of the United Kingdom so the US are right but her title is HRH Duchess of Sussex.

The problem here is that everyone is assuming that Harry hates Donald Trump, but that may not be the case at all.

Thomas Markle, in one of his many interviews stated that before the wedding (when he was still in contact with Harry and Meghan) he (Markle) was speaking critically about Trump, but then Harry said he should give him a chance.

Carooline Mon 03-Jun-19 09:59:27

I think Meghan needs to get over herself. She married into the Royal family & needs to learn what is required of her instead of stomping around demanding like a diva. She is not the centre of attention, far from it, she is a commoner who married well.
It's no longer me me me, it's time to grow up, learn a few lessons on how to be gracious from Catherine...

Anniebach Mon 03-Jun-19 08:37:59

I so agree Gilly

And I think Corbyn and Cable refusing to attend the state banquet is proof they would make useless PM’s.

Callistemon Mon 03-Jun-19 08:33:27

gilly yes, I always thought that the British were more dignified than that.
How embarrassing.

Callistemon Mon 03-Jun-19 08:32:01

We do not have family rulers, Johno - our Queen is Head of State but not our ruler.

We don't have a death row either.

On the whole, I prefer our more civilised type of democracy.

gillybob Mon 03-Jun-19 08:30:22

I think the protests and that idiotic balloon are the very height of disrespect and bad manners. Whatever his politics he is the president of the USA ! Imagine the uproar if her maj or the PM etc. visited the USA and were met in the same disrespectful way? Absolutely disgusting and shameful.

EllanVannin Mon 03-Jun-19 08:26:15

Yes Johno, people of this country can say what they like about Trump but is he any worse than what we've got ?? Plenty of " pot-calling " methinks.

What gets me about protestors is that I bet many of them visit the USA----some on a regular basis ! If I didn't like the leader of a country I'd certainly think twice about visiting that country. Venezuela for instance.

gillybob Mon 03-Jun-19 08:17:42

Poor poor Harry. What a dilemma for him. How must he be sleeping? What with a new baby keeping him up all night and the worry of meeting (or not meeting) the president of the USA. My heart bleeds fo him.

LullyDully Mon 03-Jun-19 08:15:24

jono , you are free to think what you like in a democracy, as are we. I personally find it hard to admire or respect Trump. You obviously think differently.

Johno Mon 03-Jun-19 06:41:20

The Clintons are the biggest criminals in the history of the USA. Both of them should be on death row. Trump is exactly what the USA needs and in fact, is exactly what Britain needs ... A GOOD LEADER. Harry will mean not a tiz to Trump.

maddy629 Mon 03-Jun-19 06:41:03

I don't like President Trump or Meghan Markle but this puerile nonsense, as someone else called it is not worth a post.

Johno Mon 03-Jun-19 06:38:52

The USA, in general, does not accept family rulers in the way the Royals do. They like the pomp but despise the institution. I do not think Trump gives a flying Kite what Harry thinks or does... Prince Harry will mean nothing to President Trump and good for Trump. He is a great president.

I am tired of reading that Donald Trump was elected by the citizens of the USA or that he won a democratic election. Even if you completely discount Russian interference in the 2016 election – which has been confirmed by every intelligence agency in America – he was not democratically elected President by any definition used by any other democratic country in the world.

Hillary Clinton won 2.87 million more [citizens'] votes than Donald Trump, but because of the archaic and systemically inequitable Electoral College votes she lost. (He won 304 Electoral College votes; she won 227.) Votes in some states carry more weight than they do in others because of the unfair distribution of the number of votes each Electoral College can make – it is a truly bizarre system that might have been valid in the past but has no place in the 21st century.

I think he is the fourth or fifth president appointed after losing the popular vote. (George W. Bush was another recent instance.) Hillary Clinton has the dubious honour of having received the highest number of popular votes but still not winning the Presidency.

Just a reminder that Donald Trump boasted that he could have "nailed" [unpleasing frat boy term] the late Princess of Wales. I doubt if Prince Harry or the Prince of Wales have forgotten or forgiven and I suspect that neither is looking forward to meeting the man.

absent Mon 03-Jun-19 04:33:16

Anniebach I think you are mistaken. Donald Trump did not say that what the Duchess of Sussex said was nasty. What he said was, "I didn't know she was nasty". The recording is all over the internet, so it's easy to check.
