Dentures v teeth!!

My dad had all his teeth removed and dentures fitted when quiet young (before I was born) due to problems whilst in the army. He only wore his dentures when leaving the house, and even ate without them much to mum's despair.

You are lucky to have just one tooth bothering you. If it's a back tooth (don't know what you call it), just get rid and have an implant or just nothing.

I think my teeth are so precious and will do anything to preserve them although I do find those interdental brushes a bit of a trial!!

Same in our family apart from DM who rued the day she had to have dentures due to receding gums. Unfortunately I take after her and hate the thought of false teeth. I can see the day coming though....

I have seen a photo of DGM before she had dentures and her teeth are a bit uneven, but look like real teeth. She thought that bad teeth were the root of all ills. Maybe she was right.

My mum let a mad dentist take all mine out when I was 11. Can you imagine?

I fully intend hanging on to my own teeth as long as possible no matter the cost.

An abiding memory of my childhood is of my mum coming home from the dentist with her mouth bleeding from the extraction of all her teeth. This made me determined to hold onto mine. I've had, of necessity, a few extractions, but nothing noticeable - yet.

I do have a theory about tooth extraction. My mum did exactly the same kitty she is now nearly 101.

Now there is evidence that the bacteria found in gum issues is also found in the arteries around the heart in heart disease. So I am wondering if those who had early extractions have better heart health than those who have grotty gum health?

I can remember my dad arriving home with his new dentures. He grinned and I thought he had horses teeth! As they never really fitted him properly, he also used to take them out when eating. This was probably around 1950.

Yes whitewave, I read that too. I cannot ever remember my mother with natural teeth. She had a full set of dentures and lived till 91 .

A month ago my friend took herself off to Turkey to have the whole package done: implants caps etc.
They look absolutely a-may-zing.
She was there 5 days. Flights, hotel and treatment £6,500.
I know this is a lot of money but if your talking a lot of work it's worth it.

I had to see an emergency dentist yesterday where my DS lives as I was in such discomfort, she gave me good advice on how to keep it going until my own dentist removes it on the 12th. It can’t come soon enough for me. Then we have to decide if it is too unsightly and needs another implant. The one I already have is great but very expensive.

I feel guilty as my dentist told me after Xmas that I should have it out and I have delayed the inevitable.

Petra- I had some implants. Started last October and finished treatment in January.
The implants had to be in place for at least 3 months to make sure they ‘took’ before the final teeth were put in.
5 days seems a little speedy.

All I can say is, that it was all done over 2 days in that 5 and the situation is as if no treatment had been done. She came home on the Sunday, I went to see her and everything was perfect. She said the hotel was full of English people having dentist work.
Having had dentistry work done in Eastern Europe I know that we are being taken for a ride in this country where price is concerned.

But what if there was an issue in, say, week 3?

My late mother had all her teeth out in the 70s, I believe. She and dad did this so that 'they'd have no more trouble with them'. I think she may have been in her 50s. I recall the miserable look on her face as she sat in her fireside chair looking literally down in the mouth. She must have regretted it but out of loyalty to dad never complained out loud. It must have been horrible.
I'm going through the implant process due to an accident. It's time consuming and requires commitment and is costly. The experience itself is unpleasant but not unbearable. If you're phobic about dentists though it would be a nightmare. As in the words of the old Dave Clark Five song, when it's finished, I'll be glad all over. Patience is required. Hope you get it sorted soon, Kitty.

The cost of dental care is very expensive here and to be honest implants are almost like the price of a brand new car in the UK. We have lots of amazing dentists abroad as well but you have to do your research. Ive done bits and pieces for my family out of the country with my doctors knowledge.
