Eucryl tooth powder was another one I remember. Amami was a setting lotion, think it was green. Bathing once a week, no showers then, my mother used to put the lifebuoy soap in the airing cupboard to harden so it would last longer. All the left over bits of soap squished together and used up in the kitchen. Wartime economies went on for a long time after the war ended.

Does anyone remember having cocoa and sugar in a piece of paper or cardboard , made into a cone shape when sweets were rationed, and dried egg,

I rember my mother putting Amami on my and my sisters hair after washing and paperclip type things put in to make waves

Does anyone remember Cremola Foam - a tin of pink powder which you mixed with water to make a fizzy drink? We loved it but it was very sweet - I'm surprised we still have teeth.
We also had a semi-soft cheese in a navy blue, white and silver box with a silver foil inner wrapper. I think it was St Ivel - I haven't seen it for years. Perhaps it's not deemed safe to eat anymore.

Oh Cremola Foam! Happy memories of Glasgow summers where the neighbours took turns making jugs of it to share across the garden fences! It may account for the amount of fillings I have!!

lovebeigecardigans I think the St Ivel cheese was actually lactic cheese. It was made in a factory near where I lived in Somerset. I don't think it is around now.

I remember mixing beer and egg and smearing it on our hair to give it shine? Then we had to wash it off quickly as it was quite disgusting. That may have been the same time as I clipped my eyelashes hoping they would grow back thick and long - they didn't

Yes Blondenana, we had the cocoa and sugar in a paper cone as well, also a cone with a bit of sugar and a stick of rhubarb to dip in it, and a great treat, half a pomegranate and a pin, lasted all day!
Remember sugar sold in dark blue paper bags, and flour in muslin bags that my mother used to wash and give us to use as hankies for school.

Family bricks of ice cream - usually neopolitan - 3 flavours in one. Had to be cut into thin slices. Hair washed once a week, something dire would happen if you washed it at certain times of the month.

I remember long bars of laundry soap which sat on a high shelf in the kitchen to get rock hard .A chunk was hacked off with the carving knife when needed. When I was a little girl, my hair was rolled up in curling rags at night. I can remember being in our Morrison shelter in the front room during an air raid ( we lived near the Vickers aircraft factory),whingeing because one of the rags had fallen out and being told in no uncertain tones to shut up!

we had the big red bars of carbolic soap, I think my mum bought it loose from the greengrocer and was cut to the size required in the shop. It was used for washing clothes as well as us kids

I remember we used Selsun shampoo for dandruff. It smelt nice.

callgirl1 Happy memories of sitting on my auntie’s step with a saucer of sugar and a stick of rhubarb! The combination of fruit acid and sugar did our teeth no good at all!

We also used vosene. I had to wash my hair over the basin, and rinse using a plastic cup. And no conditioner! But amazingly I had lovely shiny hair!

I remember the green paper shampoo, they were called Lily Pads.
My Dad used carbolic soap (ugh!!) the rest of us used Palmolive. He got banned from washing up after he did the dishes in Vim and didn't rinse them.

Sara65's post where she mentioned not washing your hair at certain times of the month brought back memories of my mum being the same. Now why would washing your hair when you are menstruating be bad for you, anyone know?
Do you remember Germolene? Lucky bags with a few sweets and a cheap toy inside? Bunty, Judy, Jackie etc? Scrunchy hard loo paper? When self-service first began? When you had the option to have 'scraps' with your fish and chips - these days they have some poncy name.

Sara65. Butterscotch Instant Whip. I have no idea why, but the taste of butterscotch in a pudding, sweets or cake flavouring and icing used to give me an instant runny tummy! I avoid it to this day.

What wonderful memories this thread evokes. We had the pink lifeboy soap, the powdered toothpaste and the sachet of shampoo. We always had our hair washed over the kitchen sink.

I had long ringlets until I was 9 and then my mother decided I was too old for ringlets and had it cut. She hated my short straight hair so, twice a year, she gave me Twink perm. I loathed it as I had to sleep n the perm rollers overnight. Then I had a tight frizzy mess of hair to contend with.

We wore our underwear for a week, except socks which were changed daily. Friday night was bath night and my Nan would pour in Dettol and Washing Soda.
