Just how?

Apart from the early 70’s when my mother and I would enjoy lunch there when she came to London to visit me, I have since found Horrids incredibly vulgar and little more than a tacky tourist attraction.
The “shrine” to Dodi and Diana was the final straw ???

In today’s climate that says it all the haves and the have nots talk about rubbing peoples faces in it.
Like footballers, celebrities, crooks etc greedy b*****ds the lot of them. Love to show off when some people work hard or need to rely on benefits and food banks etc to survive....
Why the DM felt the need to print that rubbish is beyond me as it’s neither news or interesting.

I bought a post card in Harrods years ago just to get a plastic Harrods bag, couldnt afford anything else.I wouldnt accept a plastic bag now.

I used to enter lots of competitions years ago, when there were plenty about. I enjoyed writing slogans. About 20 years ago I won £1,000 to spend in Harrods, with travel expenses and an overnight stay included in the prize.
They provided a ‘personal shopper’ to escort me around the store. She tried to steer me towards the posh designer clothes, but that’s definitely not my style.
It was surprisingly difficult to spend £1,000 all in one go. I returned home laden with bags and gifts for all the family. I live in the north-west, rarely visit London and have never shopped in Harrods since that day., but it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience!

My funniest prize was a “year’s supply of milk.” A competition in my local newspaper. I thought that it would be vouchers, but it was all in one go, long-life and sterilised - which we all hate! It filled the boot and back seat of my car. After giving some away to neighbours I sold the rest to our local corner shopkeeper.

I ventured into the sandwich bar with my friend; we had a cup of tea and a piece of cake, and held each other up as we saw the bill. I was given a dirty fork, too!

My companion of 25 years is a chauffeur for 2 top London hotels where a room is £15K +per night, & the hotels are full, the rich & their entourage all are accommodated. But when they go shopping, its a real eye opener. The shops which most of us just pass - are closed once a customer of this status arrives, for the duration of their shopping spree. My companion is there to carry the bags - only a few but the price is astronomical. The rich are incredibly rich, usually live abroad, and how lucky they are to never ever want for anything. In this case the woman probably had incredibly expensive champagne.

My daughters husband died she came into a great deal of money which some of needed to be spent. It was surprising how difficult it was even though she need to completely furnish a house.

It's just obscene when you think of all the people starving in the world. Like you I find it impossible to imagine spending all that money. Some of it, yes, but as much as that!

Harrods used to have amazing sales. I have bought so much furniture, clothes, shoes, fabrics, glass ware and heaven knows what else. Even a piano in the sale for my children, we sold it after they left home for the price I paid for it! Gave the money to the children.

It was my mother and my big day out to go to the first day of their sale. The last time I went, about 15 years ago, it was rubbish.

I once phoned DH to say I was at the till buying 50 things in Harrods - gave him a heart attack. I had beautiful Christmas tree decorations, silk holly, and other Christmas stuff. £5 the lot - that was a good sale that year! I still use the decorations many years later. Maybe mine is a record too, but at the other end of the scale!

Lindaloulabel I do know this is a frivolous thread but feel I must point out that footballers and many celebs work really hard. If you are in such a competitive world you usually have to work very, very hard to get to the top and then continue to do so to maintain your position. You also don't know how long your success will continue. I wouldn't pay to go to a football match and cannot understand why they earn so much but they must be worth it or the fans wouldn't pay. I don't even know who most of the clebs are but they are clebs because people like them. There are very few jobs which are paid by results but these would seem to me to be such jobs.

It wasn't a spend on lunch. It was an ex department that was a sandwich and designer furniture bar, and she was paying her bill, accumulated over time by the look of it. It could have included tasteful items of furniture. Nice story though

I was astonished too, annsixty, apparently she spent £30,000 in one day on chocolate too.

The other astonishing thing is that, when seen on the tv, she looked like any other woman who'd been shopping at M&S or Primark!

Nonnie their wealth wasn't earned - it is "unexplained" and her spending is being investigated by the NCA after her husband was convicted of corruption.

Unbelievable that a person can have such wealth.I wonder if they really appreciate it.

I do find it easier to ‘spend’ money when I haven’t got it! I can always find exactly what I need/want when I am hard up.
As soon as I can afford it and want to buy a sofa for example.
I can’t find one anywhere to suit me.
Think of the aggravation I would have if I had all that money to get rid of! Thank goodness I don’t have that stress!!

I 'spend' £1m every month in my imagination (a drop in the ocean compared to some) then am thankful if I win £25 - on the Premium Bonds!

All that money and she looks like she could be anybody in the supermarket and that her clothes from a supermarket too.

I used to love going to Harrods in the early 1960s. We even bought a puppy from their pet shop. We children were left to gaze at the pets: monkeys, chinchillas, kittens and pups along with guinea pigs etc. while our DM was buying boring clothes or books. Those were the days when Harrods boasted you could buy anything from them - even an elephant or a lion though I didn't see any.

Although I do think that Lindaloulabel's point about certain celebrities becoming extremely rich without much evidence of talent or hard work is a valid one.

Interesting that the ex-wife of the Amazon boss is giving away half her wealth, as have other extremely wealthy people, and says she will continue to give away most of it to deserving causes.
