Getting ready for an evening out. (Katherine Jenkins). Important items to put in handbag..voltarol, gaviscon and panadol. How times change!?

Urmstongran Sat 21-Sept-19 21:41:18

Surely I’m not the only one on here with several bags? Day or evening. Clutch, cross body, small tote to fit my iPad on some days? Different colours, different sizes.

I recently put a pretty box in my wardrobe. The idea is to empty the contents of whatever bag I’ve just used and then the next day (or evening) rummage through said box and take with me what seems ‘necessary’ for what my plans are.

I got fed up of checking different bags looking for stuff to put in the handbag of choice!
?

I hate rucksacks.

Especially when the wearer forgets the size of them on their back and whacks me as they squeeze past!

Lupatria - I have almost everything you have in yours (no dangle things) plus (!) a drawing pencil, hard pencil, "industrial" metal tape measure, masking tape, notebook, ipad, business cards two different types of scissors, a few samples of yarn (for colour) and a smallish bottle of perfume.
It's not a handbag in the true sense of the word, it's a leather tote.

I own just one handbag and it contains a few Panadol in case the pain in my arthritic feet gets too bad.

Apart from that: purse, keys, notebook and black felt pen (can't see biro now) a small vial of Gucci 'Rush' and tissues.

I've never bought a new handbag. It's worth looking in charity shops. Always a good idea to look in posh areas. I got a beautiful leather handbag from a charity shop on the Fulham Road (the World's End end) for less than £1 about 25 years ago. Still in really good nick and beautiful soft leather. Mostly though I use a capacious canvas shoulder bag my daughter got me from Primark at least ten years ago. Nice wide straps that don't dig in if it's full of heavy stuff.

I wandered round town with a shoe in my handbag once.

I don't so much have a handbag, more of a Tardis.

Be prepared, were you a scout? I travel light, usually with a friend who's as organised as you!

In addition to the usual stuff, I usually have a few random stones, collected by Dgs (nearly 3) who is very interested in them, so a lot are put into granny's bag for safe keeping, though he very often forgets once home..

When Gdd was a bit younger it was ditto with sundry leaves, twigs, conkers, pine cones, etc.

Goodness gracious! I really can't believe how much people carry. Bags must be so heavy, although I have a lightweight Kipling.. I'll have to ask all my friends now.

I carry a small cross-body bag as I like to keep it light. It usually contains my purse, keys, phone, tissues, lipstick, and a few painkillers.

What a wonderful thread reading all about other peoples bags. I haven't had a clear out in ages, so this is what I've just found - Purse containing money, debit/credit cards, NT cards, too many loyalty cards etc; car keys, house keys, paper hankies, small make up bag containing lipstick, eye shadow, mascara, etc; spare lille pads and spare knickers, various types of pills, mobile phone, wet wipes, hair brush, hand cream, address book, various sweets and sweet wrappers, and lots of fluff! Time for a sort out I think. Do men carry all this stuff with them?

annep1 Wed 29-May-19 13:54:18

Transfer bag is great idea.

HillyN Wed 29-May-19 11:20:51

I too have an organiser bag that I can swap between handbags. It contains an eye shadow palette, 2 lipsticks and a lip balm, mascara, small notebook, 2 pens and a pencil, an ordinary comb and a nit comb, a paper bag, a cotton wool pad, a wet wipe (L'Occitane no less- a free sample from a factory tour!), an emery board, a tiny mirror compact from a cracker, a hairband, several plasters of different sizes, Rennies, Cetirizine and thyroxine tablets, nail scissors, clippers, tweezers, Swiss Army knife, mini torch, plastic cutlery, watch, earbuds, playing cards, sweets, sugar cubes, salt sachet, Vaseline, Ventolin inhaler, Sellotape, tissues, old receipts and business cards from restaurants we visited, spare batteries for the camera and of course my wallet with all my cards and a few coins.
As well as all that I have 2 fold-up shopping bags and my camera in the handbag itself and a spare pair of knickers in the zip pocket. I bet you wish you'd never asked now!
It is what my DDs used to call my 'Mum-bag' before they became Mums themselves!

Susangilley Wed 29-May-19 07:02:55

So reassuring to read all the posts! Now my handbag has in it, handgel asthma inhaler, tissues, paracetamol, gaviscon, strepsils, lipstick and eyeliner and keys various of course!. I wear this tomb across my shoulders these days!!

Vonners Wed 29-May-19 00:23:11

No handbag for me, wear trousers most of the time.
Just a purse in one pocket containing cash, cards, keys and migraine pills. Phone in the other pocket. Avoids worry of leaving bag somewhere or having it stolen.

GeorgyGirl Tue 28-May-19 22:39:53

I have a cosmetic bag to keep mobile phone, tissues, pen, bottle of water, polo mints, mini first aid, earplugs, cash and cards in wallet, scarf and either sunglasses or fold-up umbrella. This little bag I transfer from handbag to handbag when I want to ring the changes.
