Lifting the spirits

I’ve been feeling rather down lately but having read some of the very sad situations of our GN members I decided to take myself in hand and improve matters.

I have gone out into the fresh air for a walk each day.
Reduced my time on the internet and returned to reading a book by one of my favourite authors.
Saved the life of a grasshopper who was crawling up the window in the lounge. ?

What do you do to improve your mood ?

Sorry for those feeling low.

I take my kindle out into the garden but end up watching the birds on the feeders or just enjoying all the lovely scents. My Choisia and lilac arecin full bloom and will be followed by my roses, all chosen for their scents.

Then I have my dogs who never fail to raise a smile. They ask so little and give so much.

I like to learn new tunes on my keyboard or play a well-practised one on the piano.

I’ll be seeing my granddaughters later today. They are a joy. And tomorrow the grandsons are staying overnight.

Apart from that just keeping busy and doing things I enjoy.

Fennel. Have never heard that before. I can see me playing it often!

EllenV I’m with you!

I have been feeling low lately due to a broken wrist and also have polymyalgia and take steroid tablets every day which probably helped to cause the breakage but I am on the mend and at 80 years old am still able to walk without any problems
Reading about some of the problems people on this site have helps me to put things into perspective

If I feel blue going for a walk round our small town centre usually cheers me up especially if I am naughty and treat myself to something nice??

I also love reading and go to our local library every week

My husband and I have a special treat tomorrow as my daughter and grandchildren are coming up from Cambridge to take us out for lunch

Good wishes to everyone on here who have problems and just take things one day at a time

I have just read a book called Solve for Happy by Mo Gowlat and I have found it very helpful in dealing with a difficult situation. Maybe others would find the same?

Minerva , I pray for a miracle for your son.

I go to a car boot sale and mooch around. This morning I bought a book, two saucepans, a phone, and three magazines. That's me all set for an afternoons reading.

Sunshine on my face, birdsong ( get loads on YouTube if I can’t get out ), my garden, my daughters, my friends. I’m very lucky but on my down days I cheer myself with happy memories of times gone by and all of the above smile

I garden, walk and sew. (Not all at once). All of these help to lift my spirits.

Walking the dogs, swimming, horseriding, gardening, sewing and reading.

Just booked on for first total knee replacement in June. This will make all the above much easier, even better when the other one gets done. Hope they are as good as the hip one. Next will be lens replacement and possibly bunions. Going for bionic woman.

I drink a bottle of rhubarb gin and smoke.

I throughly recommend it.

NanKate something that would make me feel better today would be to find the person who told you something dreadful was going to happen to a close relative a year ahead and give them a piece of my mind. What a horrible thing to say to you. I imagine you have had months of that playing on your mind that has left you feeling low and taken it's toll on you.

I wouldn't have anything to do with that person again.

The weather will soon be warming up, hopefully, so you can sit out in the sunshine and take all of the good ideas from the lovely GNs above and lift your spirits.

I do wish you well.

My way of helping ,myself going to the local park with my book, and either reading, either in a corner in the cafe,or just on a bench under a tree.

I'm never 'down' in mood but, in contemplative moments, thinking about my children from their earliest years to today, always makes me smile with grateful thanks for the pleasure they brought and still do bring into my life.
Nothing equates to that serenity.

sluttygran Sat 04-May-19 15:16:35

That’s such a lovely thought, Gabriella , I agree with you and shall remember your wisdom!
A walk always cheers me up, especially if it’s sunny, but I know that I’ll have to spend the rest of the day sitting down because even a short stroll knackers my knees and ankles.
I’d rather have sore knees than cabin fever however, so I keep on trekking.
Big hugs and soothing thoughts to those of you suffering low spirits - I do hope you find peace and comfort! flowerscupcake brew

It depends what the reason is, but usually I spring-clean if I am feeling down or sad. That way at least I achieve something and it passes the time better than sitting waiting for something horrible to happen.

GabriellaG54 Sat 04-May-19 16:07:23

How nice sluttygran thank you.
I felt a bit horrible typing your name, as if I was being rude to you (although I know it'sa nickname and you're quite very houseproud)
Enjoy your weekend. grinflowers

I do watercolour painting during the day when the light is good and knit in front of the TV on a night. I battle depression on a daily basis but it never wins!

I like having enough sense to not rush for shelter when it begins to rain - It softens hair and skin, washes away anxiety and lifts the spirits all at the same time -- and it a FREE activity!

granh1 Sat 04-May-19 18:52:40

Get outdoors, be creative with art and crafts, try to look on the positive side - but still get bouts of depression. I think trying to ignore Brexit will help, but that is difficult.
