Argument with DD’s neighbour

As I have mentioned on the Good morning thread a couple of times, DH and I are in the process of doing DD’s garden .for her and the baby. Yesterday we cemented the fence posts in and today we have been fixing the fence panels, clearing etc. My DD lives on a small estate where each resident has one marked parking bay but unfortunately hers is no where near the gate to her garden . This morning my DH pulled the van into the bay right near her gate temporarily so we could unload. Quick as a flash this woman appeared and started shouting “ this is private property , it’s my bay... get out .... bad language... blah blah blah”
I explained that we would be less than half an hour unloading etc. Then we would move ..... oh no not good enough ..... the next thing a man appears and made some serious threats to DH of what he would do if he didn’t move the van ( it’s a small van btw) right now ! I tried to reason with him by saying
“If you just let us unload we would have been moved by now”
Which seemed to make him worse as next thing he puts his fists up ( silly old b*gger) and says he’s getting the police .... Now we did carry on and unload the van and then moved it but DD is really worried (frightened even ) as we are going to have to move rubbish out and have sand , topsoil etc. delivered soon. Incidentally the nutty bloke is the boyfriend of the woman who’s bay it is he doesn’t even live there ( or at least not officially) . Not sure how we can empty the garden of rubbish without crossing/ using “her” bay ( that she doesn’t even bl**dy well use ) ? DD is really worried . In a way I wish he had rang the police ( how crazy ) . Any ideas how we should handle this ? I have never come across 2 nastier old farts in my life !

gillybob I’m away on holiday with the grandchildren (#toooldforthislark) so have only just seen this. At the back of my house is a private access road leading to our garages/car parking spaces and on many occasions people have completely blocked our access because of having to load/unload stuff from their vehicles. It’s a minor irritant, that’s all - I have never been consulted, nor would I expect to be as it’s a given that people will be on their way as soon as they have done what’s needed. Where no offence is intended I think none should be taken.

Gillybob , I sincerely hope that you and your family are not losing sleep over this altercation that has been escalated to the heights by the unkind neighbours and by some GN’s, who I believed, had more sense.
Most neighbours are, well, neighbourly, and it is the greedy, selfish ones who give the others a bad name.
I have dipped in and out of this thread and cannot believe how so many can be so judgemental.
What is done is done, and OK, so it is fine to be knowledgable after the event, but we learn by our mistakes.
Summerlove, if your daughter was upset, unwell, had a small baby, would you not do your best to help her all that you possibly could?
May the fence repair continue apace, and soon all will be calm again, and Gilly’s daughter can enjoy her garden in peace.

gillybob Tue 16-Apr-19 22:10:38

Oh and meant to add that we didn’t have a clue who’s bay it was so we did not think it was theirs we were TOLD it was theirs by THEM and it was not, they lied , (for the kicks it seems) which is clearly very different. As I have made clear upthread my DD does not live in the same street as they do so didn’t have a clue as to theirs or the rightful leaseholders door number or bay number we just saw an unused bay outside her gate and parked in it to unload some heavy materials as we will have to do again later on in the month.

Bloody hell crime of the century ! send for Scotland Yard ! grin

Perhaps some people like to stare out of the window looking for something to complain about gillybob.
Or like to tell others how they should be dealing with their adult children.

gillybob Tue 16-Apr-19 22:03:23

For your information summer my DD asked me to telephone on her behalf as she has a small ( not very well at the moment) baby .

You clearly need something to be really shocked about !!! Pathetic.

Summerlove Tue 16-Apr-19 20:57:53

I can’t be the only one shocked that a mother would call the management company of her (adult) daughters car park?

Regardless what you now know, at the time you thought the bay was theirs. Your daughter should have asked, or called managemgbg.

Just because something sits for ages doesn’t mean it’s now a free for all. Goodness.

gillybob Tue 16-Apr-19 17:43:53

Correction ..... Do not think he was saying anything at all he wouldn’t stand by !

gillybob Tue 16-Apr-19 17:42:48

The bay had also been empty for many months ( at least 5 that my DD knows of ) so who in their right mind would want to see someone carrying several large and heavy fence panels around 2 streets rather than “let them” park in a bay (that isn’t theirs to police anyway ) right near the gate of the garden ? I understand that some people are just busy bodies and like minding other people’s business . The young man at the management company recorded the entire conversation so I do t think he was saying anything at all he wouldn’t stand by. For the record he also suggested that maybe we had someone “beefy” to accompany us the next time .

It must be brilliant to be perfect and also to be strong enough to be able to carry heavy fence panels around the streets. Would you suggest we ask the delivery drivers to carry the tonnes of soil, cement and paving stones too eazybee ?

Callistemon Tue 16-Apr-19 17:31:39

I don't understand why gillybob should have asked these people - the parking bay is directly outside her DD's gate and not the outside the neighbour's.
It was not until this neighbour started yelling that it was her space that they had an inkling they may have parked in the wrong place and they then explained nicely that they would only park there temporarily.

As it turns out, it is not the woman's parking space anyway.

25Avalon Tue 16-Apr-19 17:27:55

Easybee and Eglantine I wouldn't dream of parking in a space that I thought belonged to someone.

DIL17 Tue 16-Apr-19 16:12:14

They shouldn't have been so confrontational BUT even if they don't use the bay, you should have asked first.

It's polite.

Eglantine21 Tue 16-Apr-19 15:56:31

Only me and you eazybee who wouldn’t park in a space that we believed to belong to someone else, just because it suited us...........

eazybee Tue 16-Apr-19 14:35:32

Several posters have read all the posts and know that Gillybob believed the parking bay was the property of the neighbours when she parked there, therefore her behaviour was discourteous and she should apologise.

The young man at the Management Company seems to have rather too much to say for himself: "tell the people to shut up and mind their own business"; "he will happily put them right about the legalities of the bays;" "(these people) probably spend a lot of time at their windows looking for things to shout about. Unprofessional and unwise.

Your daughter still needs to inform her neighbours about the legalities regarding the parking bay they believe to be theirs. They may well have been told that it was theirs; my son's neighbour was told she owned two parking bays when she bought the house when it was first built, and close to me the converted old school has two marked bays in the layby outside forbidding anyone to park there, put up by the builders and meaningless as it is public highway.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 16-Apr-19 12:01:20

Some people are just not very nice gillybob, I hope it goes ok when th future deliveries and rubbish collections.

gillybob Tue 16-Apr-19 11:06:45

Thank you for kind words Bellanonna and others they are very much appreciated. smile

gillybob Tue 16-Apr-19 11:05:28

Neighbourly indeed Beckett I think these people clearly like minding other people’s business and as the gentleman at the management company said “probably spend a lot of time at their window looking for things to shout about” . Yes most of the forthcoming deliveries will be from local building suppliers , no trades people just DH and myself ! This is very much a DIY project . Should be interesting . smile

Beckett Tue 16-Apr-19 10:03:44

You say you will be having other deliveries - will these be delivered by the companies you buy from? If so it would be interesting to see how aggressive they are when a couple of large strong gentlemen park in what they consider their space.

I am fortunate to have a large drive and often allow delivery vans, trades people etc. working on my neighbours properties to park as long as they leave me room to get out. It's just being neighbourly

Bellanonna Tue 16-Apr-19 09:59:19

So many self-righteous people on here, some of whom clearly having only read the OP before putting in their own unhelpful and critical twopennorth, and not taking into account Gilly’s later addition after she had contacted the management company. So sorry you have had this nasty encounter Gilly , and that you have had to put up with the high-handed criticism on here. I’m so glad you’ve got things sorted now. Let’s hope future encounters with those nasty people will be less fraught.

gillybob Tue 16-Apr-19 09:33:30

My son might be able to come Gonegirl depending on whether he has to dash for the children straight from work . Good idea. x

Gonegirl Tue 16-Apr-19 09:25:40

gillybob is there some younger (stronger looking) person who could come with you on Thursday? They wouldn't need to do much, just be an extra strong-arm presence.

Apart from that - have the police on speed-dial.

gillybob Tue 16-Apr-19 08:22:53

Thank you to everyone who has made kind, helpful comments. I appreciate it is quite hard to keep up with such a long thread and for that I apologise.

We only ever pulled up into the bay because it is right outside my DD’s back gate and DD said she had never seen anything parked there for months . The intention being to unload the fencing, cement and tools and then park around the corner. We are taking the rubbish to the tip on Thursday night straight from work so that should be interesting as it will take us a good half hour to load up .

At least the management company have it all on record now (the young man said he would save the recorded conversation just incase of future repercussions) so that’s something I suppose.

why oh why do some people have to be so bloomin’ awkward and unreasonable ?

50ShadesofGreyMatter Tue 16-Apr-19 05:46:07

Your DD must report these people to the police. Then if it happens again, the police have a record of previous threats which will help your DD.

lemongrove Mon 15-Apr-19 22:29:52

Sounds as if they have come to regard the empty bay as theirs gilly as nobody else appeared to be using it.
Horrible people!

Niobe Mon 15-Apr-19 22:28:55

Gillybob , my previous comment about going round with chocs and flowers etc was made under the assumption that the space was exclusively theirs but with the info you got from the management company it is clear you have nothing to apologise for. If they take umbrage at you using the space again politely refer them to the management company.

lemongrove Mon 15-Apr-19 22:28:28

People get very territorial don’t they, especially where space is ‘tight’......in fact all animals do!
I know somebody who moved all his fences ( at great expense) when he found that four inches of land was actually his! confused
