How mean can you get?

Many years ago when my son was young I took a cleaning job to make ends meet. My pay was 19 shillings and sixpence for 4 hours. She always gave me a pound note, and I had to give her sixpence change. (That's 2 and a half pence in new money for anybody not old enough to remember pre-decimal money). At Christmas she gave me the pound note and told me to keep the change as it was Christmas. Then she said "do you like raspberries?" She took a massive bag of them out of her freezer and carefully weighed out 4 ounces on her kitchen scales. A few extra fell out of the bag, so she put them back. Then she said "don't worry about pesticides. My neighbour gave them to me, and he doesn't spray them".
So my Christmas present was 2 and a half pence and 4 ounces of raspberries somebody had given her.
Can anybody beat that for meanness?

I used to clean for a someone who often asked if i could do an extra hour, which i did get paid for or an extra day, which i always obliged, often leaving me with her brat of a child,at Christmas she gave me one of those fancy air fresheners looking like a flower, they were 49p in a shop in town
Another lady i cleaned for, and a millionaire ,once gave me back what i had bought her the year before, but to be fair she was really a lovely lady who always made me a drink of coffee and cakes ,, and we chatted for about 30 minutes, she often said dont bother with the kitchen floor if time ran out,she said she would do it

My mother was given a scrubbing brush for her 10th birthday. Her mother died when she was 9 and she had to look after her younger brothers. She had no shoes and had to leave school to look after her brothers. Her father turned to drink and they lost their home so she ended up living in a wooden shack looking after her father and brothers.
I never heard her complain about anything. She would give away her money to anyone she thought had greater need.
In later years she met my dad and he and all our family loved her to bits. She was the most loving person you could meet. The scrubbing brush story was always told with a smile and a laugh.

I once worked for the wife of the CEO of a very large American Bank. The wife was given a monthly "allowance" of £24,000. Yes, a month!. I was once overpaid by £1 by her. She deducted said £1 from my next wages.

Is this thread not in danger of turning into another “Misery Memoir”?

My ex is noted for his meanness. In our smoking days he used to have a packet with one cigarette in it so he didn't have to hand them round.

MawBroom- I am not harking back, it was a light hearted post which I thought would amuse. Other Gransnetters are sharing similar stories from many years ago.
Quite honestly, it makes me wonder why I bother to be sociable. This is not the first time I have been belittled like this.
I have had enough of Gransnet. Bye bye.

Gonegirl Fri 29-Mar-19 20:12:05

Come back Littleannie! I was just going to say something.

Gonegirl Fri 29-Mar-19 20:13:28

Mawbroon read another thread.

Go and have a jolly on a Brexit thread.

Gonegirl Fri 29-Mar-19 20:15:16

All I was going to say was, izezi I wish I hadn't read that. [sad[sadsad [bawl]

Littleannie Fri 29-Mar-19 20:15:40

I'm still here Gonegirl. What were you going to say?

Gonegirl Fri 29-Mar-19 20:18:03

We crossed posts. I'm sad about izezi's dad.

My grandmother was given a box of chocolates by an admirer (whom she later married and gave him such grief that he ended his own life - very sad indeed) and my brother and I (aged about 4 and 5) asked if we could have one. There were 2 left in the box. She put one in her mouth and cut the other in half and gave us half each - thanks grandma!

MawBroon Fri 29-Mar-19 20:57:20

Oh dear!
Don’t think I’ll bother with the Brexit threads thank you Gonegirl - too many belly laughs for my Tena lady’s to cope with.
I’ll just watch “Angela’s Ashes - the Musical”
(And please don’t boss me around)

Gonegirl Fri 29-Mar-19 21:01:20

Luckygirl that was quite reasonable. It was the last one!

crazyH Fri 29-Mar-19 21:01:28

Katy, your story took the biscuit ?
could not believe folks could be so mean

Gonegirl Fri 29-Mar-19 21:05:27

That's not as bad as zezi's. A Christmas stocking full of coal! sad

Gonegirl Fri 29-Mar-19 21:05:55

?

Farmor15 Fri 29-Mar-19 21:11:08

I think children used to be told that Santa Claus would only give them coal if they weren’t good. ☹️

Gonegirl Fri 29-Mar-19 21:12:48

sad

Farmor15 Fri 29-Mar-19 21:20:38

I never heard of a child actually being given coal up to now, but adults were often quite cruel to children, thinking it was a joke. My parents gave me a nice looking piece of chocolate cake once, that was made of plastic. Another time it was a lovely looking apple, that was wax. The worst was the time my mother put a fake worm in my cabbage!

They weren’t bad parents but just seemed to have a warped sense of humor.

When my sister didn't have a car but needed some shopping I said I get it for her.
When I got it back to her, she asked how much it was and it had come to £9.99, she gave me a tenner and asked for the receipt AND the penny change!

Dh's old aunt was the worst I've ever known. Plenty of money but loathed parting with any of it. Once went with her to a wool shop - she was a keen knitter - where the expensive mohair yarn she wanted came to something like £14.12p.
She told the assistant she'd have it if she knocked the 12p off! Assistant said it wasn't her shop, she couldn't - aunt went on arguing about it. So cringe-making.

Another time she wanted a new mug - poor dh had to trawl umpteen shops with her, where she'd screech, 'HOW MUCH???' and off they'd go to another. Finally found one in a charity shop for pennies.

Then she'd get her lovely,, long-suffering cleaning lady to do her shopping for her, and would have a go at her if she hadn't gone to a separate shop for the butter, where it was 1p cheaper.
I used to call her Queen Midas. At her funeral dh made a little speech where he added that there'd have been another screech of, 'HOW MUCH???' if she'd known the cost of her send off. Everybody cracked up - she was so well known for it.

Oh, and after she finally had to go into a care home, she refused to pay the fees directly - 'If they know I've got money they'll find a way to steal it,' so dh had to pay, then write one of her own cheques for her to sign, to pay us
back.
I'm only surprised that seeing the amount in £££££ - 'HOW MUCH???' - didn't finish her off with a heart attack rather sooner.

Reading some of these posts seems to confirm that those with the most (the richest) are the greediest.

I was once given a pair of second hand gloves by my late MiL . They were very obviously well worn too.
