What are you doing on Mothers Day?

Till I read this I hadn’t thought about me! Been helping the DGChildren sort their little presents for their mums as both my girls are now single parents. On Sunday I will just cook dinner as usual then have a restful afternoon with time to think about my Mum who died 38 years ago. Expect my youngest daughter who lives locally will pop in.

I will be visiting the cemetery first of all to take flowers to my mum, then on to my daughters for lunch.

I think we can get too hung up on “Mothers Day” which I will still call Mothering Sunday.
My daughters are all now mothers and I think the focus has moved. I am in fact babysitting overnight for one so that she can take her DH out as a surprise as he is very low, his own mother has Alzheimer’s and it is hitting him hard. On Sunday we shall all do something involving lunch together plus the “new” mother , other SIL and my 14 day old DGS.
I am being taken out to lunch by eldest DD on our new invention Mothering Monday - because you can’t be everywhere at once smile
However, as a sort of reverse Mothers Day gift I have bought one each of these in their name to show my appreciation of them as wonderful mothers (as well as daughters) themselves.

We are definitely not ritual people either. I remember trying to book a family meal one Sunday in March - it was Nana's birthday - and couldn't understand why everywhere was fully booked. We ended up at a very posh place where the ladies were given flowers and chocolates!
I doubt I'll be taken there again.

DD has invited us over on Sunday. My son is coming over around 1pm, it will be just him and youngest DGD as his wife is working, and elder DGD is working also (washing up in a pub!)

Mum is also invited and my Brother, SIL and Niece, so will be a lovely family get together.

No DM or DMil around any more. Going to DD's on Sunday, have no idea what she has planned. Will not see DS as he is working in London, but his partner and my DGDs are joining us.

My mum died when I was 14 so I usually have a quiet half hour with a cup of tea and wonder what she’d be like now at 83 ( my dad is still alive).

I’m in Spain so my daughter and I had a posh afternoon tea two weeks ago and talked about my mother and how much we’ve all missed out on by her early passing.

My husband and I have booked the 3 course Sunday lunch & cava for €15 at our local bar so will honour the day anyway.

M0nica’s last two paragraphs echo what I’ll be doing more or less exactly. (Not the first paragraph because I don’t do either praying or sewing!) I expect my sons will ring me and send cards, but I have told them I don’t expect or want presents.

Going to a collector's fare.

I hope my daughters and daughter in law are spoilt rotten - they are the hard working mums in this family.

Like MOnica, I'm the older generation now and cards have arrived and been saved, small presents will turn up and I am pleased with that.

No mother or MiL. DD is taking me to Homebuilding Show at NEC ?

M0nica Fri 29-Mar-19 06:49:52

I am now the older generation. So neither mother nor MiL to remember, other than in prayerr, so this Sunday I will be doing much as I do on any Sunday, cook a nice lunch, have a proper pud, rather than just fruit and spend the afternoon sewing.

Neither of my two children live near enough to visit, but they will both send cards, and I will be seeing both for long weekends in the next few weeks.

And that will suit me just fine. Christmas apart, I am just not much of a ritual celebrator, so neither are DC. My DC show how much they love me in so many other little thoughtful ways that I am unbothered, actually quite relieved, not to be receiving overpriced flowers or knick knackery that will quietly end up at a charity shop in a year or so's time.

I've made Mothers Day cards for my Mum and my MiL and I'm making a cake to take. MiL and DM love home made things. I know MiL will be missing seeing her Grand daughters and great Grandchildren who she hasnt seen since November 2018. She cries about this a lot and we try to comfort her, but it's sad. I might tell her that my Gs has gone back to China, but it might make her too sad. At least she got to meet him once.
My Mum is too far away to visit, but I've posted her something nice. This Mother's day I am going to miss two of my (absent) sons and my Grandson who I suspect won't be in England, but I'm going to focus on trying to make it good for my MiL and being happy with what I do have. I think sometimes "happy" occaisions aren't always easy for a lot of people for various reasons. I appreciate my MiL because without her I wouldn't have my DH.
