What are you doing on Mothers Day?

I've made Mothers Day cards for my Mum and my MiL and I'm making a cake to take. MiL and DM love home made things. I know MiL will be missing seeing her Grand daughters and great Grandchildren who she hasnt seen since November 2018. She cries about this a lot and we try to comfort her, but it's sad. I might tell her that my Gs has gone back to China, but it might make her too sad. At least she got to meet him once.
My Mum is too far away to visit, but I've posted her something nice. This Mother's day I am going to miss two of my (absent) sons and my Grandson who I suspect won't be in England, but I'm going to focus on trying to make it good for my MiL and being happy with what I do have. I think sometimes "happy" occaisions aren't always easy for a lot of people for various reasons. I appreciate my MiL because without her I wouldn't have my DH.

My lovely Mum died (at age of 80 yrs) in 1984. Still miss her most days. On Sunday I will be taking it easy - but am being taken out on Saturday by daughter who lives near me and her daughter for a day out at a large and very lovely, Garden Centre. Will have lunch there, and the other children will have sent that daughter cash so that I will have a goodly sum of money to spend as I wish at the garden centre.
Hope that on Sunday my g.children will all be baking cakes and looking after their Mums (my daughters).

MB so like your practical but family warm celebration of the 'occasion'. Any excuse for contact with family suits me fine.

We took Mother’s Day things to my MiL last weekend when we visited last weekend. I will visit my mother on Sunday.
I’m not expecting anything from two of my children this year as my daughter suffers mental health issues and has caused yet more terrible upset yet again this last week. One of my sons may visit.

My mother died when I was 11. My children have never sent me a card yet (and they didn't in France either, when it is May), so I expect I'll be doing bugger all. As usual.

Not a lot hopefully! I am happy to have a quiet day. although I have sons only 20-30 mins away but I appreciate it is more a day for my DiLs now. I do always get a card & a pressie but not necessary on the day- usually before. Elder son may well pop over as he is not living with his wife for some years now although they are still good friends.
I will get chocolates or flowers from the cats via DH as usual.
It looks as if the weather is going to be great so maybe fire up the barBQ- then DH can cook. If not I think there will be a couple of good rugby games on TV in afternoon- couldn't ask for more!

Just heard that my grandson (9) is taking his mum out on a date tonight for mother’s day ( as he will be away with daddy on Sunday ) .

GS “ I’m taking you to the cinema tonight for your mother’s day treat mum and you can have whatever you like .... popcorn, big drink, natchos, hot dogs ..... anything ......”

DiL “wow, how lucky I am ..... what are we seeing ?”

GS “Dumbo and don’t worry about the cost cos daddy’s paying “
grin

Like so many GNers I no longer have DM or MiL but have planned to take flowers to DM grave tomorrow.

On Sunday both DDs and DH are taking me out for brunch as DD1 has to get back home in the afternoon. We won't see DGD as SiL is taking her to see his DM on Saturday for an over night stay.

I have already made sure Daddy knew to get things and DGD has a gift for DD1, I also left a gift for her to give to DD1 from me too.

We had the "why are you giving mummy a gift granny she's not your mummy?" Lol, so I said because she works so hard at being a lovely mummy and a great daughter and she deserves lots of love.

DD2 is single and the girls are having Spa Day on Saturday with a film fest to follow then all together for brunch on Sunday.

I am so pleased SiL is going to see his mum and as much as I'd love to see DGD I'm happy she is going to see her Gran. She hasn't see her since Christmas, they do Facetime and WhatsApp and her Gran sends her lovely letters and poems so they have a good relationship even though we see more of her.

I don't remember being this organised when the girls were young and I wonder how many Mothering Sundays my Mum went without the day being marked. I don't know if it was just me not being very aware of the day, we did live abroad a lot when the girls were young and not so in you're face then, but even so I'm sure I don't think I was as thoughtful to my Mum as my girls are to me.

Whatever you are doing may you enjoy your day.

DS1 has sent flowers and a card ; if I'm lucky, DS2 may text a picture of flowers and a card....

We are lunching out at the invitation of a friend. Families live too far to visit and in any case will likely spend the day with their in laws. Twas ever thus.

ninathenana Fri 29-Mar-19 11:13:52

DD is away for the weekend so DH is cooking steak for DS and us. I will watch the Bohemian Rhapsody DVD DD bought for me.

lincolnimp Fri 29-Mar-19 11:04:23

Older generation here as well, so no DM or MIL.
Will be leading service at one of our local churches, with an emphasis on how mums, and churches, make mistakes.
Then tackling the dreaded M25, M11 A14 en route to youngest DD and family. Co incidence that it is Mothering Sunday for this visit, we are needed to support family for a few days while DD does return to nursing course.

maryhoffman37 Fri 29-Mar-19 10:58:31

Mother gone 45 years and MiL 25. I will be flying to Italy for work on Sunday. Will probably get cards from some of my three but don't need them to know I'm appreciated and loved. And I'm sorry for those who find it a hard day.

1inamillion Fri 29-Mar-19 10:57:20

Mothering Sunday will be different this year, my mother died many years ago and mil in January. DD will be in Beijing and Dil is working nights. DS will probably come to lunch.

Maw the gifts are a lovely idea and what a lovely thing for your DD to say, something to treasure.
The whole concept has become very commercial with a lot of pressure put on families to 'buy', whereas a card and a hug, or phone call can mean so much.
Wishing all a Happy Mothering Sunday ?

helenmabr Fri 29-Mar-19 10:45:43

Meeting up with my mum, my daughter and family, three sisters and their children and my auntie. So there will be 7 mums altogether and 16 of us for a nice meal out. Looking forward to it

Juicylucy Fri 29-Mar-19 10:45:26

Putting last of Mother’s Day cards out for the late comers as I work forcgreeting card company. Then flowers on my mums grave, walk and drink in country pub with a friend as one daughter in Australia the other away for the weekend. Have lovely day everyone ?

GabriellaG54 Fri 29-Mar-19 10:43:08

My mum, having died 20 odd years ago will have some fresh flowers and a message put on her grave (with my dad) by my friend who lives nearby as it's nearly 200 miles away from me.
She takes and sends a photo every year.
I expect nothing from my children as I know they love me but my youngest always sends me 2 dozen particular long-stemmed white roses which have dark green leaves tinged with red - beautiful.
I might get cards or other stuff but the best thing is speaking to them as they all live more than 150 miles away.
I don't need thanks or evidence of their love.

Saggi Fri 29-Mar-19 10:38:34

I dont bother with mum’s day..... my kids send a card and if they turn up they’ll bring flowers or chocs or books. I usually ask them to dinner and I end up just cooking the meal and washing up so this year I’vedecided to stay quiet and not invite them. My daughter has her own kids so they will be wanting to do something together anyway. My son is un-partnered and no kids so if I don’t invite him for lunch he will keep card and give it to me when he sees me . We’re all pretty laid back by mums day and if they forget I’ll just shrug and move on. Don’t take umbrage and never hold a grudge. Soul destroying stuff that!

Jacqui1956 Fri 29-Mar-19 10:35:51

No mother of MIL, children live 300miles away so much the same as any other Sunday...cleaning, cooking dinner.....

Annaram1 Fri 29-Mar-19 10:33:15

there are some lovely stories on here, but also some ver y sad ones, Annieb, my heart goes out to you and your family. You are big hearted enough to wish us happiness on Mothering Sunday. May your grandchildren one day send you cards on this day.
Everyone, have a lovely day. I have had a card from my dear daughter who unfortunately fell out with me some months ago. But I don't think it really marks a change in attitude. I wish it did.

Flowerofthewest Fri 29-Mar-19 10:32:07

**correction I only have 2 DDS. ..I meant DS3 will be working ...oops

Flowerofthewest Fri 29-Mar-19 10:30:29

I'm having my mum here for Sunday Roast of her choice. My DS2 .is taking his wife and children out as is my DS1 . DS1 is coming over Sat instead. DD1 is taking me out for breakfast on Sat. DD2 lives 100 mile away but is making me a special box up for when I see her in a couple of weeks. DD3 will be working. I expect I'll get a phone call. Love them all to bits. The mums all deserve to be spoiled rotten.

henetha Fri 29-Mar-19 10:22:24

One son has already said he will be visiting me on Sunday morning, and the other son will, as he always does.
I am so lucky.
My heart goes out to mothers whose children don't bother, or cannot for whatever reason.
My own mothers/mothers-in-law are long gone, but I shall be thinking of them.

Theoddbird Fri 29-Mar-19 10:20:51

I have Sunday off work...unusual. If it is sunny I will sit on riverbank and sew. One daughter is visiting with her family on Saturday. Won't see my other two children.

nettyandmasey Fri 29-Mar-19 10:16:54

I have my mum, step dad, three adult children, two son in laws and four grand children here for lunch. So cooking ! Xx

Nanny123 Fri 29-Mar-19 10:16:00

Its my granddaughters 16th Birthday on Saturday and the family are all getting together to celebrate her birthday and Mother’s Day. Quite a special day as my granddaughter was born on Mother’s Day 16 years ago and she has a special date as she was born on the 30.3.03 (which is the same backwards) and her mum was born on the 18.8.81 (which is the same backwards) What a lovely way to celebrate Mother’s Day with all the family
