This thought came into my head when i woke this morning and was gingerly getting out of bed as my back and legs are so stiff first thing. I didnt appreciate being able to jump out of bed in a flash.I never appreciated my youthful beauty always wishing i was better looking, slimmer, and not realising that the wrinkles and drier skin would impact on me so much. I always remember once being told i was volumptous and laughing but looking back at old photos i can now see i was. If only if only.........

grannydubh I couldnt agree more. I say this regularly.
And telling people to smile when the cameras are pointed at you, just the normal smile, with teeth.
I suppose this generation will look back in wonder at how strange or puzzled they look in pictures
'it was the style at the time!!' is one I use to excuse hairstyle, outfits or glasses worn in my photo albums

Reading all the posts about jumping makes me wonder if there is a sort of jumping rewind cycle of life. I recall watching my children and later grandchildren at the toddler stage trying to figure out this jumping business that bigger people seem to have sorted. The little treasures stand there industriously bending their knees, concentrating very hard and absolutely nothing happens! Their feet are still on the ground. And then they look at you full of puzzlement and frustration. ?

"If only" - in my mind the two saddest words in the English dictionary, and I try never to regret, never to say them. What's gone is gone, the present and the future the only times that matter now.

If only I was as fat now as I thought I was when I was young.

With regard to jumping, my DGD had her 1st skipping rope and was showing me how she was trying to skip. She then asked if I could skip so I had a go and was surprised it was quite good. Looking amazed she said 'I've never seen a 71-year-old skipping'. It made me laugh, anyway.

Willynilly and dragonfly46 I am so sorry. It’s useless to send love, but I really want to send you some.

When I was a teenager my father would often ask, in the morning, ‘Did you sleep well?’ This seemed a pointless question to me. Sleep was surely just to
what happened when you put your head on the pillow! Now I know different ....

Awhile back I had a go on my GC trampoline. No problem whatsoever and I was enjoying it but CONSTANTLY aware that I might fall atop one of the GC who would insist on joining me. That impaired my pleasure somewhat but I'll always remember their Mum going past, looking at me and saying '77?' and walking on with shrug and a totally bemused smile on her face. She was obviously 'age programmed'

Thank you silverlining and I wish you well with your operation tomorrow.

Am making the most of things Juliet. Yes it is a lovely day though the wind was sharp earlier.
Tomorrow i am going into hospital for an operation, my first ever proper op, so will be recovering like you. Best wishes and hope you feel better very soon.

Wow silverlining all that walking!! Who needs to bounce on a trampoline?! I'm lying here recovering from a second hip replacement and hoping I shall be able to walk that far again eventually. It looks such a wonderful spring day out there.

Reading these posts it's the ones about not appreciating your parents while you have them that resonates most with me. My dad has been gone nearly fifteen years now and Mum too has dementia. Most days she does still know who I am but finds talking on the phone almost impossible. How I miss them both.

silverlining48 Mon 25-Mar-19 14:59:58

Just back from a lovely walk in the beautiful local countryside and am grateful that despite a bad knee I can still still enjoy a walk with a wonderful view. Something i wouldn’t have appreciated when I was younger. 0ver 10,000 steps and 5 miles. Not too bad for a 70 year old.

Gillybob- you lucky girl !! smile

When I walk with a walking group of mainly ageing folk, stiles are a nightmare. We take forever to negotiate them and each of us lands with a thud. Thank goodness lots are being replaced by kissing gates, much more civilized, even though one can become wedged in with a rucksack!

My parents scrimped and saved to send my sister and me to excellent private schools. I wish I had worked harder and not wasted my opportunities. I thought all children went to fee paying schools.

In my 50s I pulled up my boot straps and went to Uni, but of course my wonderful parents never knew that.

Juliet27 Mon 25-Mar-19 13:57:22

I remember my mother saying she'd lost her spring. I now know what she meant.

Blinko Mon 25-Mar-19 13:14:10

GD1 said 'Jump, Grandma, you can do it - like this '. I discovered, like someone else on this thread, that I couldn't jump any more...

What happens to being able to jump when you reach 70? Why?

cassandra264 Mon 25-Mar-19 13:01:40

I and my sibling lived a long way away from our wonderful grandparents (on both sides) and several wonderful great aunts too.

While we all visited each other when we could, this happened less frequently as they grew older and less mobile. I wish so much (in the days when use of the phone was a luxury controlled by parents!) I had written more often and let them know how much they meant to me. Especially in their last years, when I was in my twenties and too busy with new job, new husband, and new home - again, too far away.....

grannydubh Mon 25-Mar-19 12:58:38

Always thought of my teenage self as fat. Looking at photos I can see know that while I was never skinny no way was I fat.

Jane43 Mon 25-Mar-19 12:31:14

Definitely my parents, not that we didn’t get on but I didn’t realise what very special people they were until they were gone. Both were from large working-class families and had a lot of hardship to endure in their early years so made sure my brother and I had a much better life than they did.

David1968 Mon 25-Mar-19 12:00:50

Coulda, woulda, shoulda........ Oh dear, please don't get me started! But I think I wouldn't have the happy life I have now, without some of the mistakes I made then. Rien, je ne regrette rien......
