This could be a thread where the great unanswerables of life could be aired. The following one occurred to me at lunchtime.

Why does peanut butter so often come in those silly jars with a shoulder in which the stuff gets trapped, making it impossible to get it out without a small teaspoon or your finger? The world contains many other versions of glass jar - the Bonne Maman jam jars would be perfect - wide at the top and narrow at the bottom.

Problem with Marmite? JARS get the squeezy bottles instead.

Anniebach - why do you buy plastic buckets from Amazon. What's wrong with your local hardware store, or even supermarket?

A lot of food containers are impenetrable because of the 'tampering' scares we had a while ago. I often have to ask my son to open the 'push and squeeze' type bottles of bleach, etc.
My GD has a part-time supermarket job. She says that they often find partly-eaten items tucked away on shelves, even things which were well-packaged.
I choose unpackaged fruit and veg, when possible, and have to stop the till operator from putting it in a plastic bag after she has weighed it.
I buy large bottles of liquid bath soap to top up my hand-wash and shower bottles because I can't tell the difference, it avoids throwing away so many bottles, and it is much cheaper, too.
Gaps under/over toilet doors are there to provide access if someone is taken ill inside.
My 'unanswerable' is - how the hell do fieldmice get into my house? I know that they can creep through the tiniest of spaces, but they have got me stumped! They are such cute little things, and i would never hurt one, but I don't want them in the house. Luckily, I have an excellent mouse-catching method involving a mesh wastepaper basket, a pen, and a ball of string.

Day6: How true! Our cat does exactly the same thing. Also, if I have a blanket over my knees, she refuses to sit on my knee, so, sucker that I am, I always take the blanket off. If she is on my lap I’m not allowed to move apart from stroking her or tickling her ears!
The answer is , because we love her! (I think she loves us back, but I’m not totally sure!)

I think the answer to all of your problems is either 'Sods Law' or 'Murphys Law'

When you go to pull the tab on a packet that says 'pull here'. Tab comes off in your hand. Packet still firmly closed angry so out comes the sharp knife.

Urmstongran it could be that you once had a cup of tea at my house. We live in a very hard water area and no matter how many times per day I rinse out the kettle, there is always a little bit of grainy sediment in the bottom of the cup. I warn people now as I've seen many pull a face after draining the last mouthful brew I can't buy a water filter jug as DH drinks so much tea I couldn't store enough in the fridge and I don't want a water softener as I don't like the taste of the water and I drink gallons of that. I know. Contrary.

Why are new scissors sold in plastic that needs a pair of scissors to cut it open?

Hilmix Fri 22-Mar-19 11:47:54

Why does the Countdown clock show 60 seconds when they only ever use 30 ?

jaylucy Fri 22-Mar-19 11:42:09

Why do you put an even number of socks in the machine, put when you come to peg them out, it's odd (and you've checked the machine went emptying it!)

madmum38 Fri 22-Mar-19 11:41:00

Why when I buy scissors do they have plastic ties on them that I then have to use scissors to get them off

Why do my family put empty containers in the fridge or cupboards so I don’t know it has run out til I go to use it

Why am I the only one that can change a toilet roll, they even start a new one and leave it on top of the cistern

I buy Pearl Drops toothpaste, comes in a bottle shape container and if you leave it upside down you can get every bit out

for AllatSea48
You can get refill pouches for hand soap, I use Carex Moisture Plus £1:50 in Tesco, very moisturising, I have dry sore crispy skin on my hands. Other variants are available.
I have it in a Simplehuman hands free rechargeable soap dispenser (quite pricey but very good, also have one for dish soap) which you can adjust how much is dispensed so less waste.

I asked a man recently why he put his bananas in a poly bag when bananas grow with their own ‘bag’. His answer was that he liked to keep them clean!

jaylucy Fri 22-Mar-19 11:39:55

Why do public toilets have a gap under the cubicle walls/door? Is it for people to limbo out when they have finished?
Why do the hand dryers provided in said public toilets not have enough strength to actually dry your hands(,after washing your hands in cold water so making it pointless) so you have to resort to a tissue from your pocket ( if you have one!)

Blinko Fri 22-Mar-19 11:38:01

maxdecatt, it's the same people who stand about in doorways, I reckon.

maxdecatt Fri 22-Mar-19 11:29:07

Why do people block supermarket aisles while chatting to another moron just like them?

Janiepops Fri 22-Mar-19 11:27:55

I repop my duvet before washing, keeps everything out of it!!

inishowen Fri 22-Mar-19 11:27:13

Why are the biodegradable bags supplied for food waste too small? Our council tells us to tie the top of the bag but they are too small to tie.

Juliet27 Fri 22-Mar-19 11:25:14

David1968. You're lucky your socks eventually find their partners. My husband has had five odd socks for months.

Willow10 Fri 22-Mar-19 11:24:34

Why can't all shops supply recyclable paper bags instead of plastic? If Primark can do it, why not all the others?

ecci53 Fri 22-Mar-19 11:21:35

When I do a load of washing which includes a duvet cover, why does every other item end up inside the duvet cover? It's really annoying.

NotSpaghetti Fri 22-Mar-19 11:20:45

For years I have had tooth problems on holiday abroad or over Christmas. Why?

Blinko Fri 22-Mar-19 11:12:02

Why do people stand aimlessly in doorways? If you are tempted to stand while the world is buzzing around you, please don't stand in a doorway

Thanks!

Theoddbird Fri 22-Mar-19 11:11:12

Hahaha...don't get me started on this one. Peanut butter is one but my main gripe is with skin cream jars. This is not cheap and trying to get every last bit out is damn impossible....grrrrrrrrf

David1968 Fri 22-Mar-19 11:08:10

Why does one sock always hide (successfully) in the washing machine, at the end of a wash, only to be found after the next wash - or two?

Hm999 Fri 22-Mar-19 11:07:58

The dog is very grateful for silly peanut jars because she gets to spend hours licking it out

Urmstongran Thu 21-Mar-19 13:20:45

Why do I leave an inch of tea in my mug even though it wasn’t made with loose tea leaves?
