For a BT line you hear a message which says something like This person had chosen not to received calls from certain numbers.

I had two last week, automated voice and a shocking line but I just put the receiver down. It's a known nuisance number.

The calls don't get through to me any more as I've blocked them! I just wondered what the callers heard.

Thank you Grammaretto. It won’t worry my Mum. She’s no longer with us ?

Many of the calls are recorded messages, activated when someone answers the phone. I've stopped speaking now when I pick up the phone. A genuine caller will speak first... 'is anyone there?'....cold calls end abruptly. Most of my cold calls stopped when I started using an answering machine.

I was told you should hang up because you could be paying for the call.
Sorry to be a downer.
Before robots, I found myself talking to a woman in New Delhi about the weather and another in Wales who chatted about her family! I was given a telling by a young man working for Sky who answered me back when I told him not to do such an annoying job. He said he was a student and had to make some money to pay his way.

My mother used to say Just hold on while I get a pen. And then leave them hanging on until the penny dropped.

I have caller ID, and only answer numbers that I recognise.

If I understand it correctly it just continues to ring out at their end but you can't hear them.
It would be very satisfying if it could literally give them a message like 'You're blocked, you pest!' wouldn't it?
Apparently there's a tape on YouTube called Lenny which is really a robot. It sounds like an old man answering the phone - he chats for a while, then asks, 'who did you say you were, again?' until the pest gets fed up and hangs up. It tests their patience and wastes their time.

I am tempted to write what I hope could be said but it would be probably be deleted.
Along the lines of ' go away you very annoying person'.

I'm just sitting here wondering. I happily block incoming sales calls to my mobile and blacklist nuisance calls on the land line. But...what do these people hear if they call back? Does the line just not connect, does it ring out or does an electronic voice tell them their call is not wanted?
As I said, just wondering. Does anybody know?
