I'm redundant! ? (Lighthearted thread)

I feel your pain !! My adult daughters cook and bake more delicious things than me ..... Grandsons still rate me though Think it is my portion sizes that swings it for them !

It really is nice to know that the family have continued the legacy of fresh food and home-cooking even though they're no longer hovering around in the kitchen asking how long will dinner be.
I know how it feels to be wanting to bake something, my mother was the same with her Desperate Dan sized meals, Cornish pasties the size of dinosaurs and her bakewell PIE to die for. Everything out of the garden.

They'd still all fly back for my gravy, although I say it myself.

All the same, it's a heart-warming thought that home-fresh meals are the best and that tradition hasn't died out.

I can only bake two things successfully, biscuits and scones. Everything else is ??. You can send me anything that’s going begging ?

Oh Marydoll youve just made me realise we've done this to my lovely mum.She has always loved baking and still bakes most weeks aged 87 . She always offers us some to take home, but we're always on diets, or somebody doesn't like this that or the other. Consequently she has a freezer full. Think I'd better be a bit more gracious as it does keep her busy

I'm another redundant earth mother. It's great that they can do it all for themselves and tend to steer clear of processed and junk foodstuffs and I don't bake very often these days anyway.

Only one of mine is a good baker, better than me if truth be told. But I know that sense of “redundancy” with other things, the phone calls that begin with “mum, how do you.....?” get less frequent as the years go on. These days it’s just as likely to be us ringing one of them, “you know the Alexa/smart phone/iPad etc, well I can’t get it to....?”

But please don’t stop baking marydoll, it sounds like very Scottish baking to me, please send some to Yorkshire to help me reconnect with my cultural heritage. You haven’t got any empire biscuits, by any chance, that would be the icing literally on the cake!

Ah! I feel your pain, Marydoll; this year was the first time in as long as I can remember that I have not been asked to make GS’s birthday cake. I offered, but my daughter said she wanted to do it herself. Fair enough. Very nice it was too ?! We see him twice a week and I usually take him over a little something from my cake tin, but I was informed at the beginning of the month that he had given up sugar for February, so was not eating cake, or biscuits. This does not appear to have been carried over into March, so there is hope and there will be chocolate brownie on Monday! My son, who is a far better cook than me, has no such scruples. He takes home everything he is offered - and if it’s not offered he will schmooze his way to acquiring it! That’s m’boy!

Aw this thread is lovely it reminds me when my house was full and cake tins always needing refilling! My husband eats my cakes and scones so I'm still employed!

grannyqueenie, sorry! We did have empire buscuits a few days ago, but DD scoffed those!
It was my mother's recipie I used, the paper is now falling to bits.
I have transferred all my recipies onto my PC, so that when I kick the bucket, my legacy will live on!
My MIL refused to pass her recipies before she died. She had them all in her head.
I think she was afraid her beloved eldest son, my DH, would like my baking, better than hers.

I have never been asked to make a birthday cake for my GC or to sew or knit anything for them except the odd toy that they have requested themselves. My practical skills have been largely ignored although the GC and I have great cooking sessions in school holidays. however, where I have excelled is in reading to them, introducing them to different authors and generally giving all three a love of reading . They know I will buy them any book they ask for. I am more than content with that.

Marydoll my biscuit tins are like Mother Hubbard's; empty. I'm up to my eyes in packing boxes and have no time or room to bake. Please send all your baking to me where it will be demolished in minutes.

I have never been a brilliant cook and particularly not a good baker, but I do make a good roast. Every fortnight I travel down to my daughters and do a Sunday roast for the extended family. I find it quite hard work now but always have that 'good Mummy' feeling when I see them enjoying it.

One of our daughters in law is a spectacular baker so my baking is definitely not needed there. The other doesn’t eat cake so unless there are little ones who want to bake with me very little baking happens in my kitchen now. I also feel redundant. There’s something very basic about baking for a family and yes, I miss it. Mr C and I eat few baked goods ourselves, I have been known to walk round the neighbours with offerings when the temptation to bake gets too strong.

Ihave cut down a lot on home bakingand just do a couple of batches of fruit scones and a tray of biscuits for my DGSs lunchboxes during the week whilst they are at work,if I ever miss a week they are on the phone to ask what has happened to their treats.Its nice to feel wanted isn't it .

You'll have to teach me to cut down Glammanana. When I bake---it's for an army and dinners ? there's enough to choke a goat and there's only me !
I had 2 lamb chops, a heap of mashed potato and cauliflower with white sauce for my dinner, honestly ! There was enough for two meals.Do you think I've got worms ? Hahahaha.

I might even make some mince pies tomorrow.

Oh Marydoll, I think you should be very proud of what you have taught/passed on to your family. I’m beginning to feel like my mum when she realised I started to do things for my own for my family. Didn’t realise it of course at the time what she was thinking. That’s where us GN’S are now I think. We have come to a time in our life we should try and put ourselves first although I know for most that is a very difficult thing to do. Be proud and relish in your home making/baking skills and the teachings to your children. However, if there’s any home baking left I will gladly take some

Interesting this has come up, only yesterday I was thinking Friday used to be baking day for the weekend. Pleased to say all the AC bake I really don't need to/shouldn't anyway but OH and I do enjoy the occasional cake and scones.
