I’m becoming very fed up.

I was exhausted for ages after breaking my leg in two places. I think it's a combination of the shock of having an accident and the healing process, nature is making sure you get lots of rest. If you had a GA for surgery, too, I think that doesn't help.

I'm astonished an arm plaster weighs 8lb! I'm glad I opted for surgery as a toe to hip plaster would surely weigh as much as an elephant.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Katek. flowers

It is tiring getting over broken bones. Can I just put in my usual plea of suggesting you ask to be tested for osteoporosis, it seems people are rarely offered a Dexa scan after a first break.

You have my sympathy. When I broke my shoulder my arm was in a padded strap rather than a traditional sling. It could be adjusted so that the most comfortable position was found.
The should has many tendons attached to different muscles across the back. This made doing anything involving moving the back muscles painful and tiring. Including standing for any length of time.
So rest up as much as possible. The healing process is slow and it is worth doing all the physio as frequently as recommended. I was told that I might not be able to straighten my arm above my head, but I can and I put that down to the physio regime.

Healing does take it out of you. Also the event itself and the hospital visits, not to mention the pain, does nothing for your spirits, and that contributes to feeling exhausted. Take it easy. Three weeks is no time at all. Just look after you. Enjoy a bit of enforced R and R time.

Yes, I like the "this too shall pass" thing. Very true. flowers

Oh that sounds like an awful injury, no advice just sending kind and healing thoughts flowers

Oh dear katek- a horrible injury because of the pain involved, I imagine. I think you have to go with the flow and not fight tiredness and lack of energy. It's like we almost need to give ourselves permission to slow down and do very little. It can be frustrating I know, but this is the time of life when we can take the pressure off ourselves to be always achieving.

Enjoy a bit of sloth I say, even if it's injury-induced. smile

I hope as your shoulder heals you'll feel less tired and more like your old self.

Katek you have all my sympathy, I fractured a metatarsal and a undisplaced fracture in my ankle last summer. I had an aircast boot for 9 weeks during all those wonderful warm days!!!

I am normally very active, but during that time I was absolutely exhausted, I also put it down to my body telling me to rest/sleep so it could heal.

Take care and try to relax ?

Katek
How awful for you.
I think its exhausting doing nothing and even more so not being able to do anything.
Its a bit like going for a walk and just being outside for example, gives you more energy and wakes you up.
I think its not being able to do anything that's the worst.
Could you not try very small things like walking round the block or just sitting outside for a bit somewhere nice?
I really do feel for you and yes it is exhausting.
Sleep and rest is a great healer and I always try to remember 'this too shall pass'.
Good luck for Wednesday.

Could painkillers have a soporific effect? If you're taking any that is.
I too had massive energy drain when recovering from my knee replacements. Something about healing?

They usually change those heavy plaster casts for a lightweight one after a couple of days, when they've made sure any swelling has gone down.
The new casts come in very fetching shades of pink, purple, blue etc.

I had a sling for nearly 6 months when I broke my elbow - and a heavy plaster from hand to armpit. The worst thing of all was the pain it gave me in my neck, so you have all my sympathy. Sometimes they treat a broken shoulder by strapping arm to chest with no sling - might be worth asking them if this can be done instead. But someone has to remove the strapping each day so you can dress!

I think the body heals more quickly when resting or asleep.
When I had a break I was recommended calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D tablets to help heal the break.

Added to which, everything is so much effort when you're trying to do everything with an injured limb.

Sympathies katek I'm grateful it's not me!

Anniebach Mon 11-Mar-19 13:37:07

Oooops sorry x

Charleygirl5 Mon 11-Mar-19 13:32:41

My apologies- a slip of the finger.

KatyK Mon 11-Mar-19 13:30:13

It's not me. It's katek smile

I think that one's body puts all its effort into repair work and sleep is a cure all in my book. I've had a new knee and all I wanted to do was rest rather than exercise the knee. I'm in bed at 9.15 (at the latest) and struggle to get out of bed by 10 am. I have got up and made tea and emptied the dishwasher. I have a bath and go back to bed . Getting dressed is a tiring chore so Katek be kind to yourself.

Anniebach Mon 11-Mar-19 13:24:12

Not for me Charley I can’t lift a 2lb bag ?

Charleygirl5 Mon 11-Mar-19 13:18:40

KatyK this old age lark also makes us more tired. I could fall asleep standing on my feet.

Annie would it not be 4 bags, 2 lbs each bag of sugar?

Anniebach Mon 11-Mar-19 13:14:31

Give my neck a break ? best not to KatyK

Your tiredness may be caused by the extra effort you have to put into things you are able to do, plus carrying around the weight of 8 bags of sugar .

Good luck on Wednesday x

Now 3.5 weeks since I broke my shoulder and I’m so frustrated by my inability to do the simplest of things. There are improvements, but patience has never been one of my virtues I’m afraid. Neither can I understand why I’m so tired when I’m doing way less than normal. Dh and I went to visit dd2 and family yesterday - I was beginning to doze off on the way home and I’m like a washed out dishcloth today. Do bones need this much energy to heal?

Never mind, moan over: I have fracture clinic on Wed so may get sling off and give my neck a break (bad choice of word there!) from carrying around an extra 8lbs of arm. Fingers crossed.

C’est la vie.
