Do you think your mother would have appreciated GN

Just that really, I'm sure if my mum had been on line this may have been a site that appealed to her. What about yours? and if you think she would have subscribed to this site what threads would have drawn her in?

MissAdventure Mon 04-Mar-19 18:56:38

It would have been a waste of valuable time to my mum.
She could have ironed so many pairs of knickers, dish cloths and towels in the time spent online.

I'm not sure if my mother would have enjoyed it. She was deaf ,not completely, but enough for her to find meeting people difficult and she never enjoyed being with large groups of people for the same reason. So she might have enjoyed being able to interact in a different way but writing didn't come naturally to her either because she always worried about her spelling so I think she might not have contributed But I do think she would have enjoyed reading other people's comments. She would particularly have liked the threads on cooking I think.

Chewbacca Mon 04-Mar-19 18:43:08

No way! She'd have been convinced that she was being watched and her posts monitored by them! grin

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Mar-19 18:42:14

Terribull grin

My mother had lots of friends plus she had several sisters and brothers to confide in, bounce ideas off, if necessary.
My father, however, may have enjoyed the politics threads hmm

My mother would never have considered sharing her views with anyone outside her own set unless she thought they were, in her words, one of us.

In many ways, I am not my Mother’s daughter?

watermeadow Mon 04-Mar-19 18:23:35

Of course not. My mother’s thoughts, words and actions were the correct ones, everyone else was wrong. Always.

Anniebach Mon 04-Mar-19 18:19:56

My mother wouldn’t . Five children, 11 grandchildren, and friends she wouldn’t have been interested and for her what happens in the family stays in the family

WeepingWidow Mon 04-Mar-19 18:17:49

She would have put a lot of judgy posts up, particularly about me, women (especially unmarried ones <hoists bosom>) and children who speak in public

DanniRae Mon 04-Mar-19 18:02:41

My darling mum was very sociable but I think coming on here would have been a bit beyond her.
She was a simple soul - in the nicest possible way - and loved doing her knitting, reading magazines and watching Crossroads and Corrie. She loved a cuppa and a chat - I couldn't have had a more loving mum but it was my dad who had an enquiring mind and would have loved the internet - but Gransnet wouldn't have been up his street!

RosieLeah Mon 04-Mar-19 18:00:54

Yes, I'm sure my mother would have enjoyed it. She loved a bit of gossip, as most of us do, and would have given her twopen'orth on anyone in the news.

EllanVannin Mon 04-Mar-19 17:57:11

Oh no my mother wouldn't have enjoyed this. She'd have told everyone to take a running jump.
No, she wasn't one for any small-talk or anything like that.

In fact I only found out at her funeral that she was a member of some organisation as there was a huge wreath which said from the "Sisterhood", some Anglican thing ?

NanKate Mon 04-Mar-19 17:48:15

Yes Purpledaffodil our mothers would have been brought up to hide anything unsavoury from the general public and especially the neighbours.

TerriBull Mon 04-Mar-19 17:46:27

I don't think my mother would have revealed anything too personal about herself, she was, like others have said about their mothers a private person, although I think she may have enjoyed dipping her toe into some of the forums, but I couldn't get her to go online, a mobile phone was her limit.

"she would have considered it a frivolous waste of time" I got that response from an aunt, or words to that effect, when I was trying to pick her brains regarding family history. Whilst she was busy complaining how I was clearly wasting my time spending all day (her interpretation) on a computer on the futile task of genealogy, she nevertheless unconsciously interjected with all manner of snippets that I didn't know, so I just let her moan on grin then she said "you father would have known all this" to which I replied "that's I'm asking you, cos he's dead"hmm

I think my mum would have liked it if she'd had the time. She could have sounded off about any problems and could have asked for advice, all perfectly anonymously.

This topic really got me thinking. My mother was very social and sociable and had lots of friends, I can imagine her, if she got the hang of a smart phone busily texting her friends, but I do not think she would have ever have been on Facebook or anything like that (I am not on Facebook, or any social media where I am indentifiable) and I cannot see her on Gransnet. Apart from anything else, she had such a busy social life she wouldn't have time and although she was an intelligent and clever woman, she wasn't a curious woman and not interested in discussing things.

annodomini Mon 04-Mar-19 17:27:17

I don't think my mum would have understood the raison d'etre for Gransnet. She got all the interaction she wanted from her friends and the WI. If she had been on here, I'd have been quite embarrassed to express my opinions!

Jalima1108 Mon 04-Mar-19 16:57:18

No, I don't think my DM would.
She would probably consider it a frivolous waste of valuable time!

Purpledaffodil Mon 04-Mar-19 16:56:25

NanKate, my mother would have said exactly the same so I don’t wash it in public. Now in RL that’s another matter. ?

Squiffy Mon 04-Mar-19 16:53:50

My DM would have enjoyed sharing her opinions, as long as everyone agreed with them! I bought her a mug which said, "Everyone is entitled to my opinion!" on it!

kittylester Mon 04-Mar-19 16:47:42

Can beat that Teetime! My mother would hardly speak to me! Well, she actually didn't for 6 years!

My Mum would want to know that you were all wearing twinset and pearls before she would speak to you.

NanKate Mon 04-Mar-19 16:45:20

My dear mum would have said 'Don't wash your dirty washing in public'. However I think she would have peeked at some of the threads and said to me 'do you know what those women are up to' ? (Horrified, but fascinated facial expression).

Kidnapped Marydoll ! What would your mum have said about your tights around your knees in the High Street and your little sojourn into the men's loo. She might have had a touch of the vapours.

Oldandverygrey Mon 04-Mar-19 16:43:42

My mother would have been a definite no as well. The thought of revealing any personal details online would have filled her with horror!

KatyK Mon 04-Mar-19 16:42:31

Mine wouldn't.

Fennel Mon 04-Mar-19 16:36:40

My Mum would have loved it, she loved chatting to people of all ages.
In her last years she wouldn't have been able to use a computer and type, as she'd had a stroke. Though she had trained as a secretary.

Scribbles Mon 04-Mar-19 16:35:15

I don't think my mother would have enjoyed it. She was a sociable person in real life but quite shy; always took her time getting to know people and forming friendships. I suspect the upfront and straight-talking nature of much of GN would have put her off. And, as for the notion of meet-ups - going off for coffee or lunch with a person or people you've never actually been introduced to?! Never shock!!

My dad, on the other hand .... He would have loved the casual sociability of it all.
